I'd say it's more like crushed. Disappointed isn't a strong enough word for his reaction IMO.

I wish all of the characters had a few lines that recycle when they can't talk to you, like Mordin. His were funny, too.

Yeah, everything before the last scene was vague. For instance, a person could regard Kasumi's comment as an unfortunate dent in their friendship. In real-life, sexual encounters do affect the platonic bond between friends if it goes badly.

Yeah but, er, Garrus and Shepard never have sex before the "break-up" (breaking up with him after the suicide mission doesn't really count since his dialogue is stuck in the pre-consummation phase). I highly doubt their friendship could be dented by something that never even took place. It would be weird even for Kasumi to comment about something like that. It's not a big deal at all.

Speak form experience, once the question of sex is out there, it's hard to pull it back in. If you talk about it and decide against it, feelings get hurt. There becomes an issue of 'what's wrong with me? I thoiught we were friends". Even if one of you knows that it would be bad for the friendship, chances are the other person is trying to find other excuses, especially if it is something you have talked about honestly with a view towards doing before now... Sometimes you almost have to have the sex, then realise you were better off, in order for things to go back as they were. Nothing awkwards up a friendship like an unbalanced sexual attraction.

Basically, once Shepard had made the proposition, and Garrus accepted, they had already crossed a line.

I'm speaking from experience too in saying that it's possible to have a "friends with benefits" situation with somebody for a while, actually quite a while.  But that ended badly because we never got any romantic attachments for each other.

Oh, I get that. It just depends on the people, I guess. I've always seen the thing with Garrus as being a 'once it's out there, we can't take it back' scenario. At least if they try it, and it doesn't work out, they know for sure. If they go to the edge and don't follow through, there's this question mark over the relationship that I don't think Garrus knows how to deal with. (He doesn't know what to do with grey ;)) Not saying my experience was a definitive experience, but I was responding to a comment that there was nothing to get past if they hadn't actually had sex, when I've found that sometimes just the verbalising of that type of relationship is enough to damage a friendship if handled wrongly.

You don't need to worry about that in the context of this thread. None of you denied Garrus canonically, it's good. It is unsettling sometimes to consider what happens in the scenario of rejecting your LI though, but at least that is not what will carry over to ME3 when you import :)

Yeah, I guess that's the important thing to remember here.  Heh, it's fun to overthink things sometimes, but it can get depressing. ;)

If you rejected Jack while playing as a MaleShep...

She. Will. Hate. Your. Guts.

But yeah, I think all relationships will be long-term. That, or they'll come up with some horrible, horrible plot twist to make us kill our LI because they're indoctrinated or something. That'd suck major quad. And it'd be cliche.

Is it like if you refused to give Tali the Geth data in ME1?

You don't get an import. You start the game where Shep awakens to the sound of his limbs being biotically ripped off. Critcal Mission Failure.

No, much worse. Jack thinks you were leading her on and toying with her. It's especially annoying since apparently being nice to her makes Jack think you want her. Tali is disappointed if you don't give her the geth data but you can tell with Jack it's much worse.

And if you romanced Thane, you'll discover that the suicide mission you played was a wild hallucination you got from kissing him.

Eek, I don't think I want to see that.  Still, I don't know what's worse...blind fury or crushing disappointment a la Garrus or Tali.

I think crushing disappointment is worse. It's either to sympathize with that, which makes one feel like a jerk :( Fortunately we did not reject them in the canon playthroughs :)
