Jacob, then Garrus. I went through I think it was three full romance conversations with Jacob. I avoided Garrus like the plague until I had Jacob's romance "locked in". Then I went and talked to Garrus about reach and flexibility. During the second romance conversation Garrus mentioned not wanting to be in a love triangle. I told him I was choosing him, and then went and broke it off with Jacob. Jacob's a nice guy but just not my type. Garrus makes me grin like an idiot every time I talk to him, Jacob doesn't.janeym27 wrote...

I've never done that. What order do you need to romance them in for that to work? I really want to let Garrus know "I choose you!"

Thanks. Good to know. Jacob is a nice guy with nice guy abs, but he's no Garrus Vakarian. And he can go off with Miranada anyway. Plus, his romance conversation makes me wince.
I'm the same way: I can't have a conversation with Garrus without a big stupid smile on my face.

Mutemath - "Noticed"
I'm in love with this song in general, but I feel like it captures Garrus's reaction to Shepard's suggestion that there could be something more between them... I'm not going to analyze it any more than that and hope that you enjoy the song. (Side note: Don't try to follow the song with the lyrics (may impair enjoyment), evidently there are two versions of the song floating around (both are lovely) and the video poster, naturally, posted the wrong version in the description.)
Muse - "Starlight"
This is officially my Doctor/Rose song, but the somewhat hopeless bits juxtaposed with romance with a certain someone make it fit alright with Garrus/Shepard.
Poets of the Fall - "Lift"
With all that Garrus has experienced between Shepard's death and "resurrection," it's a wonder that he can continue on. But with a certain commander...
Stars - "Look Up"
This song reminds me a little more of Shepard helping Garrus pick up the pieces after he rejoins the squad and how their relationship progresses from there.
Well, I guess your mileage may vary on any of these, but there you go.

I've been writing a series of fics. These are letters written by the crew of the Normandy SR1 sometime between the destruction of the SR1 and Shepard's resurrection. I've called them the Forgotten Letters. I'm slowly working my way through the crew, one at a time, as inspiration strikes.
I just completed Garrus' letter, and .. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this was the most difficult letter to write so far. Garrus is such a complex character and his relationship with Shepard is very multi-layered, which made it very difficult for me to get a handle on what he'd write in a letter to a dead Shepard.
The other letters, generally are set at an indeterminate point of time as described above - But the motivation for Garrus' letter was inspired by Sialater's excellent The Funeral, which sets it in a much narrower window - This letter is written after the destruction of the Normandy SR1, but before the events of Redemption, before Liara has decided to give Shepard to Cerberus.
Garrus is one of my favorite characters, and I'm very aware that everyone in this thread loves him to bits, so .. I hope you all like it, and I hope you all feel that I've done him justice.Shepard,
I talked to Liara the other day. We.. We hadn't really spoken since... Well, you know. She's crazy, that one. Even crazier than she was when we were on the Normandy with that whole... mystic Asari 'embrace eternity' crap. We talked after.. Well, we had a memorial service for you. You wouldn't have liked it. I guarantee it.
She said the strangest thing to me.
"If Shepard could be brought back, what would you do?"
That's what she said to me. Crazy damn Asari. Brought back? You're dead. You got spaced. There's no coming back from that. Not even for you. What the hell did she mean? I think I need you here to answer that one for me.
I mean, hell, you were always the one with the answers, Shepard. Kill Dr. Saleon, don't kill Dr. Saleon? You had the answer. Bring Saren in alive, don't even waste the time? You had the answer. You always had the damn answer.
You know how irritating that was? You know how frustrating it was to know that you always had the answer, and you always had a reason for it. And you know what the worst part was, the most annoying part of all? Your damn reasons were good. And your answers were right.
Dammit, Shepard, back then I had no questions. I had it all figured out. C-Sec was stifling, paperwork got in the way of doing the right thing and I just knew I could do a better job if the game was played by my rules. And then you showed up and I took my chance. I could see it, right in front of me. Here was a chance to do things my way. The right way. Show everyone how it was done. Show you how it was done.
But it didn't work out that way, did it? You saw beyond the badge and the gun. Beyond the confidence. You saw me. The real me. The me I didn't even know existed until I met you. And you knew that I didn't have any damn answers of my own. Not the right ones, anyway. No, I didn't impart any fancy Turian military doctrine wisdom to the jumped up wannabe human Spectre. You didn't learn from me. I learned from you. We all did.
You were the glue that held us all together. What is that human saying? The whole is greater than the sum of its parts? Put together - We were a whole. And you were the one that made it happen. You were the nexus. We were drawn to you and we could no more escape the force of your personality than Palaven can escape its orbit. And then you left us; and now we are wandering aimlessly through the void like a planet with no star, pulled many directions by many forces, but none strong enough to capture us like you did.
You shook my world view, Shepard. You redefined me. You took a C-Sec agent trying to do the right thing in the wrong place and you gave him a purpose. And then you died, and .. now I need a new purpose .. Something else to give my life meaning. When I first met you, I thought I had all the answers. I was wrong. You showed me that. And now you're gone, but I still need you here.. to.. to answer the questions I can't answer myself anymore. To explain the things I can't understand.
When Liara asked me what she asked me.. I answered in the only way I could. I told her that I would do.. anything you needed.
But I still don't know what she meant.
I wish you were here. I wish you could explain it to me. But you're not, and I have to figure it out myself.. But.. Wherever you are, Shepard. Wherever you've gone.. I hope you know where I am, and that.. I'll be here if you need me.
Garrus
I know this was about 10 pages ago, but I opened it in a tab last night an have only just read it. It made me sad. Good show.

I don't. I'm paragon. Me singing would hurt other people and I don't want that to happen.
So, we have writers in here. We have drawing artists in here. Any chance there are musicians/singers? We need a Garrus musical song. (oh no what did I just say?)
...that reminds me of that Garrus music project I started about 2 months ago. Well, I'm never going to finish that, so it's up to you guys!
... Hmm.. possibilities, possibilities...
edit: p.s. Janey - I'm glad you liked the letter

We go back to Pokemon far too much. Or was that just a coincidence?
But yeah, I may try out locking in Jacob and dumping him for Garrus.
I don't hate Jacob, he's a nice guy, though he doesn't seem it in romance mode from what I've heard from you all, but I don't think I could really be interested in him, and it'd be interesting to see Garrus' comments as well as Jacob's.
Well, I'm going to go to my sister's to "roost" for today. I'm going to watch District 9, and maybe Mean Girls, considering how it's referenced quite a bit here, other than Hot Fuzz.
Keep up the Garrus.

Oh, I'm sure they will. But I'm just getting a regular DVD version of it. Someday, hopefully in a few months, I'll finally have a blueray player and can upgrade... so meh. Besides, I own the regular and collector's extended versions of all three Lord of the Rings movies... I have a habit of getting both versions when I really like a flick. Mostly because while *I* might not mind sitting for four+ hours without a problem, some of my friends might want a slightly shorter version. Heh.
I just can't make myself hit on Jacob. Heck, I can barely TALK to him because it makes my Shep sound like a sleezy porn star, even when they're talking normally... it creeps me out because it just... is not my Shepard. At all. Ever. So if someone could youtube the cuttlebone comment and/or Garrus' comment about getting picked over Jacob, I'd also be very happy...

Exactly. While talking to Jacob I was all like "WTF?! Are you flirting with him?! STOP IT! SAY SOMETHING RUDE!"... These were ones of my very fer renegade points.
But myabe I'll try that while going through the game for the second time (I screwed up the 1st one, I wanted to save the crew, didn't noticed that the game actually notices the time flow, moreover, going for insanity achievement, yay!)
Still haven't decided what I'm gonna do with Sidonis this time. I have mixed feelings about it.

I'm on playthrough... uh... 6? I think. My Insanity playthrough, after trying the other classes and testing myself from Normal straight to Hardcore. (That was a bit of a shock... but doable.) I have never let Sidonis die... I can't let him do it. Something in me cringes. Similar to even talking to Jacob, poor guy. I have ONE playthrough where I romanced someone else... (Thane) and every other playthrough was latched onto Garrus. XD
I didn't know about the crew dying if you took too long, either. I just... never waited that long. I usually had all of my quests, including the side ones, done before O-4. So learning that it could happen made me go 'oh... wow... really?'
Also, that fluffy snuggly picture set is adooooorable. I love that Garrus is wearing his scouter while reading. Haha.
Grabbed Avatar and found an excuse to pick up a cheap bottle of wine that was suggested to me by the lady who showed me a few apartments the other day. (Isn't that sad? Even looking at new apartments leads me to discussions of alcohol and suggestions by random people... Eeeeehheh.)
