Also, where is my Shepard VI?!  I insist that it be installed into the main battery to nag at Garrus whenever he calibrates.

Where IS the VI? I wanted to see that! :P

My Shepard also should have the VI... I guess it doesn't appear on the Normandy? xD She wanted to have it around for amusement.

The Council: We admit it! The Reapers exist! Come save us! D:

Shepard VI: Solve your own problems.

argh this thread always grows by like 10 pages during the measly 6 hours of sleep I get.  Well I won't have time to catch up beyond this page all about why aliens wear clothing so I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in now and be back later =).

I think the alien species wear clothing for the same reasons humans do, with "modesty" very likely NOT the reason clothes were invented, despite it's popularity....and cold isn't the only reason one needs clothes either.  Sun, dust, dryness, cold, wind, insects, thorny things in the woods, protecting your feet from rocks on the ground, and yes special protection from the elements for the sensitve bits, or comfort (when running, applies to the boys and girls I'd say )...clothes were necessity or advantage over the other guy first and then our creative minds kicked in and they gained other uses too, like modesty depending on the society, or as signs of wealth and affluence, since they *are* material goods, after all.   And once humans and aliens made it to their space-faring stage, they would continue to want them for those reasons, plus need them for those that travel to different environments, or, you know, in the vacuum of space.

So I guess my point is I don't think you'd have a bunch of turians running around in loincloths on Palaven...unless it was some sort of "traditional dress" outfit for special occasions or something, the way some humans do.

Also just a clarification, someone's post said the turians "evolved from avian species."  I thought that the codex only says they "appear avian to humans" and that that entry was actually taken out for ME2.  And that a dev or someone sort of modified it to bird-dinosaur.  So they didn't necessarily evolve from a flying species...? Because the way I had always interpreted it was that we don't really know *what* they evolved from, technically speaking, it's just that to humans they seem avian because humans have to compare everything to an earth species they are familiar with (like Hanar being "jellyfish").

Speaking of, in ME3 do you want to be able to micromanage your squad's armor again (like in ME1) or do you want them to stick to unique, though unalterable, costumes (like in ME2)?  I hope they all retain their unique outfits, only you can switch up the colors.

I like their signature costumes, I just want more practical ones.  Garrus needs his armor fixed, and everybody else needs some freakin' ARMOR. Jeebus.

You know, with all this alien love talk, I'm reminded of the movie, "Earth Girls are Easy."

Hottest Jeff Goldblum ever. (Never thought I'd say that.)

Naw, hottest Jeff Goldblum was in Independence Day.

First off ^^^ I loved that turian. Reminds me of one of our neighbors when I was a kid :D

and second: *sigh* You people are killing me! I go to sleep, get up and bam, I'm 5 conversations out of the loop and have to figure out how to get all my replies in without being 1 full page of thread all on my own LOL

<quotes and stuff edited for reduced space hogging>

Was I the only one more worried about my space hamster and fish after the Collectors came on board Normandy?

Shep: If they killed my hamster and fish they're totally gonna pay. I'll kill those mothers.
Garrus: They took the crew too.
Shep: Huh? Oh yeah. And if they hurt what's her face and what's his name I'll give them a good tongue lashing.
Garrus: Hey! I thought you said I was the only one.
Shep: No, I meant...whatever. I'll hurt them.

Hehe... That was actually my thought as well...

When I got back on the ship, I told my bf "I am going up to my cabin now and if those bastages killed my fish and hamster, I am going to be reallllly pissed. I didn't go up there before and after every single mission to feed those darn things just so some mind-warped ex-prothean could vaporize them!"
and he said, "Didn't they just take your whole crew... shouldn't you already be really pissed?"
to which I replied, "Yeah, yeah.. I'll get them back, but it's not like the stores are gonna restock my pets!"

The convo ended with him giving me a kind of worried look before shaking his head and leaving the room LOL

I did think Jeff Goldblum was pretty attractive in "Earth Girls are Easy."

Thank you everyone that enjoyed my little skits. I've been really rusty and I really wasn't expecting any of theme to be funny.

During Thane's loyalty mission, you find out that there's a Shepard Virtual Image (like Avina) that gets circulated.  You can ask Mouse for it, but as far as I know, it does nothing in game.

I am hoping that either DLC or ME3 takes care of that though.  I'd love to see my Shep say "I delete garbage like you on the way to REAL errors."  I LoL'd XD

Lmao, god we get to decide where to put the shepard vi. I'm either going to put it by Joker and EDI, or Garrus, just to annoy them =p

Does anyone else wish they actually gave you Mordin's 'information packet' in your terminal as an easter egg, and when you click on it the view changes to a quick shot of Shepard doing various cute animations? Like when you first click it, it goes to a view of Shep going "" .. And then stuff like one where Shep looks nervously over each shoulder before hunching over to read, and one where Shep tilts his/her head all the way sideways as he/she looks at the screen, with a very confused look on his/her face... Just would've been a funny little add-on.

I would have loved that... actually I was almost expecting it (and I was expecting something similar after I got the Shepard VI) but no luck :(
I went straight up to the cabin after the Mordin talk to check  I was expecting Shep. to sit down and start watching with varying degrees of confused and interested and surprised expressions with a choice wheel underneath of "keep reading - "Well, gotta reasearch it some time." / come back some other time - "I think I've had enough for now..." / delete the message - 'What the... ****! Get off my computer!'" I would have laughed... and laughed... and laughed... :P

Anyway, to the aliens with clothes thing... None of them have fur/feathers or other biological coverings beyond differing kinds of skin, and I presume most of their planets will have weather in one form or another, so clothes could have come in for them as guard from weather (even the turian homeworld is bound to have rain or wind or, heck, sandstorms for all I know and just because their skin is thick and they have certain areas plated to protect from the radiation, doesn't mean they like the feel of sand pelting against them or being soaked by rain or whatever is relevant to their weather patterns. Same for asari, krogan etc.)

Modesty may or may not be an issue as too little is known about the cultures to say whether this is as much of a concern for them as for humans... I would however assume that in an intergalactic community, races who themselves do not have the modesty issue in their culture would nonetheless adapt a certain level of clothing to allow for proper diplomatic relations... For instance the elcor may, for all we know, have no modesty issues and perhaps only wear clothes at all if there's currently a reason (much like we would only open up an umbrella if we needed it against weather), but since they deal with other races who might feel uncomfortable with them standing there "naked", they wear pants even though there's no real reason to do so on a climate regulated space station etc.
As such, I would assume that even space-faring races who wouldn't see the need for clothes would develope some to make inter-species trade/diplomacy etc. easier. The more contact there is, the more the "clothing" thing would spread, so I would assume that even in the big cities on homeworlds where aliens are likely to be would see their inhabitants clothed even if, perhaps, out in the countryside where there are unlikely to be as many aliens, they might run around without. Much as a nudist will still wear clothes when out amongst people who do or when at work etc. and then remove them at home or in nudist areas where it's not an issue.

Given the major differences among asari outfits, it seems it's become a decorative or even status-related thing for them... this would speak for them having a clothing tradition already rather than just wearing them to be polite. Since there's nothing to indicate that they have particularly resistant skin etc. this would again make sense on a weather protection level, whether or not modesty is an issue for them. The clothes also give an idea as to what stage an asari is in, which could have already developed on the homeworld as these stages of developement are obviously important in asari culture with seperate expectations and ideas about what one does in which stage.

Anyway, I'm not really surprised or have any feeling of it being unrealistic that the aliens are wearing clothes especially as we've only run into them in mixed race situations (Citadel, Omega, Ilium etc.) or warzones (krogan homeworld is one giant warzone as far as I can tell :P) where it would make sense to wear clothes to avoid weird/creepy incidents with other species or armor so as not to get insta-killed.
I would not expect turians to run around naked or half naked in any case because they are a military society which means they are likely to wear uniforms or at least something you can pin a rank insignia on. I don't think they're the uber galactic military force based on naked combat ^_^ and like the codex says, their skin can't stop bullets and things, it's just thicker, not armored.

*breaks out her bf who is a military historian and has books with relevant illustrations* Apparently the only people known to have fought naked were Galacians (but it's likely/presumed that they wore clothes in regular daily life, certainly in winter). Romans had tunics i.e. shirts, and in colder climates (i.e. invasion of Britain) they even had pretty sturdy looking ones/cloaks and things and in regular cities they had also tunics/togas etc. (finally his edumacation has come in handy for me :P)

for clarification: they had tunics on w/ their skirt things and possible chest armor. galacians had a helmet and a shield and nothing else... *sings* "you can leave your hat on..." (sorry just popped into my head)

I know for the most part practice fighting/sparring was done naked by most cultures. The Turks still do something similar except they have loin cloths now.

We also can't rely too much on any information about other cultures fighting in actual wars naked, mostly because its the winning side that talk about the wars. Romans were notorious for making other cultures look really bad. What's sad is that their account is the only ones we have because they "assumed direct control" of them. :D
