Hot Fuzz. Highly-skilled, incredibly serious supercop is sent from the city to a small country town because he's making all the other cops look bad. He becomes suspicious when he realizes that the town has an extremely high accident rate, but almost no murder rate. Hijinks ensue. He makes friends (kind of unwillingly) with another officer, the chief's son, who longs for the excitement and adrenaline of action-movie policing (that's what the "Point Break or Bad Boys II?" image is referencing).

I make it sound pretty dull, but it's an awesome movie. You should see it.
(Sand King has moved on to Shaun of the Dead quotes, though. Also an excellent movie from the same creative team, but I think Hot Fuzz improved on it in almost every way)

Now that I've read the description... I can see Saren as Frank too. xD (And being attacked by a swan.)

I think the only movie quote I've recognized here was the Billy Madison one.

Why am I picturing this with Saren as Frank?

...why does it fit so well?

Also, Kaidan = Tony Fisher, Zaeed = Bob Walker (Urz = Saxon), Miranda = Doris Thatcher...Grunt and Wrex = the Andes?

Miranda is 100% Dorris.

"I could have given you the tour of the Normandy. I've been around the station a few times."

I could see Saren as Simon Skinner.

On an unrelated note, since we had some Halo Elite references...I confess that when I first saw the Mass Effect trailer I thought to myself, "I see someone's copying Halo." Of course, then I found out it was a Bioware game and got in right away. I still love both games for different reasons, but I feel bad that I dismissed turians as elite knock-offs.

So, confession's over...am I forgiven?

Dont feel bad, you're not the only one, when i first saw the ME trailer i thought "dude? is that the arbiter?" and at first i thought that mass relays looks like an elongated "O" of halo (in the halo font of course)

but neverthele I believe that the ME serie has distinguished itself from other games very well and I cant wait to play ME 3 and see garrus again

Man - I am NEVER gonna catch this up. Lovin' the Hot Fuzz references though, guys. :)

RE: page 511.... NSFW WARNINGS, PLS! lol. Narrowly avoided awkward.

I know it was pages and pages ago, but re: Female gamers...

Definitely not as rare as they'd like to think, but then I'm not sure what proportion of the male population classifies themselves as gamers that would make a slightly lower proportion of the female population classifying themselves as gamers a rarity.

Myself, I just find amusement in watching how 14 year-old boys go out of their way to white knight for my sister on XBL. Good times.

But I agree, storytelling should be paramount when it comes to a game, not something that comes second in an attempt to tailor a game to a target demographic.

Does it hurt that introducing male characters as love interests allows the player to view a different facet of their psyches?

No, it doesn't. Some chafing, though...

A GENERATION, RUINED. Even myself, I'm contemplating making "Team Garrus" banners to be ridiculous.

I agree. These ‘my pony farm’ games Nintendo are pimping to girls really annoy me. It’s not so much the patronising nature (their ‘Girl Gamer’ mag is all about sunshine and flowers and pink), but the games themselves aren’t even usually that good. They just have ponies/kittens/rainbows in them. Ack!

I get the ‘girl gamers don’t exist’ thing as well. I’m like…well, we do. The market just doesn’t cater for us without being patronising as all hell! Lol (the same goes for ‘women don’t go to the cinema unless thev movie is about shoes’ argument… *sad face*)

I love when devs make games with a female protagonist or main supporting character, purely so they can have a fine behind for the boys to stare at. I remember playing Res. Evil 5 with a guy mate, and he spent the entire game doing 'sniper-scope boobs!' lol (and not killing zombies like he should have. Sigh.)

Twilight makes me sad. It’s like, Stephanie Meyer simultaneously ruined vampires AND strong female protagonists with one fell swoop! (Buffy would be ASHAMED, Bella). But as Collider said, at least they are reading. And at least the girl gamers might grow up to develop taste.

Right.... page 514...I WILL catch up!

its nice seeing a game that breaks the stereotype barrier, rather than having a male protagonist whos a knight in shining armor and ridiculousyly buff and full of testosterone, we get a slightly butchy female character who is graceful and bad****, and who hits on avian-like aliens.

I think characters like Samus, Lara Croft, Femshep, etc. are giving the female population a boost in morale because they show that women are also able to be in the spotlight/take a leading role when it comes to action/shoooter/adventure/rpg games

But thats just my opninion though no need to be spreading it around XD

So... Where do I sign up for the "Garrus ate my heart" support group? :[ I'm a bit late to the ME train having only recently stormed through ME1 and just started with ME2 but damn can't get enough of Garrus. I need something to calm my fangirly outbursts...

Oh and yes, femShepard is the most badass female protagonist I've ever seen, and this is coming from someone who was a faithful Tomb Raider fan since she was 12. :D I really like ME for the fact that your femShep is both strong and kicks ass, but feminine and attractive at the same time... And amazingly enough, she looks realistic and doesn't wear a DD cup bra. While I don't mind super sexy female main characters in games, Shepard and Mass Effect in general is just really refreshing to play compared to all the other games out there.

But I'm going off topic, NEED MOAR GARRUS!

Shepard: So what made you want to become a policeman?
Garrus: Officer.
Shepard: What made you want to become a policeman-officer?
Garrus: I don't remember a time when I didn't want to be a police officer... apart from the summer of 2169 when I wanted to be Kermit the Krogan. It all started with my Uncle Derek. He was a Sergeant in C-Sec. He bought me a police pedal car when I was five. I rode around in it every second I was awake - arresting kids twice my size for littering and spitting. I got beaten up a lot when I was young, but it didn't stop me. I wanted to be like Uncle Derek.
Shepard: He sounds like a good bloke.
Garrus: Actually, he was arrested for selling drugs to students.
Shepard: What a ****...
Garrus: Probably bought the pedal car with the proceeds. Needless to say, I never went near it again. I just let it rust. But I never lost the profound sense of right and wrong I felt at the wheel of that pedal car. I had to prove to myself that the Law could be proper and righteous and for the good of life in the galaxie. It was from that moment that I was destined to be a police officer.
Shepard: Shame...
Garrus: How so?
Shepard: I think you would have made a great Muppet...

I've still not had time to catch up. Where was this troll? What did they do?
(were they responsible for the NSFW images I had to speedy-scroll though. Cos if yes, then "Grrrr - my boss was walking past!" That was the most tense I've been on my lunch-hour in a while lol.

They weren't disrespectin' Garrus, were they? If yes, I hope there was turian headbutting!

@Sefferz. Welcome! This is the lovely thread. We get drunk!  Image IPB

I am really in the mood to watch Hot Fuzz now. Damn you, social life!

I think FemShep makes such a great protagonist because she was a character fist, woman second. The devs didn't start with her blank character page and go "OK: what do we know about her? Number 1 - she is a woman!"

By that, I mean, being female isn't her defining characteristic. Not that gender doesn't define us in some way, but I know a few male (and one female) writers who write female characters by starting off with "OK - how would a woman react to this?" rather than "OK, how would this character react to this?" It's like, depends on the woman, surely? It's the same with books, games and movies. Write the character, not the gender! (Does this make sense?)

Having said that, being a girl doesn't mean all my protagonists have to be female either. I almost always play men in Oblivion and DA...FemShep just rules 'cos Jeniffer Hale kicks behind! Image IPB (and she gets to sex Garrus. And Mark Meer is a bit...meh)
Also - I have nothing against DD cup heroines. I just wish they would wear appropriate support bras for all the activity they do. The point is to strap them down, not push them up! Image IPB (Lara Croft is has got to have the worst back pain ever. And the DoA girls defy physics a lot of the time)

Garrus realted question: how do we feel about turian skin texture? I'm guessing harder than human skin (almost shell-like) but in terms of texture and warmth, etc? I'm thinking quite cool, and slightly rough, but does anyone else have any better insights?

EDIT: Why does that question sound like it's of dubious moral regard when I read it back...?Image IPB

Yeah, Armax and extremegamer were posting and reposting NWS stuff. Guess they found something better to do. I use adblock, so I just put it on the filter and kept scrolling.

About Femshep...yeah, I think the fact that she's basically male Shepard with boobs is actually really good. I've read a lot of interviews and stuff from writers of books and comics talking about how hard it is to write a good female character, and it's like...really? Write good character, make them female, ?????, profit. It's hardly rocket science, but if you start with 'okay, the most important thing to think of for her is that she's a woman', you've already screwed up.

It's really frustrating how pervasive it it; even in ensemble shows, you can break the group down into basic roles (leader, smart person, strong person, funny person, etc), and there's almost always a 'The Girl' slot, occupied by a girl who often doesn't really fit in to the setting and whose entire role and characterization can be broken down to 'she is a girl'.

Same thing happens with video games--you've got a huge range of games for the 'default' male (shooters, fighting games, RPGs, RTSs, adventure games, and more), but when it comes to selling a 'girl game' it's uniformly a sh!tty ponies/family/cooking sim that looks like it was made in Flash and has all the depth of a puddle. And when they don't sell--because they're awful--the game industry sits back and goes, 'well, what are you gonna do? Girls just don't like games'. Drives. me. nuts.

Sooo, Garrus! I always figured he had a higher body temp (dislikes cold, lives on warm planet), but little natural insulation (turian concept art is always all muscle, I don't even know where fatty tissue would go. Also, would explain why they're always fully-clothed, to the point of wearing gloves on a climate-controlled station). So, very very warm skin, with slightly cooler (but still warm) plating.
