I see Garrus as acting like Zoe did in Serenity. After loosing someone he loves dearly, he would be very reckless and pissed. He would go into a fight not caring if he made it out alive or not.
That reminds me of someone else. If anyone played Splinter Cell Double Agent they'll remember how Sam Fisher stopped caring whether he lived or died and started getting into fights and taking dangerous assignments. The only difference is that this partcular Splinter Cell game sucked unlike Serenity.
Garrus did do this although not as disorganized. He went to Omega and started hunting mercenaries and criminals. I bet he probably didn't care whether he lived or died as long as he changed Omega. I bet he didn't care while holding his base. If you ask me he was probably trying to gun down as many mercenaries as he could. However that changed when he saw Shepard was alive. It's all speculation though, however I'm pretty sure that he knew they were coming for him. Why not escape? Maybe it could have been his wish to give his teamates a proper funeral or like I said the idea of him not caring and just wanting to gun down as many mercs as possible.
