I know.  I find the whole translators thing fascinating as well.  I don't think turians can pronounce plosives at all with the way their mouths are shaped.  That makes me wonder about guys like Septimus that have a "P" in their name.  It wouldn't surprise me if in actuality a lot of turian names cannot be pronounced by a human.  Think about Li on Noveria.  Maybe "Septimus" is just the closest approximation that a human can manage and then the translators keep you from mangling it as you speak.  I'd like to here Garrus say "Shepard" with no translator.  I bet it's probably really bizarre sounding and hilarious.

Actually, I suspect that the translators spit out many Turian names in Latin.  As in, they take the meaning of a name and express that  meaning in Latin.  Just as how many human names have their roots in other languages not necessarily spoken by the people bearing the names.  My own name translates in Hebrew as "bitter rebel."

"Septimus" translates as "seventh son."

"Octa," the child found alive on Taetrus, is "eighth."

"Garrus" Is, I swear, linguistically related to the word "garrison."

I'm not sure about Pallin, Chellick or Kuril but I'm not a Latin scholar myself.

Actually, the codex points out that there are devices that most everyone uses that translate languages. Shepard, when talking to Thane, says that her translator must have slipped when he calls her "Siha".... I mean, not all species talk the same way... as in like... the Hanar use light in the communication. Some might not be able to speak in a way humans or similar beings can understand. The use of mechanical translators makes the most sense... just have to calibrate them for each new species. (Reminds me of the Chanar books...)

Yea, this is what I assumed was going on too.  Thanks for reminding me of that Thane bit.  I had forgotten about it.  Anyway, that's what makes me wonder what Garrus would sound like without the translator. I bet it would be extremely alien, not just like hearing a foreign language but something even wilder than that.

Yup, all races have a diffrent language, when a new race is added to Citidal space, they are added to something. Forget the codex. Beleive it was in ME.

I took two years of Latin and yes most tuiran names are literally Latin names.  "Invictus"  "Septimus" and the names generally follow the rules of Latin gender as well.  Masculine names and words often end with "us" and feminine names usually end with "a"  But then they have really exotic ones that don't appear to have anything to do with Latin like Li, Chellick, and Pallin.  Makes me wonder if the translators try to create some approximation that "sounds" like the turian equivalent or if they pick some word that means something close to the same thing.

Or the real answer is just that Bioware loosely based the turians on the Romans and so they used Roman names to give turian names a general flavor.  I doubt there's any deeper meaning than that, but speculation is fun.

I wanted to respond to this yesterday, and tell you all about the time I lost my keys and found them 6 days later in the oven, but this crappy Trojan or whatever my computer has has been totally wreaking havoc with...well, everything.  I'm about to get a sledgehammer.  Seriously, don't make me laugh, my internet connection is barely holding together as it is. So in case this doesn't let me say anything else...GARRUS!!!! Posted Image

If I hadn't been able to find the controller for six days... I probably would have read through Revelation, Ascension, part of the Mass Effect Wiki, and spent a lot more time reading the Garrus thread. xD

I lost a computer to viruses too. It was beyond repair. D: This is why I won't connect my Xbox to the internet to get any DLC. If there's a way to send viruses into game systems, the internet will probably find one. Although, on the subject of mods, I did see a thread in the Mass Effect General Discussion forum about modding the Xbox version, I think you still need to use the PC to access those files. I wouldn't attempt it, since I'd probably just break the game. I might end up getting a gaming PC at some point... but not in the near future.

Needn't worry about your Xbox getting viruses. Microsoft isn't going to send you any.

I saw this too and was tempted to try it.  If I wreck a few savegames it's no big deal because I have about half a hundred, but trashing the system or my harddrive....not so fun.

I tend to worry about those things... bad luck with computers, and then there's all the stories I read about Xbox failures. Luckily, mine hasn't had any problems. I have better luck with game systems.

Anyway, I'll just wait a year or two, try to learn more about computers, and then I can have DLC and mods at the same time. xD

@Ragabul the Ontarah: I would be likely to mess up something and then not be able to fix it. I read something, either in that thread or another one, about accidentally replacing Shepard's face textures for hair textures. o_o; So many mods look cool though - I've even seen TIM's eyes on Shepard, and glowing eyes, and eyes that almost looked turian-style.

Translation glitches, modding, good and bad fanfic, world domination, and of course, Garrus.

Hiya Clan V. Just catching up with the thread - you guys have been BUSY...I love it.. I have to say that we have many clever people posting here but, Raga, your insights into topics are always a fantastic read - articulate and thought provoking!:D:wizard:

Just wondering if anyone has seen today's Daily from Cerberus?:
Players of the extranet game “Galaxy of Fantasy” held a virtual march
supporting the survivors of the Vallum Blast. Over one million players
attended in the virtual space of Radiatum Park, where an online kiosk
set up by the game’s developers allowed them to donate to the victims of
the blast. “The players have been incredible,” says community manager
Enrique Schofgee. “The entire basis for the game is turian mythology.
To see turians under attack like this in real life strikes a chord in
our players to do something.” Prominent player Alila Minaro agrees. “We
spend hundreds of hours defending and maintaining this world immersed
in turian culture
. You can’t do that and not have a little turian
public spirit rub off on you.”

I vote for "Galaxy of Fantasy" as next Mass Effect expansion

Oh, and (as always) Garrus!

Talking of modding - that great new Garrus look a few pages back - can anyone tell me how/where to go for instructions on how to mod it on a pc. I tried but had google fail as I wasn't entirely sure what I was searching for. I would love Garrus to have that outfit!

If they made a Galaxy of Fantasy MMO, I'd probably buy it - even though I have no actual interest in MMO's. I just love the thought of a game based around turian mythology.

The outfit requires texmod. Apart from that, I have no idea - the only game I've ever modded was Oblivion.

I was under the impression you could leave a comment, but it had to be in-character to the Mass Effect universe and it had to be moderated first.

I'd roleplay an Elcor chef.

I just thought of something really weird and pretty off-topic. If you have no ME1 LI (no picture on desk in ME2) and you don't pursue a ME2 LI, what does Shep do pre-Omega 4? No scene at all I expect.

Cry into his/her pillow

I've heard that Shep does nothing, there's no scene.

I like to think my Shepard would coax various squadmates into one final game of Skyllian Five.

Have you guys ever waited to give the engineers the new parts until after you recruit Tali?  If you do she will join in on the poker game and it's pretty funny.  "I thought I had a good poker face."  If you already knew, sorry, but I just recently figured that out.

Also has anyone got video or screenshots of femshep picking the "I don't want to screw up our friendship" options in the conversations before the romance scene. The one in the looping "I want to try it with you" dialog and the conversation before that? I've never seen those.

Actually, I haven't seen that particular one, but I did see the one where Shepard says they should be friends during the romance scene. That was heartbreaking to watch. I don't recommend it, it is bad for your health.

Yea, most of the other rejection scenes just make the LI look like they have wounded pride.  The two that really stick a knife in me are Thane and Garrus because I think it's obvious that they are both sincerely hurt, but they don't take it out on you or act offended.  The others get huffy.  Garrus and Thane act like you just sapped all the energy and happy out of them.  :crying:   Haven't ever seen a Tali rejection scene, but it wouldn't surprise me if she acted like that as well.  Aliens FTW, but maybe that's just me.
