I liked mega-limericking even if I didn't get a cameo... ^_^

Cursed RL! >:( Taking me away from my favorites thread all of the time....I have been working on a moar serious Garrus pic, but alas, it is seriously slow-going. I'm so type-A- it has to be RIGHT. I keep looking at these sketches like "that mandible's too high" or "His finge is way too long".

I think I will not ever be done. Anyway, you guys rock my socks and at least I can come here and be made to smile.

With regard to Garrus being a ladies' man:

I see this in a lot of fics too, but I'm not sure I agree with it.

He's a very loyal person, and I can't imagine him not taking relationships seriously.  He does not strike me as the type to treat others casually.

I *can* see an extension of the whole "Stress relief" thing, particularly if that's common in the turian military, and they culturally don't equate having sex with being in a relationship.  (As opposed to humans where having one-night stands on a regular basis is really not seen as desirable behaviour, particularly if it lasts for an individual's whole life and not just a few "Wild years.").  If it's generally accepted in turian culture that battle comrades sleep together, then I could see him having had several partners in the past without necessarily having a lot of experience with boyfriend-girlfriend relationships.  And that's how I prefer to play it.

It might have originally been like that warlord. But then in the romance seen you could see it is something much more then that.

Oh, I didn't mean Garrus and Shep. I'm certain he honestly loves her.

I was trying to answer a question a few pages back about whether Garrus was, in his past, a ladies' man.

Nah, that's not until after the Absolut Raspberri.

And an earlier post made me think:  If the focus on procreation and reproduction is what drives a society to reject homosexuality, krogans must be VERY homophobic.  What do you all think?

Kinda depends on how the krogan genophage works--in the first game, it's implied that once a krogan is sterile, it's sterile, no hope, affects male + female krogans. They probably wouldn't care, if you can't breed you can't breed, doesn't matter what you do with your sperm then. Buut in the second game, Mordin says that it only affects fertility and doesn't induce sterility, which means that every krogan has a chance to reproduce as long as it keeps trying--eventually the stars will align and his number will come up. An exclusively homosexual krogan would run into more problems in this scenario.

Though, thinking about it, Wrex drives home the point that most krogans don't care about their dying race at all, and don't focus on reproduction. Seems like most krogans wouldn't care, then (though even Wrex might not kick the hypothetical homosexual krogan out, he seems pretty big on finding a use/job for everyone regardless of what krogan society usually cares about). Actually, krogan might favor a 'battle buddies', blowing off steam (wait, that quote went somewhere horrible) kind of relationship with other males; since female krogan are sequestered in camps, their only real chance at sex is going gay or going xeno--and asari are just too squishy. Where are you supposed to get a proper grip?

So, random thing I've noticed in
several fanfics is that turians can kinda purr. What are everyone's
thoughts on that? Does Garrus purr or no?

Eh, not really a bit of fanon that I'm fond of. I imagine he might sort of rumble/growl (hum filtered through flanging)...though technically speaking that's also a kind of purr. Maybe I just don't like the connotations of the word 'purr' there. I don't want to think of my cat when I'm reading a romance (or...more than that) fic.

Stories will describe people as "purring" sometimes, so I just tend to assume (and hope) fic writers just mean a happy "hmm" sound and not a literal purr. Garrus is not a feline!

Yeah I've seen that purring thing a lot.  Saren in the first game (the Argh! Rahr! scene, haha) actually does growl, very much like a large feline, so I suppose some people might generalize it to other cat noises.  Alternatively I've seen that kind of thing in so many fics, even regarding humans.  "He purred his satisfaction" or was 'practically purring' or even saying that his laughter 'rumbled in his chest' or what have you (can you tell I'm not a writer?).  So I'm thinking it's just a common descriptive crutch that gets interpreted more literally with turians because they appear more animal-like.

Turians have been compared to goddamn everything--I've seen birds, dinosaurs, cockroaches, lizards, District 9 aliens, those Halo guys...I prefer the raptor/avian connection, if we must make one. But people get cats mostly because of their :3 face. \\'w'/

Anderson compared Turians to dinosaurs and birds, so yea, I think you have the right idea.

Now you've got me wondering if turians leg spurs are poisonous. Would they be sharp enough for that? I don't remember...

It seems unlikely. Surely it would have been mentioned if turians are poisonous - if not by the codex, then by Mordin.

It would make for some amusing scenarios, though :P

Mordin would have mentioned that, getting poisoned is not good. Some parts of the Turian body are sharp though.

It's just hit me that we do have some implied canon about the strength of turians as compared to humans--Cerberus Daily News. If turians were significantly stronger or more physically capable than humans, no way they'd be in the same weight class or even allowed to actually compete against each other in legit MMA fights.

Somehow, I don't think turians would purr like cats... but I've seen the word "purr" used for humans too, so they might not mean it literally. Turians, or at least Saren, definitely growl though - then again, so can humans. At least one of my Shepards would be the type to growl back.

I tried to find a youtube video of Saren's growl, but instead I found Saren as Shepard. xD (Even if I had the PC version, I'd be afraid to break the game attempting a mod... but that one is so awesome. Too bad it's not Saren's voice.) I was thinking of making a "Saren Shepard" just to see his Paragon/Renegade score.

...Also, now that I've looked at several up-close screenshots of Saren, I've realized even more differences between him and regular turians. I wonder how much of it is just the enhancements, and how much is just normal genetic variation. With two playthroughs, I'm surprised how much I didn't notice before. Same with the different fringe/mandible lengths of other turians, I'll pay more attention to it next time.

Regarding purring/growling/etc:

I look at it this way - turians are an alien species. It makes sense that they would have biological and cultural means of expressing themselves that wouldn't be the same as humans (or Earth animals).

But humans tend to interpret things in terms of their own experiences.

So I don't think that turians purr like cats (ie true purr), but I think it's perfectly reasonable that they would make a sound to express pleasure that a human being might interpret as a purr, because it's the closest thing a human could think of to describe it, either because of what it sounds like, or because of the occasion that causes the sound (ie happiness, comfort.)

I myself like the idea of a growling-like sound being the equivalent of a human sigh. But if someone writes a story with Garrus purring, that doesn't put me off.

Beavers--wait, what? You're comparing turians to Canadians now??

Shepard: Why can't we fly from Omega to Illium without detouring through the Tim Hortons' fly-thru on the Citadel?!

Joker: Don't look at me, Garrus insists. You know how he gets without coffee.
