We've had the 'how old is Garrus' convo before, so I thnk before we could get definiitve on this, we'd need to see some turians with ages we know a little bit about.

I'd suggest comparing the Turian councilor's fringe/mandibles and Garrus' fringe/mandibles. The former is most likely older than Garrus. Garrus is under 30.

Yeah... but I think we need a wider spectrum. Otherwise it's too much of an individual thing. The Turian councillor is most certainly older than Garrus (as is Lorik) but that's only a limited example. Also, I'd want to see some younger Turians as well,

Yes: on everything else I am prepared to have speculation from dubious in-game information. On this, I demand scientific statistical analysis!! :P

I am a stange one, I am.

What is considered conventionally attractive in Turian culture. Is Garrus' shorter, thinner mandibles and medium fringe a good look, or is he a tad fugly by Turian standards?

That's a really good question, janey.  Of course some of the fics say that Garrus is considered handsome by turian standards, but of course they are going to say that, LOL.
Actually, even if I interviewed 100 turians and they all voted him Most Ugly Turian, I'd still have to disagree.
Here's another pic, since I can't seem to get enough Garrus in here today:

I think this thread needs to get back on topic, guys and gals. Remember what Woo said.

So had anybody besides me noticed the different mandible weights/lengths on the turians? Because Garrus has shorter, skinnier mandibles than others, and I wonder if that just means he's younger or what.

I know, I know. We are kinda still on the Garrus subject with links involving inside jokes, but I know what you mean.

I haven't actually noticed variations in mandibles before... so they have different weights and lengths? I guess it could be an indication of age, though it may also be just something genetic...

Yes, I noticed this while I'm busy replaying ME1.  Like the human NPCs, there are some "stock" turians, but some of them look more individual than others.  Chellick, for instance, has long mandibles that go to the very end of his jaw, and they're heavier.  Pallin's are similar.  I have not looked to see if this is the case in ME2 (they may all have one generic model in ME2 with recolors, but that would be silly if the models were already made since ME1...) , but it is a great reference point for remembering turians by their faces.  (Ah, poor turian shopkeeper, humans just don't pay attention to turian mandible types, fringes, skin tones, eye colors, and face paint like they should, do they?  But you're still a jerk to Refund Guy.)

I'm not sure about a long fringe meaning anything, but the mandibles seem to be thicker, and longer, on characters who are in power.  Possibly this is due to age--maybe Garrus isn't actually completely mature yet?  Possibly genetics.  In which case, Garrus is probably not considered the "rugged" type by turians, not with those thin little mandibles, although I tend to think he's supposed to be attractive to other turians (at least until the scarring, and what he says about the scars to Male Shepard tends to agree with that theory).

The NPC thugs who stand around with the Keeper-scanning salarian  (or am I thinking the krogan smuggler?) have thicker, longer mandibles, but they are also shaped differently, so that they show a lot more of the turians' fangs than Garrus's mandibles show of his--or any of the important NPCs I can remember besides Saren, actually.

Note: Never engage in a forum mandible thickness discussion while drinking wine and watching The Aristocrats. Your brain makes confusing mistakes in processing all the info...

...carry on.

Yeah, it's a shame we have all this good speculation and thoughtful input, but it's unlikely most of it will be confirmed.

I see. I guess I'll have to look at turian mandibles in a little more detail next time I play. I haven't actually thought much about how it seems humans can't distinguish between turians.

I'm not entirely sure about fringes and mandibles, and their correlation between age, power, and attractiveness, actually.

That is a very good pic. /saved.

Do you think (regardless of comparitive attractiveness) that Garrus is a 'ladies man'?

I see it in a lot of fics, but I'm not so sure. I think if he is, it's in a Dean Winchester kind of way: he gets girls, but only in so far as they don't get in the way of his mission...

Well if I had to say, the fringe and mandibles probably have more to do with genetics than anything else. Just as humans have different facial shapes.

He got that Turian who he was sparring with, and if you play as male Shepard he says he gets hit on all the time. The latter may just be joking around with a male friend though.

I'm so pathetic...I don't think I'll ever get enough Garrus information to satisfy me.
Seriously, this board has made my addiction even worse. LOL

Agreed. But within that, human societies make assumptions or associations about certain bodies types/face shapes etc and personality traits. For example: blonds are very sexual, but very stupid. (I'm a blond. People do respond to this steryotype, even today.). Who is to say there are not similar associations being made in turian society to do with fringe and mandible size?

@Flammie. The Aristocrats. Just... don't. (You are too young, anyway. :P)

It's very possible. Maybe we'll get an idea in ME3. Especially considering that we may be going to Palaven.

Too late, I wiki'd it. It sounds interesting, to say the least. And too young? I resent that.

There could very well be stereotypes and preconceptions, I guess. The main problem is any evidence we actually have is often vague or unsatisfactory, so there's only our conjecture for things like this, when really the only thing that'll help is if Bioware shows us or something.

I dunno, I don't think it would be feasible for Shep to go to Palaven without full armor. The radiation would be too much of a problem for a human. And let's face it, it just wouldn't be as fun that way.

Garrus doesn't like blonds anyway  :P

But yeah, I think there might be associations like that in turian society. Oh, BW, give us MOAR!

Do you think it's anything like Haestrom, only less-so?  I mean, Garrus would suffer damage on Haestrom like everyone else, but if the damage was more subtle, turians could escape unscathed and other species would still be damaged.

Short term exposure to Palaven's radiation might not be harmful to human.  I think it's just the constant exposure over a lifetime is what turian's have their plating to protect against.
