Wrapped up ME2 earlier this week, proceeded to lurk for a bit when suffering from Garrus withdrawal, then finally registered [how could I not, when the Garrus fanbase here seems so affable?]
That being said, hello, my name is Evander, and I'm deeply in like with Mr. Vakarian.

Plus there's the whole food thing. The idea of not being able to mooch off my guys french fries because it might kill me is very depressing.
On the other hand, you wouldn't have to worry about doing something that you'd regret in the pursuit of survival in a Donner Party-esque scenario.
Don't ask me why I think about these things, I worry about myself too.
To comment on the "stand-alone" ME3 issue... I'll take a page out of Trent Reznor's book and adapt what he did with Ghosts to ME3. But not really.
For those just jumping in, you'd get your baseline experience: standard storyline assuming that the cruddiest choices were made in the previous two games (If you're rocking an Xbox), with Miranda and Jacob (I feel like that'd be a reasonable combo, considering you didn't have to go out of your way to recruit them.) and everyone else assumed dead or not recruited. At this point, you might pick up Liara and whoever didn't get Virmired (based on your Shep's gender, I suppose) up and a few other folks that both veterans and newcomers can fall in love with and create a generally satisfying game.
For the veterans coming in, you'd get to import whoever survived ME2's suicide mission, in addition to having the opportunity to recruit any of the returning/new squadmates.
Seem like a lot of extra work to continue developing characters for a a group of veterans that have already put $60–$120 in your pocket a head?
Maybe, but not if you make each of the old-school squadmates for non-imported ME3 games DLC.
The characters have already been developed and have backstories attached to them, most of the work has already been done.
For example: Someone picks up Mass Effect 3 as a newcomer to the series after hearing how epic-amazing it is. They have a chill time, but are game for more and check out what else BioWare has to offer within the confines of the game. They witness a lot of the old fans talking up this BAMF Garrus Vakarian and want to know what the fuss is all about. They play through the game with Garrus DLC missions and snarky comments and conclude that he is verily, as they say in the vernacular, "sicknasty." They want to see more of him, in addition to other characters they may have downloaded/returners from ME1, so they mosey on to a game store or to the interweb and purchase the first two games.
EA sells old stock, and it's delicious. Newcomers can discover and then further immerse themselves in Mass Effect. People who have been there from the start are more than satisfied and continue to provide that (also delicious) word of mouth.
... at least I think that makes sense sales/marketing-wise. But then again, I'm studying to be a graphic designer... my ideas on business might be as in-touch as a sales/marketing person's may be on design when they think that Comic Sans or Papyrus is the best idea ever.
Anyway, since everyone was considering exposition... :C
