I lost and could not regain Miranda's loyalty on one of my playthroughs - she survived, but I lost Legion to the seeker swarms at the end of the biotic specialist escort. Damnit, I loved that toaster. (Loved, not *mordincough*loved kthx.)

If you thought seeing Legion get killed by those things was bad, just imagine how horrible it must be for anyone who's not a robot. I saw someone who had Garrus die like that. The screams were horrible and they could still be heard in the radio after you get through the door.

I'm not so sure that the Council doesn't believe in the Reapers. Maybe it was all on purpose to keep Shepard from knowing what they are doing. They couldn't trust him/her with that info. What if Cerberus found out, did it and took all the credit or even worse they finally take out the Council. Maybe they just want to avoid mass panicking. The other day someone presented an interesting view point about the Turian Councilor. I think that was made by a fan though, if it wasn't then I'd be extremely happy if I found that lying around Anderson's office somewhere.
Seems clear it's fan material to me, but very well thought out. It would definitely make sense that the Council has merely been holding back information from Shepard all this time. I think one of the best points that post makes is the reminding us about how Ashley/Kaiden were on a "secret" Alliance (and Council?) mission on Horizon. I had kind of forgotten about the "secret" part.

Yes I thought it was fan made too. It would be great if that was true. I think it's too much to hope for though. I really do hope he's different in ME3. I bet the other council would probably just put you in trial and charge you as guilty for working with terrorists if you're a paragon. Ugh I hate the human council soo much. I
wish the Council and Captain Anderson had a more significant role in ME2. That's one thing I missed from ME1, I'd even like it if Udina was also important. Talking to the Illusive man is not as fun.

Lol, thanks, it's from my game (I had to record it by filming the TV, but I suppose that's obvious. I was trying not to giggle). I was hoping at least one person would have a weird enough sense of humor to appreciate it like I did. I can see 90% of ppl who watch that just scratching their heads and saying "Huh?"

You hear somewhere over the news that the Council is quietly rebuilding their fleets stronger; I do hope they're not quite as DURR as they seem. One way or another, I WILL make the turian councilor tsundere for Shepard!Splinter Cell 108 wrote...

I would be absolutely overjoyed if that was true. Everybody hates the Turian Councilor so much and I.. I have a love hate relationship with the guy. Everything he says something smarmy I'm just internally going "HAHA. OH YOU : D *hand flop.*" It would be so awesome if he turned out to be decently wise in the end.

On an utterly unrelated note. Does anyone else think Garrus' fringe (I think that's what that's called on his head) gives him a skater boy look and that makes him even more awesome than he already is. I'm a bit of a sucker for spiky hair. There I admited it.

Pretty much all of this. I really don't know where all of this "oh noes, cameos!" thing is coming from, because ME2 left me with the distinct impression that whoever survives is going to be there with you for the finale. That's the entire point of the game, really. These are your characters, these are their stories, and you job is to get them out alive...to just disappear in ME3??silentstephi wrote...
Honestly, I think the biggest hurdle the ME3 team is going to have is coming up with how they're going to fit everyone into this world they created. Regardless of who's died in your save.
We're encouraged to get the job done and make sure our team is prepped and ready to go. Keeping people alive is VERY easy. Since finding out the secret of keeping the crew/Mordin alive, I have yet to have an ending where I have dead team mates.
I think the whole "CAMEOOOOOOOS" theory comes from the way characters from Mass Effect transitioned into Mass Effect 2. Ash/Kaidan could die, therefore: cameo. Wrex could die, therefore: cameo. Your entire squad can die in Mass Effect 2, therefore: cameo. It's interesting that people seem to forget that Liara is a character that can't die in the events of Mass Effect, but is still put in a cameo role. The whole "x, y, z character can die so they must be a cameo in future games" theory kind of goes out when we take that into consideration.
And if we examine the context of the story in the first game versus the second game it wouldn't make sense to pigeon-hole the squadmates from Mass Effect 2 into cameo roles considering they play much larger roles in the story than the squadmates from the first game did.
Garrus summarizes what the first game is really all about pretty well when you recruit him: "This is your show Shepard, but I want to take Saren down as much as you do. I'm coming with you." The first game begins with Anderson, Udina and Hackett commenting on how awesome Shepard is, and how "s/he's the only kind of person who can protect the galaxy" - singular, all about Shepard and how capable s/he is. None of the party members from the first game have a huge impact on the story when you think about it. Ash/Kaidan start the whole Prothean visions thing by stepping toward the beacon, Shepard saves them. Tali presents incredibly weak but somehow incriminating evidence of Saren's mustache twirling evilness on Eden Prime (I mean...an audio recording? Really?) and anticlimactically introduces the player to the Reapers. And Liara, despite how much she talks in the comm room, really doesn't tell you much of anything until you visit the second beacon on Virmire where she finds out: Aha, the Conduit is on Ilos! ...And then Ash/Kaidan give the player a potentially "emotionally engaging" choice on Virmire.
I guess some could argue that Wrex and Garrus contributed to the plot in some ways (Wrex with his episode on Virmire and Garrus with his leading the player in the direction of finding Tali--dependent on whether or not the player chose to go the route of Harkin or not), but because both are skippable characters, their impact is lessened in comparison to the other characters (but not by much).
That's it. Shiala and Benezia move the story forward about as much as the squadmates do, but they're just NPCs. Vigil is probably the most important character from the first game if we consider his impact on the story as an expositional dump truck, and he didn't even get a cameo in the second game (WHAT THE HEY). The point is: None of these characters are as crucial to the story as Shepard is (except Vigil, probably). They're just fortunate enough to be along for the ride. The game ends with Shepard making a choice about who should sit on the Council, and ends with Shepard doing a manly strut off screen which then ends with her/him staring blankly off into space with blue or red colors flying around in the background. That tells me that this particular story was building up how cool Shepard was supposed to be and how the squad mates were just...bodies that s/he picked up along the way. This point becomes especially true when Shepard says, "Oh sure, you can come along. I'll take all the help I can get."
Conversely, Shepard *needs* the help of the squad members from Mass Effect 2 in order to be successful.
The second game begins with Miranda commenting on Shepard's accomplishments, but also mentions that s/he's "just one woman/man." This already takes a different tone than the first game and acknowledges that despite Shepard's greatness, s/he can't save the galaxy by her/himself. The fact that the majority of the game focuses around recruiting these specialists and that there are roles specifically designated for each of them near the end of the game (not to mention some of them having important ship upgrades which increase squad survivability) already gives them more plot relevance than any of the characters from the first game. The ending of this game doesn't just have Shepard farting around staring off into oblivion; one of the last things the player sees before the credits starts rolling is Shepard nodding to her/his surviving crew members who are gearing up for something--presumably the incoming Reaper fleet. ...And then we have Shepard doing some blank (but somehow, strangely more ominous
Yes, Shepard is still the protagonist, but it wasn't just his/her show anymore. Shepard was just the ring leader of the Badass Brigade. I'm pretty sure the characters from Mass Effect 2 will come back as squaddies in Mass Effect 3. If not, well...okay, but it'd make less sense to have characters like Liara and Ash/Kaidan come back as squaddies (when they were busy blowing Shepard off with something else obviously more important than the Collector threat during Mass Effect 2's plot) whereas the surviving crew mates who talk about gearing up and getting ready for the Reaper invasion go: "Oh. I can die. CAMEO. BYE SHEPARD. Good luck with that thing from last time that you were talking about. What was it, again? Can't be all that important if I'm not sticking around for it...geez, um. Ah yes, "Reapers." Yeah...have fun!"
That said, I wouldn't mind having Liara and Ash/Kaidan back. I don't want to be stuck with just the two of them, though, and I definitely don't want any new squad mates around for the third one. Surviving crew members for the Mass Effect finale, please.
