Sure, and he came in pretty harsh too. Maybe it's just because that thread about whining the other day got me thinking--it seems that when people just aren't very interested in a character, all of that character's legitimate concerns and complaints get written off as "whining." And frequently it's not a reflection of the character's writing or story, it just shows you how much that player/reader/viewer/whatever connected with the character. That's why there are so many characters many people will find compelling while others will just write off as "whiny."

That's emotional attachment. When people have characters they like; they are willing to find sympathy for them and try to understand them. When they find a character they are uninterested in they end up blocking all the passive sympathy to them because they simply do not care to understand. The easiest way to understand a character is to try and override that apathy and give the character another go, most people don't care for that, though.

Thats another good point actually. Maybe thats why i always found kaidan and liara uninteresting. I guess i should give them another go in ME1 then. And is it just me or is alot of people's signature banners not working today?

Yeah, and people just don't enjoy being dumped on by people they don't like.

Actually, i found ashley to be a pretty interesting character, despite the fact that she is a little racist but thats besides the point. I just hope she actually helps you out in ME3 and/or in dlc.

It did take me more than one playthrough to like Kaiden and Ash. Garrus, Tali, and Wrex just clicked perfectly on their first impression.

I'm sure she will. She is an interesting character, and I found her a lot more interesting playing as a guy. It's that same problem of them running out of things to talk to you about. Plus she's cuter when she's smitten with you. :)

I just read through your replies to scmadsen in the Character discusion thread. You made some very good, points, some I agree with, some I don't. Near the end, I noticed you mentioned how Ash/Kaidan abandoned Shepard. Needless to say, I'm biased and disagree but if you ever want to discuss those points, feel free to pop on over.Image IPB

I like Ashley, but I could never romance her.

Garrus and wrex clicked in really fast. Wrex was like an oversized kermit the frog crossbreed to a t-rex. Pure awesomenss. And then i accidentally killed him off in my first playthrough and i was like http://www.youtube.c...?v=Tim5nU3DwIE] this

Ashley did lose a lot of points for me initially when I found out she can kill Wrex. Wrex is still my favorite character from Mass Effect.

If you speak to Wrex without calming him down, IIRC Wrex eventually says that he's done talking, implying...you know.

I may have missed something considering I have literally never killed Wrex or screwed up the confrontation in any of my games.

I think for me it helped that they weren't presented to me as romanceable. Like, meeting Ashley, Kaiden, and Liara, I just thought "Okay, I will make this work. I will be attracted to them." But it just never really clicked beyond the satisfaction of knowing I'd made all the right conversation choices and gotten some nice-looking folks to get naked. I felt kind of like I was doing the motions and just getting from A to B to C in the relationships. So meanwhile I'm getting to know Garrus, Tali, and Wrex, learning about their crazy alien cultures (and thinking the scary cat-beetle one is kind of suave and has a really sexy voice (not that it would ever go anywhere, THAT WOULD BE CRAZY)), and I ended up only hanging out with the people I am made to be in love with on the ship. I imagine the fans of the first game's LIs had kind of the equal and opposite experience, knowing and resenting the characters they are meant to want to get with while the people they do want to get with are no longer to be got. And that makes for a lot of people with a lot to say about what bad and whiny characters so and so are.

Happened with me for Ash.  I'm in girl-love with her now but one year ago Virmire was the worst decision in the world because if only I could nuke them both.

Also:  Man, survivor poll plays with my emotions.   I wouldn't care so much if we hadn't had those few hours that made it look like there was hope.

Oh well.  At least the Zombie Garrus pictures will not go to waste now.

Yeah, very true. But still i still can't find any reason to actually hate garrus, find him uninteresting would irk me but i would let that slide but hate? I don't think so. And yeah i found the romances in the first game to be really forced. Didn't have a problem with ashley though until the next game.

Hating a character just seems excessive...I mean I'd excuse hating Morinth, but Garrus? come on.

Also, real quick on the "whiny" character thing...seeing people say that makes me so sad. I've seen some really whiny annoying emo characters in my time.

I have not seen one character in Mass Effect that would qualify as "whiny" to me. Not Kaidan. Not Thane. Not Miranda. Definitely not Garrus. I think it's incredibly impressive to have this huge cast of characters with, let's face it, serious issues and yet not of them ever really whine about them at all. They all shoulder their burdens and usually only share if you press them for it. It's all very well done. I always wonder how someone could fail to see that.

I'm going to go with what Ray said and that people who dislike the characters will try to find faults and exaggerate them. For some reason people don't like these characters and then ridiculously accusing them of whining or other inane things.

For some people, he seems to represent something for them. His story is pretty dark, unhappy, and action-y, and they don't like the dark, unhappy, action-y turn the game series has taken. That coupled with the fact that he's a character from ME1 who is there and romanceable in ME2 makes him a good focus of hate, particularly for the people who are only attracted to the female LIs.
