It's weird ... but I have such a hard time fic'ing Garrus.

It's a deep seated fear of screwing up the character. My current WIP is all OCs. -.-

But now that I've run out of steam for vids (at least for now) and my screenshotting has calmed a bit, I realize the only other creative avenues left are arting or ficing.

'Dis... could be trouble -.-

I think I need to get over my irrational fear of fic'ing. I was scarred too much way back in HS with bad Sailor Moon/Dragon Ball/FlavorOfTheMonthAnime by people. Bad fanfics. With rampant Mary Sue's. That they forced me to read and edit because I was the English Major. Every time I think of doing a fanfic the dread of creating another Mary Sue Monster fills me and I shy away.

/looks at Garrus, looks at keyboard... Looks at Garrus, looks at keyboard...

Meep? :crying:

EDIT: You know, I paid for the outfits, even with my very bare budget, and I just can't get to liking the outfits now that I have them. I LIKE Garrus' scarred up armor. It... I don't know... it's PART of him. It says "I walked away from this, what do you think YOU can do to me?" Or maybe I'm just a bit warped and like the scars, on him and his armor. Either or.

I love his scarred armor.  And I love his fixed new armor.  I totally dig his scars.  But I like the reality that if he's wearing something that's not what he got blown to hell in, well, it wouldn't be blown to hell. XD

As for dreading to write... yea, I dread it because I don't want to be one of those bad fic'rs.  I've read some.  And I've read some that are ok, until the character starts acting OOC... and then I twitch...

I think the key thing to keep in mind is that your OC's are always going to have some measure of Mary Sue-ness (or anti-Sue, which can be equally obnoxious). The thing is, you can't be afraid of it. Be aware of it, but also be aware that even well-known "official" characters can be markedly Mary-Sue and still be acceptable to people.

Mary Sue Litmus Test: I like to use this test for determining my character's levels of Sue-ness. I was told Morpheus from The Matrix ranked in the 70's...more than double my own OC. Some level of "Mary Sue" is necessary to make a character more interesting...it's only a matter of finding the right balance.

You know what?  I coughed up money for the outfits, too, and put Garrus's new one on him for a mission...and then switched him back to the old, banged-up armor.  It just seems more...familiar.  He is an old friend, after all.  Maybe sometime I will switch him back, but for now, I'm going to play the Sidonis mission in a few minutes with his old armor.  (I must say, though, I think Jack's new outfit is a trade-up.)

eta: Is it totally wrong of me to keep reading the same piece of Garrus romance fic over and over again, like, 10 times?
Because the more I read it, the more I love it!

Avoiding Mary-Sue-ness with Shepard is ridiculously difficult.  She's kinda MADE that way.

I meant it more for OC's, but yeah...Shepard really is a definitive Mary Sue by design. ^^ I guess it works since it's a single-player game and Shepard feels more like "everyone's" character in a sense, so perhaps it's more tolerable in fanfiction...okay, well-written fanfiction..with grammar, spelling, and all those good things.

I would have been very happy had BW kept the design/style of Garrus' loyalty armor, but just fixed up the giant holes and burn marks. ^^ I LOVE his loyalty armor...but that said, I keep him in the fixed armor...it's not as nice as the loyalty set, but at least it's fixed.

Hm, at first I didn't like the red scouter, but the armor does look so pretty, after all.

Haha, very true. I suppose it's just that ingrained fear. Like... I'm terrified of anything that buzz's because I was swarmed by wasps when I was in preschool. Phobia, I can't NOT react.

I guess I'll just have to suck it up and actually try to write down what I think about and.... talk to my cats as if they were the character in question to see if the line makes sense.... oh lord, that's just creepy sounding. Maybe I should write it down to get it out of my system. /sighs :\\

Ooooh bookmarked for awesome.

And yea, I get that even great characters out there (Harry Dresden, Anita Blake pre Danse Macabe come to mind) are Sues to one extreme or another.

Plus when people say "write what you know" it's hard... to not.  I guess.  I'm more worried about 'groan factor.'  Or when you think something can't be that obvious and then you finally write it out... and realize it's the worst thing ever because people will see the plot coming a mile away...

Beta's are a god send.  Really.  Word gets most of the grammar/spelling out of the way,  but I love beta'ing and being beta'd.

Wait... that sounded wrong. -.-

YES! THIS! I CAN'T WIN. I started a little piece, I'm not going to lie...but after the first initial chapter, I can't write anything satisfying. I've re-witten the next scenes over and over and either Shep comes off as TOO bad ass or Garrus is too OOC. He is very difficult to write...

One thing I think more writers should do though when writing Garrus is to read the lines mentally with Brandon Keener's voice. It makes things easier to see when it doesn't fit right. Same goes for Shep, too. I've read way too many a fic where Shep comes off as much too cute and demure. It's like, she's a 30-year-old marine not a 16-year-old HS student.

Also, wrecked armor FTW! I can't stand that orange scouter.

I love to write, but I don't think I'm brave enough. I'm too thin-skinned for the criticism.

And I would want to do Garrus justice.

Please, anyone looking to get into writing fanfiction...take Sialater's advice...get a beta! No matter how wonderfully skilled you think you are at writing, get one anyway.  An actual beta.  One who will read and actually edit your story and provide constructive feedback.  A good beta can make the difference between a fave'd gem and a sad mess of a fic that's left to die painfully in the corner.  Alone.

The voice thing helps a lot.  Yea.  There are extremes to the Shepard thing though.  Honestly, it's probably also a reflection of the writer when Shep comes off too young.  It's difficult for younger writers to write in an adults head (not impossible, but tough.)
I find myself realizing the age the writer is writing in when I ask myself, "Wait... that's important why? O.o"  Not always... but it's a good radar.

Every writer projects a part of them into their characters. An important thing in regards to creating characters you can sympathize is making them imperfect and dealing with their struggles imperfectly. They need motivation and they need road blocks along the way. I don't mean a character who is emo because she's so beautiful and gets all the attention from the girls and boys and everyone loves her. LOL

I have about 4.  Plus random draftees, erm.... volunteers.  And if you're writing about a specific character, it's best to visit that thread and get one of that character's fans.

In case you guys want to input anything. ;)

P.S.  Thanks Silentstephi :wub::wub:

I think Garrus is cooler. I have not made any femsheps and I don't plan on doing so until I finish ME3 with my canon Shepard, but if I did I don't think I'd want to romance Thane. He's going to die within a year or two, that would be painful for femshep.

I love this turian. So cute. He's on Noveria in ME.
