I'm quite fond of this thread and it's members, so I'd like to post this group. It's for character analysis and discussion, join if you're so inclined. Only rule is not to flame each other, but then again I don't think I need to worry about that from you all.

P.S. Garrus' voice is awesome. Badass extraordinaire
Collider seeks to ruin what little amount of sleep I get by throwing more discussion threads my way! Noooo! (Thanks.

)
And Garrus's voice is beyond awesome. It's... it's... It just 'is'.

It's kind of like the Tali debate. I don't necessarily need to see Tali's face if Bioware doesn't want that. I need to see a quarian face because I'm curious.
Likewise with Garrus: I'm not sure I need to see shirtless Garrus in-game because it would make me uncomfortable, I won't lie. (I'm the stick in the mud raining on ya'll's parade, my bad.) Reading about it in fanfic is one thing, seeing it onscreen is a whole different taco.
But I do want to know what a turian looks like under the armor. Somehow, some way. Maybe updated concept art, I'd be fine with that.
I agree. I actaully find that in 'love' scenes (books, movies, games included) less is more. The more suggestion, left to the imagination, the better. Especially, I think, in the case of Garrus/Shep. For a start, I think shirtless Garrus in bed would ultimatly look kind of silly. And I think I'd also feel a bit uncomfortable if there was any blatent attempt to fetishize nekkid turians. I don't really see their relationship as one based on physical attraction anyway. It's more of a trust/respect/admiration thing (IMO), which develops into an attraction. I have the same problem with it in fanfic, to be honest. I've read very few who have managed to get the balance right without it being a bit silly (pot.kettle.black.). But anyway, silt. You are not alone!

However, I do want to see what the various races look like out of uniform out of curiosity, and because I'd liek to know what things the art team were thinkign about when it came to designing outfits, etc.
Re: FemShep having to initiate. I know everyone has a preference, but I think that when you think about the interactions with regards to the characters, it makes a lot of sense for her to take the lead. For starters, she's probably quite an intimidating person to be around - she is Commander Shepard! Add in to that the stakes attached to the mission, personal baggage, risk of crew disruption, and the personal consequences for those who put themselves out there only to be rejected are going to be worse than usual. Shepard herself is quite good at calling it as she sees it, so if she feels an attraction, I find it really believable that she would express it. She is a very take charge person anyway. Also, looking at the characters individually: Jacob is very receptivbe to FemShep, but he doesn't initiate. This makes sense because of a, Miranda, and b, while fraternisation isn't disallowed, I'd imagine TIM would be less than impressed if he harrassed their star player, and since he doesn't know much more about FemShep other than that she is a BAMF, you can see why he might not want to make the first move.
Thane: Thane is making his peace with the galaxy. Shepard reawakens something in him he thought was gone, and this shakes his resolve somewhat. If he made the first move, he would be opening himself up deliberatly to life again (when he knows he has little time left, this is painful), but if she makes the first move he is swept up by her.
Garrus: Well, I've talked about my feeling re:Garrus and Shep before. I don't think Garrus could have ever intiasted that romance (alhough he is the one who brings up sex first). For starters, she is his friend, commander, and a totally different spieces. I'm not saying Garrus had never considered it (although I don't think he had, but that's me), just that I don't think it would have ever occurred to him to cross that line. He has more than anyone else to lose if things go wrong.
In addition to that, if Shepard has an LI from ME1, and this is know (which anyone who is with her when she meets them again will be aware of) then, are the ME2 LIs really going to want to presume she is over them? (Especially Garrrus/Kaiden: bro-code! lol)
But, anyway, that's just how I read it.
Character hate is silly (unless it's that awesome kind of hate which is really love. Like when someone is awesome but so evil that you have to hate them, but you love them as well). I understand personal preference, but it's rare that people who claim to 'hate' a character know enough about them to be contructive as to why. Usually it's more character disinterest, which is more understandable, but people are less vocal about. Each to their own. Hating a character (or anthing) because ofi t's fanbase, however, is just daft, IMO.
Also, anytime anyone complains about the ME characters 'whining', I point them in the direction of Samara. One of the renegade responses to her conversation about Monrith, etc, is 'Cry Me a River'. To which Samara replies something like "I am not looking for sympathy. I am only answering what you asked me. If it bothers you, I'll stop." The characters only talk to you about personal stuff if you ask them. If you don't want to know, don't ask! (also, I hardly think the scale of problems those guys are dealing with can make them simply telling Shep or asking for help 'whining'. "They are all out of Pepsi and I want some!" or "I'm gonna miss the next episode of Dr Who and that's so unfair!" is whining. "I am dying, I want to leave the universe a better place before I go, but I fear my son will follow in my footsteps and ruin his life so can you help me stop him from killing, please?" is not. Nor is "My entire team were killed as a result of a personal betrayal against me and I want to see justice for them." Nor is "I have been raped, used and abused by everyone I've ever gotton close to, and was the subject of torturous experiamentaion in my childhood...." well, you get the idea. lol)
Anyhoo. Random responses to earlier thoughts.
I think the thread has slowed down because all those accross the pond are abed, and those of us in Europe are in work/school (with the overwhelming urge to check this thread first thing in the morning, and
waste spend our lunch break catching up and posting. But the thread was bananas yesterday! Jolly good show!

I really need to stop essay posting at lunch!

Edit: this took me so long to type, other people ninjad my points. lol. Sorry.
Also, BlueL wins again. *wishes she could draw!*
