Hey guys - quick random question here. If you play as a MShep - how does the whole 'reach and flexibility' conversation pan out? Is it even in there or does Garrus have something else to say instead? Although I am tempted to play once as MShep just to have a bromance with Mr V, I wondered if you guys could tell me.

And sorry if this topic has been covered already - I've missed it somehow.

This.  Garrus is not gay.  I have no problem with putting in same/sex LIs.  In fact, I encourage it, but demanding that Garrus or Tali be gay is the same as me demanding Leliana and Zevran be straight.  I always thought the argument that  "he's an alien, therefore if he is open to femshep romance, he should be open to dudeshep romance too" or "putting our sexual orientations on aliens doesn't make sense" were poor arguments.  Yes, he's an alien, but turians also behave in many human-like ways which is the only thing that makes alien romances possible in ME.  If they had truly "alien" orientations, romance likely wouldn't work at all.  Since we've translated so much that is definitely human into ME aliens, sexual orientation does not seem like that weird of a thing to project.  Gender does matter in attraction.  That's why I'm attracted to Garrus and Thane, but not Tali or Liara.  I'm straight and only attracted to things which are male.  I don't think it's weird at all for the same situation to be present in alien species, especially ones that have recognizably "male" and "female" genders.

Long rant and I don't mean to offend anyone.  I also don't mind sharing an LI (Zevran, Sky, etc.) but ONLY if they were designed to be bi from the beginning.

I know some people will argue that Garrus and Tali were altered to find humans attractive purely for fanservice, but I don't think that that's a valid argument.  For one, I don't think they find humans in general attractive but specifically Shepard.  I think that Shepard sort of epitomizes the potential of his/her gender.  His/her "maleness" or "femaleness" kind of transcends his/her human physiology, and I think it's that coupled with Shep's personality that turns Garrus and Tali's eyes.  It's not just that they admire Shepard....darn it's hard to explain.  It's like they really admire Shepard's spirit only to begin with and then one day they also realize "wow, Shepard is the opposite gender of me and is a stellar example of that gender" and that's when the sexual attraction starts.  Their previous admiration was not sexual, I don't think.  Anyway, maybe that makes no sense, but that's how I interpret it anyway.  I just don't think sexual orientation is something you can determine by flipping a switch.

And yes, I really mean it when I say I hope the same sex crowd gets the LIs they are looking for as well.  I will share Garrus if I must, but if there ever is maleshep/Garrus content, I hope it is well hidden so I can pretend it's not there to maintain my suspension of disbelief.

It gets to the point where Garrus comments how they had a tie breaker later on, and that he had reach but she had flexibility.

Then it ends right there, with Shepard laughing a bit while shaking his head amusingly.

* Bullets don't hit Garrus Vakarian, but Garrus Vakarian sometimes hits bullets.

* Harbinger tries to intimidate Shepard because he knows that nobody can intimidate Garrus Vakarian.


He also has to maintain concealed weapon licenses in all Citadel space systems in order to legally wear clothes.  

What a hassle.

He just tells you the story and you get the same smile/headshake as with femshep.  It's just presented as guys recounting their conquests but the actual content isn't different.  By the by, a dudeshep/Tali playthrough is SO worth it.  She's adorable.

So....today I did those calibrations I spoke of earlier this week...and sure enough, the tech guy we sent for had to reconfigure the computer. I started laughing like a nut when I saw this:

Yeah, I don't like non-canon stuff either. But I got quite a few fic requests (yes, I take requests) for MShepxGarrus for some reason I yet have to figure out., so I decided to do it and just have the end result be as impossibly weird as I can make it. Or maybe I'll just leave it be.

Oh well,  I just got a FemShepxGarrus "What happened before passing throught the Omega 4 relay?" serious fic request (yes, someone actually trusted me with writing a SERIOUS fic). Might as well work on that. I'll decide what to do with my crackfics later. Suggestions are welcome.

Yeah, it was an *awesome*, hilarious line. His exchange with maleshep after recruitment is a total "best bros" moment.

Yep, he does.  It's funny how the same content looks bromancy with maleshep and flirty for femshep.  I also think that that line is Bioware poking fun at the Garrusophiles in the fandom.  I chuckled.

In about 40 minutes... I think I saw him dance five times. :) I just left the game like that and moved the camera around every now and then so the screen wouldn't get dark.



I'll definitely pay more attention to Li's expressions this time around. I'm going to play NG+ with my male Shepard right after I finish Awakenings (almost done, just the end mission left). By the way, I was considering playing through ME1 again with my main FemShep, and I was wondering if there's a different bonus for NG+ in ME2 as compared to ME1. I haven't tried either yet.



@Ragabul the Ontarah: I agree. Most of the aliens in Mass Effect have obvious male or female appearances, and at least in the case of my Shepards, it makes the same difference it would with humans. A female Shepard who wouldn't be interested in human females probably wouldn't be interested in the asari because they still look female. It's the same reason that my Shepard who will romance Tali isn't interested in male quarians as well... because Tali looks female, and male quarians don't. xD Nothing against the romance options that are available for both - I have Wardens for the Zevran and Leliana romances (actually, my first Warden with a romance went for Zevran).

Well, we don't actually have definitive canon on the subject. At no point in the games does Garrus or Tali or anyone else stand up and say "I am 100% heterosexual and I have no romantic or sexual interest in the same gender of any race." They have relationships with the opposite gender, yes, but that's doesn't mean they can never have attraction to their own gender. And even then, it's still entirely possible that their interests are mostly heterosexual, with a few 'exceptions' (ie, Shepard)--and don't forget that bisexuality exists! Hell, the whole F!Shep/Garrus romance has an underlying 'I care about you so much that I don't care if I'm acting out of my usual comfort zone' tone (sounds familiar).

And I am gonna take the 'why should western human sexuality perfectly map onto aliens?' line of reasoning, and not just to troll Ragabul. Human sexuality and who is/isn't acceptable to be attracted to varies wildly based on neighborhood, let alone continent or culture. Why should aliens have the same views on sexuality that some average guy down the street does? It just doesn't make sense. I know that we have to be able to project some human traits on them to have relatability, but it's going too far to give them the sexual mores of modern suburban America. If you want that, just romance a human.
