Ok, seeing all the talk about accidental ME1 romances, I want to offer a bit of help. Here is a method to keep your ME1 Shepard single while maintaining a friendly relationship with all 3 LIs (ie. not having to turn them down during the lockdown scene) AND getting all Codex entries from them, so you don't lose out on EXP:
1. For Kaidan and Ashley, their
first convo (the post-Eden Prime chat and the Citadel chat don't count) will have an option which turns the romance off for good.
-Ashley: tell her that she's out of line when she comments that it might not be a good idea to allow the alien crewmembers full access to the ship. It's a single middle-left option on the wheel. Shepard will ask her if she always second-guesses her superiors. Yes, it's a little harsh, but a Shepard who isn't romancing her (ie. has no reason to be conciliatory with her) would realistically remind her of her place in a situation like that, because, well, she
is out of line. You'll have the same convos with her as a FemShep would from then on, and interrupting her call with her sister will have the sister commenting that Kaidan is cute, rather than MaleShep. She'll also be calling you "Commander" rather than "skipper" at the end of her convos.
-Kaidan: definitely harsher than Ashley, but still the best option to let him down easy. In his first convo, he'll talk about his past for a bit, and then he'll say something along the lines of "sorry if I'm rambling". Pick the bottom-right option to have Shepard tell him that she "gave up waiting for the good part". Kaidan will apologize and never hit on her again. You'll have the same conversations with him as a MaleShep would from then on. He'll also be ending convos with "Commander" rather than "I'd like that".
2. Liara is a bit of a trap. Her turn-down is completely unambiguous, but getting to it is counterintuitive. And the problem is, you HAVE to turn her down to be completely safe: I've heard some people complaining about romancing her even though they only spoke to her once. So during your first convo with her, pick personal topics: she'll get embarrassed about studying you. Now this already makes it obvious that she's interested: I can understand why people wouldn't want to bring up personal topics after that. However, you HAVE to pick personal topics again for your
second convo with her. She'll confirm her interest, and ask if there's something between you and Kaidan/Ashley. If you're not romancing them, pick the middle-right option to say that they're just friends. Liara will then ask if there's something between you and her: again, pick the middle-right option to have Shepard say "I'm not interested in you in that way". She'll be embarrassed again, but you can speak to her safely after that. She'll also be calling you "Commander" rather than "Shepard".
And I'm almost 100% certain that this is why the ME2 romances have Shepard acting like the proverbial ton o' bricks. It's definitely easier to navigate the ME2 romances, since they're almost entirely up to Shepard. Although I'd say Jacob and Jack are the exception. On my current MaleShep playthrough, I locked in Tali's romance, and, while speaking to Jack, turned down the casual sex with the middle-right option (ie. simply saying I wasn't looking for that), and later said I didn't have feelings for her either. However, the next convo I had with her was the "her or me" about Tali, which had me a bit confused. I reloaded, because I didn't want to be an ass, and have been avoiding her since. Guess it's impossible for a MaleShep to be simply friendly with Jack. While I understand why (she's not emotionally functional enough to deal with the middle-ground between "I wanna bang you and dump you" and "you are the love of my life"), I still think it's a bit of a shame. At least, while she wasn't buddy-buddy with FemShep, you could still have a grudging camaraderie with her.
As for Jacob, well, we all know by now that FemShep mysteriously transforms into a horny teenager as soon as she opens her mouth in front of him. Heck, even simply picking the "personal topics" option sounds like she's saying "hey there, stud". So while you may not even be turning the romance on, you might legitimately have doubts. By comparison, Miranda's, Thane's and Garrus' romance triggers are crystal clear and completely avoidable without detrimental consequences.
Concerning Kaidan as a romance choice: I didn't mind him. He was sweet enough, and I didn't think he was all that boring. But I've heard people say that BioWare might have been trying too hard to make him attractive: he's good-looking, dutiful, respectful, sensitive and kind, all the while having a tragic past and a 'damaged goods' aspect. However, he's very well-adjusted and even has a mildly flirty side (his "I'm looking forward to shore leave" comment made me giggle, I must admit). He could almost have a neon sign saying "I'm what every woman wants" above his head. But that's precisely what ends up being detrimental to him: he's almost too good to be true.
And one last thing: turians definitely have other eye-colours than green and blue. There's Lorik, whose eyes were yellow. And don't Li and Warden Kuril have black eyes? (or something very close to black)
