@Mrs Vakarian
I've seen Shepards who can handle katanas, are the greatest cooks and make the best turian food EVAH. Everyone suddenly likes her for no reason, even Papa Vakarian is in awe and compliments his son for finding such a fine wife and good looking too.
I think Chuck Norris just found his match. Having Shepard and Chuck Norris fight would strike fear even in the reapers who will retreat to Dark Space.

What is it with the katana obsession? It makes no sense in any fandom outside of anime, and yet suethors still obsessively insert them. I just don't get it.
(They're not even that good a sword! They're made for cutting through cloth, not body armour!)

Katanas=leetzorz?

I have no idea, even I kinda have to scratch my head when ever I see katanas in stories... (Like I love this Vampire series, the Chicagoland Vampire Series... but really... katanas? Wtf?)

I think Chuck Norris just got owned. Making the impossible possible, all thanks to Shepard. However I sense the defeat of Chuck Norris has caused rift in the space-time-continuum. Prepare for the apocalypse... Or actually, just wait for Shepard to fix it with some big explosion.

It would look cool, but it would be highly impractical. Eastern swords were made for use mostly against enemies wearing little or no armour, so a katana would be ineffective against the armour in the ME universe.

I can, however picture him having a dagger or two, or maybe a shortsword, for close-quarters combat, and plunging it in the vulnerable spots between  the 'plates' of the armour.

(Yeah, I'm a bit of a sword nerd ^^;;)

They must try harder to make any sense in their fic, but first, they need more common sense.

At times, I feel so sorry for Garrus and how out of character he is. He's treated more like an object in several fic, or overly emotional, like a teen rebeling against his parents:

You will never understand! *slams the door and go cries in a corner*

This is so silly, yet i can't stop reading them.

If it's not copy-righted, they should add a hidden blade, or at least a combat knife. So when someone is really freaking annoying, you just stab them in the face and walk away. I'm pretty sure a "stab in the face button" should be mandatory for all games.

I have a love-hate relationship with those trainwreck fics. They can be so bad and so predictable that it's funny! Even funnier when you make a running commentary - especially if it uses the characters being mangled...and thus the act of sporking fanfiction is born :POf course, a fic usually needs to be truly horrible before it's sporkable.

The blade will go perfect with a renegade FemShepard, especially since her voice sounds like a psycho.
For MaleShepard a shot in the head is fine, he's kind of a smug guy when renegading.

Like the instant-kill "murder knife" (that only existed in cutscenes) from DAO? That could open up some interesting scenarios. I doubt Bioware would implement it, though  - the ME series is too gun-focused. Come to think of it, have we ever seen a knife im-game other than the one strapped to Tali's leg? (I suppose turian talons could count, but we never see them without gloves)

It's the calibrations, man.

Due to his constant vigilance in keeping things calibrated, Garrus can do things that others deem miraculous or impossible.

Hm...Gotta draw a comic where all the crew members are requesting that Garrus calibrate something without using the word "calibrate" correctly.

Shepard: Garrus, I think my bra needs calibrating. It just feels so tight...

Frustrated because I almost beat the final battle on Korlus on Hardcore and everything crashed. So here I am. Maybe it is because Garrus' calibrations are off, for he was fighting above me.

I love Garrus. Good night here, all.

Whiner, I'm 1 hour ahead of you :P. Goodnight.

Yes, quoting from 3 pages ago, but in my defence, I had to get up at
6am to get a train! lol (which I am currently on). Ans Flammie, youngster's like yourseld do need more sleep, but you should also have better stamina! I'm old. I need my naps. :P

Wow - 5 pages. Lots of catching up to do . I minored in creative writing, and I've had a few shorts pulished, but fanfic has always terrified me for the same reasons as a lot of you. When the character belongs to someone else, there is so much more pressure to get the voice perfect, because it sticks out when you don't. So I've never fic'd. I've had a few ideas, but never actually got around to writing them 'cos the the fear. Until now, cos Garrus is inspiring! lol. Seriously, though, I've just started (am typing on the train, actually) and you know what? Fanfic is really hard! :? lol. I like Mary Suing characters. As pointed out, Shep is quite resistant to it. I know a lot of you don't like people to be too specific abotu Shepard in fic, but I've decided to give her a name and write a version of the Shep I play, since I figure whatever way I write her she is going to be OOC for at least a few other people's Shepards. At least I know my Shep's motivations are. It's very strange to be writing prose again, since I switched into scripting about a year ago, and never really deviate now. This will probably suck, but if I fail, at least I've overcome my fear barrier!! lol

Speaking of writing and Garrus, has anyone read Robin Hobb's the LiveShip Traders Trilogy? There was a relationship in that which totally makes me think Garrus/Shep, and I wondered if I was crazy? (FYI - AWESOME read. She is one of my fave writers!)

Sidenote: It's April, and we are driving past snow. WTF?

And ugly baby pic, guys? Warn me next time! a, I can't unsee that, and b, the lady sat next to me saw my screen and now looks distinctly uncomfortable. She is avoiding eyecontact!

Norris already got owned. By Mr Rogers. (and several other badasses, including Spock, The Rock, Doc Ock and Hulk Hogan!)  Shepard could easily take them all.

I don't see why they can't have blades in space. To be honest, I'm always slightly concerned when they start firing their guns in spaceships that do not look like they could withstand the rupture a stray bullet could create. I read a lot of people who say Turiens don't need blades because of their claws, but then I think "Who wants to get their claws all covered in guts, when knives are so sharp and portable?" Also, carrying a combat knife just makes sense. You can't always shoot through things you might snag on, can you? Garrus with a cool FF style blade would look awesome! (you know, those ones that are sort of part Bat'leth, part schimtar, all badass!)

.....and I think I'm caught up.

Morning, Garrusites. :D

Oh my.  I am learning things about modding and there is some interesting bit of information on Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 save editor.

I don't know how the person who built the save editor program gleaned this bit of info from the edits.  I look at the save files in notepad++ and it is thousands of lines of "NULL" with occasional filenames interspersed.  Whether it's speculation on the part of the person who built the program or if that's something written somewhere in the code, I can't say.

Possible spoiler alert:

Seriously, I don't know if you want to read this:

ARE YOU SURE?!?!:

There is a point system to indicate "Garrus pushed toward C-sec progress (paragon)" and "Garrus pushed toward Spectres progress (renegade)"

To be fair, a lot of people who write bad fanfic are just learning to write. I know my first fanfic was a stinker with a Mary Sue in it. That was back in the dark ages, when I used the internet in the library and didn't have a phone in my apartment (no cell phone, no landline). I've heard it said that writers have to write, on average, a million words of garbage before they become skilled, and I would never want to rag on someone who's taken the courage to post their very first fic, even if they still have a long road to travel. Mocking them at that point might mean they never travel that road at all.

I also feel that younger writers, because they haven't had a lot of life experience, tend to write their characters at their own level--hence adult characters acting more like teenagers. (Some adults, conversely, can remember how to write convincing children/teenagers--and some can't, and are "Stuck" in an adult voice.)

Many of them, of any age, are just learning how to write someone "in character", and a certain degree of slippage and trial and error are to be expected. I've yet to find a Garrus fic where Garrus was completely unrecognizable, though I've found a few where the writer's interpretation of the character differed from how I prefer to see him, I could at least justify their interpretations using things from canon.

Yes, I've rolled my eyes at bad fanfic, and there are some issues in fic that I feel get "conveniently overlooked" (ie, writers who don't bother to explain how Garrus and Shep had a kid together, people who forget what "don't ingest" means in all its permutations) that rub me the wrong way. I can actually forgive a few gratuitous katanas more easily than people who hand-wave away the very challenges that make the situation interesting. Overall, though, fanfic isn't professional writing and one of the great things about it is that it provides a venue for sharing, growing and improving in a way that amateur original fiction often does not.

I was worried about that too - then a friend pointed out that if you shot the walls the marks just faded away. I guess they invented self-repairing walls at some point :P

Swords (or at least anything bigger than a shortsword) could cause some pretty big problems. While we see few narrow corridors in-game, they would be common enough that the military and C-sec would need to be trained to fight in them. It wouldn't leave a lot of room for manouvering, especially if there are multiple enemies - there wouldn't be much room to swing a sword, making guns a lot more practical in that situation. Swordfighting would also leave you exposed to enemy gunfire. Plus, armour in the ME universe is pretty tough. You might be able to dent, crush or crack it, but it would be resistant to most kinds of swordplay. If they invented some kind of energy-sword or mass-accelerated sword, it would get around the armour problem - but make them more dangerous to use in ships, plus there's still the other problems.

I agree with combat knives though. You never know when you'll need a sharp object! Also, as I said in an earlier post, in close-quarters combat you could use it to puncture between the 'plates' of the armour, and cause a lot of damage. (And I agree that turians wouldn't want to get their claws all messy, plus it would look uncivilized)

(Argh, I lost this post halfway through writing it. :crying: The old one was worded better :pinched:)

@Ray Joel Oh - Oooh, that's pretty exciting, and also a bit worrying.

Spoiler text-> I paragon'd him in both games, but I don't wan't him re-joining C-sec - we saw how that turns out. Plus it means we might not get to travel the galaxy together after the credits - if he re-joins C-sec he'll be tied to the Citadel. I'd rather he became a Spectre, but I don't want to compromise on morality.

Oh man I hope not.  Ha, that would be... interesting.  And would make any of his fates kind of sad, if he's your LI.  Oh man if they pull another can't win Dragon Age type scenario, I will... I'll...

I will frown as hard as I can.

After much experimentation I learned that every time you hit "enter" it screws up the color code, so select each paragraph individually to spoiler separate text.
