Maybe I'm just waiting to get my rose-colored Pollyanna glasses slapped off my face, but if you look at the foreshadowing and the story structure, it just makes sense to me that the ME1 LIs were set aside. Sure they could have probably done it a lot more gracefully--given you more communication with them or something. Hopefully they've taken notes from the disappointment it's brought up. But I think that if they wanted the romance B plots to be able to have a strong beginning and conclusion, keeping the ME1 LIs from dying is a more efficient use of resources. If they have some dramatic finales planned, it would be nice if most people could actually be able to play through them rather than having the relationships you've already settled into fizzle out with some filler in the middle of the story and then having them die. As it is, the ME1s have a dramatic falling in love sequence, and they will have a dramatic conclusion.
But then a lot of this premise does call into doubt the fate of the ME2 LIs. SIGH.
I've always been a propenent of letting the player make choices and then living with the consequences. I felt it would have been better to include them and then if they died, they died, and if they lived then "yay!"

BW disagreed and wrote it the way they did, for reasons we can only as-yet speculate. I do hope they return in full force, and hopefully not at the expense of any other characters. I do agree with you that at least they'll 100% survive for ME3, no matter what, so there's a silver lining...I just wish BW hadn't written it the way they had. I can think of a few ways they could have been written out without it having occured as it did on Horizon.
But yeah...if there is anything that has/had me worried regarding ME2 LI's (or just characters in general), it's the premise set by ME2. Not a lot of confidence instilled by that move...but I'm very hopeful that the devs will NOT sideline people for ME3. That would definitely NOT be cool. I choose to be optimistic about it, but in the back of my head there's that voice reminding me what Casey said in an interview about how they were considering a whole new squad for ME3.

Horizon was torture for me during my
first playthrough of ME2. I had gotten to Horizon and gotten yelled at
by Kaidan and then got in a car to go out of town for two days. The BF
had to listen to me complain all the way to Atlanta. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/joyful.png
But Garrus was a good friend and tried to yell at Alenko
for me during that scene. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png
I can imagine! I didn't romance them, but I was definitely ranting after it. I was all: "Why, Bioware, WHY!"
