I think we've explained the whole standalone thing, Brian. It just means new players will be able to understand the story and get a satisfactory ending, I'd wager.

Oh? sorry, din't notice the explaination, coz i hit the quote button the moment when i saw the post.Man...seriously! who the heck will buy and play the last part of an epic RPG trilogy, without playing the first two?

You'd be surprised.  Again I remind you: Halo.  I know a lot of people who played Halo 3 without playing the first two.  If a game gets enough hype, there will be plenty of people who'll jump right in.

I agree that it was a big risk (don't anybody dare), and I'm glad it's worked out so well (imho).  I'm very wary of fanservice in principle.  If they hadn't had him as an LI, I'm sure the fan community would have been fine going right on ahead and continuing to swoon over him regardless.  It is pretty amazing to me though that they actually went through with it.  This is definitely among the strangest infatuations I've had, and God bless them for indulging me.

As to the difficult mechanics of the relationship, I think it's part of the charm.  There's been plenty of scifi about people working out such extreme differences.  And incidentally, I am friends with a family with one daughter who is a vegetarian and another daughter who is allergic to soy.  Non-compatible diets don't have to tear people apart!

LOL ^_^ You made my day, Ray.

Your first paragraph sums up my Garrus-thoughts exactly. The latter paragraph is an excellent point- that so far 99% of what we love about Garrus is that everything is so darn unconventional. I've read Shenko fanfics and have to yawn a bit 'cause it's like almost any other fic I've read. Garrus fics? Complex, thought-provoking and delicious. Dif'rent strokes and all of that, but I like breaking from cliches, myself.
(Disclaimer: I still like Kaidan. No offense intended toward Kaidanites.)

Basically, those same new players that silt mentioned won't have to have the worst ending where the Reapers kill everyone and laugh at your misfortune. That kind of gives me hope because that seems to steer away from black and white choices, since ME3 new Shepards will likely have killed everything off (aside from some/all suicide mission people I suppose) or rejected things in order to clear away references that new players wouldn't understand.

Halo huh? i understand many people bought it because of its online features, but its a FPS game and i don't think story in FPS game is as important as in a RPG especially a RPG trilogy. Eh, what the hell...just hope BW don't screw ME3 up just because they want to attract more new players to the goddamn LAST PART of the freaking trilogy as part of their  "business tactics".

If people start singing the praises of ME3, newcomers will buy it regardless of whether they've played the first two games. So hopefully making a good game that satisfies everyone is what will come first.

*ME3 starts, the Normandy gets attacked by Reapers.*

New Shepard: GOD! The ship's being attacked! Where's my crew? Where are all the hot alien chicks/dudes to help me fight these things!? The cover promised "alien allies that could become friends, and perhaps even lovers"!

EDI: Shepard, don't you remember? Your entire crew was killed at the Collector station.

New Shepard: I DIDN'T PLAY MASS EFFECT 2!

*New Shepard looks out the window.*

New Shepard: How do we fight this thing!? It's huge!

EDI: If you had Garrus' Thanix cannon installed, we could--

New Shepard: I didn't play Mass Effect 2!

EDI: Perhaps Mordin's upgrades could --

New Shepard: Who the hell is Mordin? And who the hell are you!?

EDI: My name is EDI. I am the ship's artificial intelligence. You are Commander Shepard. Hero of the Citadel. Slayer of the Collectors.

New Shepard: What's the Citadel? Who are the Collectors? AND WHO IS MORDIN!?

EDI:  Professor Mordin Solus is -- was -- a fantastic and brave salarian scientist.

New Shepard: He sounds awesome! How did he die?

EDI: You let him infiltrate the Collector base's vents. He succumbed to the wounds sustained from being hit by a rocket.

New Shepard: Well, that sucks.

EDI: Your entire squad passed away. One by one. I am sorry, Shepard, but you have to fight this battle alone.

New Shepard: So...I guess that means no hot alien lovin'?

EDI: I am afraid not. In fact, the chance that you will not survive the encounter with this Reaper is--

*The Normandy gets blown up, Shepard floats through the endless void of space.*

New Shepard: I still don't know who the Collectors are.

I don't see what the big deal is about letting new players get confused a little bit at some parts of the story. That's what happens when you buy part 3 of a trilogy without ever doing the first 2 parts. It should be a "well duh you aren't going to know what's going on".

It's just sound business and good entertainment.  It's not entirely a bad thing, it just means that you won't feel like you've walked into the middle of the conversation.  You can still catch up on what's going on, who these people are, what you're supposed to do without having to go through the tutorials and exposition you would only have gotten if you had played the two previous games.

Damn, imagine Bioware actually pulled that out and tricked all the newcomers into having to buy 1 and 2. Market tactics, I tell you.

Maybe Bioware will include dialogue and explanations for new players as dialogue choices on the left or something. Means that you don't have to suffer if you didn't play ME1 or 2, but if you did play them, you don't have to endure those comments. Unless you want to hear Garrus's voice when he tells you about what you taught and made him do in the past games.

To be honest, though, I do agree that, especially for an RPG trilogy, that newcomers shouldn't complain that they don't understand it, and neither do I exactly agree with making ME3 self-sufficient for newcomers, though I understand the thought behind it.

Well look at how they did the exposition for ME2. Jacob says things like "I work for Cerberus" and you can say "What's that?" and get an explanation or "Oh hell no!" and move forward in the conversation. Standalone, but part of a larger story.

I think it'll be similar to ME2's "Shepard did everything right." conversation for the big choices, and that the smaller choices will be referenced in conversations. I also think that you'll have a conversation/a moment with your chosen LI before the first mission (like the start of ME2 where you see Kaidan/Ashley/Liara running through the Normandy as it crashes).

And it's the EXACT SAME Illusive Man you screwed over!

...Someone should skit that.

I just imagined seeing Garrus run up to Shepard after the Normandy gets attacked (yet again). My mind was "Oh hell no, not another attack on the Normandy ¬.¬" and my heart was like "D'aww, it's Garrus who's running up to you and talking to you ^.^"

Yeah, those kind of things helped a lot when I played ME2 (one of the few who played that one first before actually getting ME1... to be honest, I understood everything a lot better after playing ME1). I guess it'll be the same in ME3.

As long as he's not wearing Phoenix armor.

But see, there you go--you were able to jump into the universe, but things still make a lot more sense if you look at them in context.

Well, it's not much, but Liara runs up to you instead if you romanced her. Otherwise it's the Virmire survivor. Nothing else really happens.

THE ILLUSIVE MAN: Shepard. *puffs smoke* You might not know it, but I brought you back to life.

SHEPARD: AGAIN!? Wow, unoriginal writers. So why'd you do it?

THE ILLUSIVE MAN: Just so I could kill you myself. You blew up that Collector base, Shepard. You deserve to--

*GARRUS enters.*

GARRUS: HOLD IT!

SHEPARD: Okay, let me guess how the plot develops from here: The Illusive Man tries to kill me and Garrus. We escape with our lives. We make out. Then we go on to unite the races to stop the Reapers, and this particular moment will never be mentioned again.

*silence*

THE ILLUSIVE MAN: Yeah, pretty much.

SHEPARD: So we start running now?

THE ILLUSIVE MAN: I'll give you a five second advantage.

*SHEPARD grabs GARRUS and gets the hell out of dodge, stealing a shuttle in the process.*

*Five minutes later, they're still sitting in the shuttle.*

SHEPARD: So, do you wanna make out to establish our relationship?

GARRUS: Do I ever.

Hah, you never fail to deliver, Xsause. You really are amazing.

Hmm... Imagine the Bioware writers listen to you, Ray Joel Oh, but they put Garrus in even more horrendously coloured armour instead? It's basically fufilling your basic wish.

:o  should have guessed that...oh well, if Normandy got attacked....again, this time, i will grab Garrus and head straight to the escape pod. Getting spaced once is more than enough in a lifetime.
