WRT: Renegade/Paragon choices--my friend always complains to me that, the way Paragon and Renegade are defined (Paragon is by-the-book military officer, Renegade is rulebreaker who gets the job done at any cost), some choices *should* be swapped; everything in career soldier Shepard's training would tell her to kill the rachni queen right off, for example. Much like Jade Empire, alignment ultimately got kind of dumbed down to flat-out good/evil, which is...annoying. It should be more like Lawful/Chaotic, and even then, I would consider it a Lawful decision to kill the rachni queen, since even in the second game you have no way of verifying anything she tells you.
My definition of Paragon has always been making the choices that are most just, basically ultimately good in all their decision making. I was never under the impression that it was strictly related to by-the-book military officer. A civilian can still be Paragon if their choices or made on a foundation of doing what's right and making sound moral choices - not limited to or exempt from any one thing or species, which is why saving the Rachni Queen is the Paragon route, because you are giving her a chance to survive peacefully where before the Rachni were only thought of as monsters/villains. A choice like that could backfire obviously, but with anyone trying to do good...you are often putting yourself at the risk of betrayal in order to give others a fair chance because you can't judge who does and doesn't deserve it - at least not until proven otherwise, but that often times doesn't come until after the fact.
A lot of times it does get dumbed down to good/evil though and I agree that some choices should really be reversed. Sometimes what is considered a Renegade choice really doesn't have to be, but it would depend on the person - some would make a Renegade choice, by BioWare's standards in their games, without any actual Renegade intentions in a real life situation.Trying to cover the wide scope of opinions and/or possible choices any individual might make in all the many circumstances of the ME Universe would be impossible, so BioWare has to dumb it down to something I suppose.
EDIT* Damn sentences that don't read right.
