Ah, I see. I know about the Vulcan sex thing but I'm not a big Star Trek fan so my brain didn't make the connection.

...People really use that in Mass Effect fics? Wow.

I think what also gets to me is when people write the pre-Omega 4 relay sex scene as some completely wild, crazy violent raunchy thing. And although I know everyone is different, I really just CAN'T see it. Further into the relationship? Sure. But at that time? No. I really don't think so.

Really? We're the complete opposite, I can't see it as a soft loving thing at all. But I suppose I'm biased, I'm not really into that soft romantic stuff, it makes me gag.

I always couldn't see it as crazy violent just because at that point they're not familiar with each other under the armor. More of a necessity thing than soft candlelight romance.

That's what you think.  His reproductive organs are in his forehead.

lolwut? I don't get the purring thing either, since turians do seem more likely to emit growling sounds, but if they did purr I fail to see how it would have anything to do with badassness.

'Cause you know. Lions purr. Well alright it isn't exactly a purr, but it sounds similar.

Actually they can't.

Big cats don't purr, they roar.  Little cats yeowl, wishing they could roar.  Alas, they only purr.

Lions and tigers do emit purr-like sounds, but those aren't true purrs. But still, you get the idea.

Either that or I've been lied to. :(

With the husky kind of voice Garrus has, I can't really hear purring.

Now, growling?? "Yeah...definitely!"

silentstephi: XD Yes!! Exactly! I love Anderson a little more now.

Purring....don't know about that. We'd have seen it by now, methinks. While he's lining up a shot or something. Though turians do look a -little- feline, they're not near furry enough for my brain to give them those kind of attributes. (Purring, rough tongue *koff*, etc.)

Aherm, yes, biting. :P You will also note that Shep in my fic was all "No big deal, guy" about it. Not that Garrus was all worked up over it, just kind of, "Aw, crap. My bad."

But seriously, after suffering throughreading the first ME novel, Anderson would have been WAAAAAAY more pissed at Saren than Udina at that point.
XD

I KNOW RIGHT.  I liked what replaying ME1 after reading that novel did for me though; Saren's trial was much more fun to watch while imagining the epic HAAAAAATE going on between those two there.

I'm a little sad that Anderson never got personal retribution, actually, but if it had to be him or Shepard to face Saren down there's really no contest.  Still.

Yes, but big cats do make a sort of...low rumbly clicking sound, which I
think is what MarginalBeast was referring to?

Turians....Pon Farr..... >_< Brain hurts.

I mean, yeah, it's more fun (and fairly believable) to imagine the two of them getting a little rough, but not until after they've, shall we say, practiced.

How are those novels, anyways? I'm thinking I'm going to get them but how soon depends on whether they'll be really worth being prioritized.

Yeah, this. And then he reaches down to stroke her arm. And he brought wine. Wine. It seems clear to me that he wanted their (possibly) last time together to be something special. Not "mushy", but tender for the most part (I'm not of the opinion that two strong, independant people in love can't have a romantic evening together). I'm sorry but having them throwing each other around the room--in that scene--seems wildly OOC to me.

But that's just me. The beauty of a fade to black is that you can imagine that scene however you want. See guys? There are perks to leaving out the steamy bits!

I have both of the first two (Revelation and Ascension, is it?) and like them both.  The first shows an awe-inspiring view of how truly evil someone can be (but not until the second half).  If you think Saren is a bad mofo in the game, you ain't seen *nothin'*.  Best. Villain. Ever!
And the second not only offers a fascinating slice of quarian culture (not gonna get specific, lest you want to read the book), and two of the most awesomest good-guy characters imaginable.  I personally would recommend picking up both, although, to be completely honest, I was kinda annoyed by the female lead in both books (but YMMV). :)

The first has writing that makes my head hurt.  It goes through a lot of words to tell you... very little.  And it totally destroyed Saren's character for me.  The second book was leaps and bounds better, but not by much.  I'll be buying the third because 1) I'm a complitionist and 2) they're quick reads, and have at least little tid bits of lore tucked away.

I guess the only thing I got REALLY frustrated with was that there are batarian and salarian women in these books... BUT NOT ONCE are they phyiscally described.  Just... /sets writers on fire.
It's probably because the author would get b!tched at by the art dept or something but honestly... SOME sort of indication on what makes them female WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE.

Oh, and anything that supports the ME 'verse.  When the comics come out, even though the writing for that is /facepalm'able, I'll still buy it, because I want more of ME.  Any lore I can get my grubby paws on, I shall.

I personally hard a bit of a hard time reading them...I don't know, maybe the style was a little dull?  I can't put my finger on it (I don't read for leisure very much anymore, because textbooks EAT MY BRAIN ALIVE but I was in desperate need of an ME fix right before the second game came out.)

Content was fun, though.   Loved Saren in the first book.  Second book was only meeehhhhh plotwise but I love Quarian culture (and it had Firefly references!) so all was well.  I very much want Lemm to be in ME3 oh please oh please oh please.

The novels are really good IMO. The first one talks about Saren and why he's the way he is. It also talks about Anderson. As for the second one it talks about the dirty things Cerberus does. That one just made me hate Cerberus more than ever.

Psh. He had a shiny shotgun. He does not neeeeeed personality. (Weird, now that you mention it, I guess he didn't. Huh.  Doesn't matter; I was in love the moment he decided to make an entrance by crashing through the window.)

Unfortunately a lot of authors think otherwise, I think it's wish fulfillment, so many women still want their man to be stronger than them, I've had friends tell me that they wouldn't want to date someone who wasn't stronger than them. It always weirded me out, probably because I've always wanted to be the stronger in a relationship, but in the end, I just want to get along with the person I end up with.

I'm with those authors on that point. I like alpha men and I can't think of a man as alpha if he's not taller, heavier, and stronger than I am.

But it's kind of obvious that Garrus isn't the alpha with Femshep, that's not to say he doesn't have any kind of control, she initiated the realationship but he set the pace. Honestly I don't really think that they can classified as alpha and whatnot, physical strength doesn't really factor into that anyway, and judging by his reach and flexibility story he likes strong dominant women, because he is a strong dominant male who likes a good fight. So whenever I read a fanfic with Femshep being all soft and submissive I have to stop because it's just so bleh, and in control suddenly confident in bed with a human Garrus is just so wrong, on so many levels. I'm not saying that Garrus should be soft and submissive, not at all. I just think that the physical parts of their relationship should be more balanced than what most authors have written.

Unfortunately the best mass effect fanfiction I've ever read is a Thane one, called "The Destroyer." There have been a couple of passable Garrus fics but nothing as good as that one. Seriously that author is amazing, she can write the "Strong Female breaks down only with The Man" and make it not cliche, I spent most of my time reading that fic wishing she were writing a GarrusxFemshep because she's just that good.

Anyway I view them as equals and when I think of them, doing the dirty. I always imagined that it would end with a broken fishtank.Image IPB

I'm not saying Garrus can't be alpha if Shep herself is dominant. I don't picture Shep as the submissive sort (unless she's in the mood), but I do picture her challenging Garrus and Garrus being able to physically overpower her. I just have a hard time imagining a being that large not being stronger than a human female, military training or not. I realize Shepard beat up the Turian creeper in Afterlife (sooo funny, loved that scene), but he was drunk. Plus, Garrus has had his own training in C-Sec, not to mention his time on Omega.

Looking at his neck, he looks lean, all tight and dense muscle. But perhaps I am projecting <3. Really, though, if you consider how animals smaller than you can wreck shop on you (some seals, otters, chimps, baboons, etc.), it would make sense for Turians to be stronger. But then I also wonder have they domesticated themselves to the degree that we have with ourselves and so inadvertently made themselves weaker? They've been out in space longer, so presumably they have been 'civilized' longer... but with a militarized society, perhaps they haven't. Eh.. too much to think on this late, back to laundry for me :P.

Re: Purring/growling: Firmly in the growl camp here. Can very easily imagine a deep growl coming from a Turian. The purring.. I can see that as well, I just prefer the growl :D. Matches the love nips and scratches.

I don't understand the fascination with trying to figure out who is the dominant/submissive one in the relationship, even as a means to get an idea of how to write the relationship or physical prowess. I don't analyze the relationships of people I know in real life in such a manner. I don't even watch two people fighting and declare the loser a submissive.

The problem is that you can't base Turians strength on their size because palavens gravity is lower than earths, a creature their size and shape on earth would be heavier and stronger than them. Unfortunately we don't know how different the gravity is so we can't measure out their strength.
