I once did an intentionally bad cracky fanfic about FemShep and Garrus getting hitched, just to see how far I could push obvious Did Not Do The Research and OOC-ness before I "went too far".
In the end, I managed to do about 8 chapters before I got a review that wasn't "good". And even then it was just someone saying that Shepard, MY Shepard, was OOC.
Oh, great times.
I actually started a fic, but after reading some of the others, I got scared away. I don't even like to entertain the possibility that some of my stuff might get that over the top. I generally have an innate suspicion of fanfic and in fact Garrus fanfic is the first I have really read with any depth or consistency. I had never even considered writing it before either. I love to write, but it's usually my own stuff. Some of the "for the hell of it" crackfic is pretty fun, but most of the serious stuff is...scary. It can be summed up with two phrases: "self insertion" and "takes itself WAY too seriously."
Makes you wonder if there is some little tribe of REALLY crazy fangirls on the internet somewhere that are underground. I thought we were nuts, but just look through fanfiction.net some afternoon and you will realize we don't have ANYTHING on some people.
I see what you mean. Yeah, some fanfics are incredibly disturbing.
My fics just about never take themselves seriously. At all. But that's what makes them incredibly fun to write. For example,
Fail for the Lost has characters constantly complaining about how the story sucks, some really creepy pairings (FemShepxGarrusxSarenxMordin love quadrangle, AndersonxTurian Councilor, JacobxMale Elcor, MirandaxNiftu Cal), and a very beige-prose way of story telling (I really can't write purple prose), and on top of that I'm planning a lot of jokes about fanfiction in general.
Here's an excerpt, Shepard's last thoughts before she dies when the Normandy gets blown up:
The cockpit started blowing up around Shepard, seperating her from
Joker and ripping open her oxygen tank.
'Can't die now, haven't done it with a turian yet. Can't die now, haven't done it with a turianyet.' was all she could think before being blown into the endless void of space. Her feelings numbed and her body went limp.
Two
seconds later, Commander Jane Shepard was dead.
And believe me, that fic is about the most serious fic I've ever worked on.
So...

EDIT: Collider, there's no way your fanfiction can be as bad as mine. Please, post it! I'm curious!
