I think Garrus was just more reserved in ME1. In ME2 he was much less reserved, so he stood out more. Either way he's awesome, so yea.

He was very reserved in ME2 as well. He only lost his cool in some situations where it was quite understandable, like Shepard flirting with him. Garrus = cool.

I like to think he gew much more after Shepard died, mentally at least. (Even though I still think he's taller in the second game. :|)

He went and did things his way, got more action than when he was at c-sec and also went through the whole betrayal schtick. That's bound to mold a person a bit.

In ME1 he's more of a soldier, taking orders looking to Shepard for advice. Then in ME2 he grows a backbone so to say, and becomes more independent and confident.

I've put some reflection on it, and while it doesn't change that he was certainly less prominent personality-wise in ME1, I can sort of put reasoning to it.

Garrus appears, though I hesitate to use the word, a little confused in ME1. He's been with C-Sec for years (I assume, given he has direct meetings with the Executor and is handed cases like Saren) and has been in the "culture", so to speak, for years before that thanks to his father's enrollment (go on, ask a cop's kid if he's completely isolated from police life). The events of the first game (Armistice Day foul-ups aside) could be assumed to cover no more than two weeks - he's just thrown his whole life into chaos to follow Shepard because he believes in what she's (using FemShep assumptions because, let's face it) doing. He hasn't even told his father he quit yet - he's a bit of a mess, internally, I'll bet. He knows they're doing the right thing, but it goes against everything his father and his culture encourage. You bond in the way only soldiers can, but he's still sort of getting his feet under him as Garrus Vakarian, freelance soldier, a fact that's only heightened by the mentor-student relationship - human initiative is sort of his "model".

And then you go and die on him. That's a moment that hardens any man, human or turian. But he's going to take Shepard's example and do something good with it, something in the interest of justice where no-one else can - Omega, where he can strike at the heart of three mercenary bands who more closely approximate organized crime than private armies. He's going to lead his team to do the things that need to be done. He's going to keep your memory alive, even just for him, with every vorcha shot down, every arms shipment stolen out from under its handlers. He develops the ME2 confidence because he must.

He's got a fantastic arc when you can step back and look at the whole thing, but it starts on a very subdued note.

Ape, that was a beautiful description and you hit the nail right on the head.

Kelly sort of annoys me about her intensity sometimes, along with Liara... But I can't help but like her when she tells Shepard her and Garrus would be cute together. All the attracted to alien talks are kind of enjoyable.

Another thing, assistant, went into vorcha teritor... No, I recall someone saying that when Garrus sits down on the stairs that it looks like he said: "I'll just be back here thinking about cupcakes."

You're too kind, really. I just sort of dashed it off as I was thinking about it. But then, Garrus' story is the kind I tend to enjoy.

I am looking forward to playing through the romance. You folks are infections with your Garrus-love.

I realize I might be poking a hornet's nest or rehashing something buried in the 960-odd pages of this thread, so let me preface this by saying I am indeed a convert to Garrus...

...was I the only person who found it hard to care much about him the first time? I don't know, Mako-side Garrus always seemed a little...bland? Timid? It's hard to say. You can make up as many reasons as you like in hindsight, but until I got to see him for the rest of the game I wasn't that excited to learn it was him on Omega. ME2 Garrus is wicked, of course, and kudos to the writers that really made him 'pop' this time, but I just couldn't get into it in ME1. Your thoughts?

As for Omega, I wasn't expecting it to be Garrus until hearing from Garm that Archangel = Turian. That's what I get for not paying attention to the dossier and trailers/previews for the game I guess <.<. I was actually excited that Garrus = Archangel. Finally Shepard gets someone in his/her party that's actually trustworthy AND a friend (err and Tali too...later...w/e).

That's when I put the pieces together, too.  I had heard that Garrus was going to be in the game (yaaay!), and was puzzled when I looked at all the dossiers I was given and he wasn't listed on them.  Then I heard Archangel was a turian and a little light bulb went on over my head.  I went and re-read the dossier (noted sniper, right; Omni-Tool expert, ok...AHA!  Then I felt dumb I hadn't figured it out sooner. LOL)  But it was still a thrill to see when he took off his helmet. Posted Image

And Christmas Ape, I don't think anyone is going to get upset if you express your opinion about ME1 Garrus.  We don't get bent out of shape easily in this thread.  Having said that, I liked both Garri. Posted Image  However, the character into which they have molded him in ME2 is so unbelievably cool that I worry a bit about what they'll do in ME3.  I mean, he's at a perfect level of badassery right now, such that if they turned it up any more, it'd be too much.  I hope they don't make him look silly or something.  But yeah, he was definitely more reserved in ME1.

I just played through the quarantine zone with Garrus for the first time, at first I felt kind of bad and had a pre-save just in case. But the part when Mordin randomly heals him is worth it. I should have captured a screenshot of it. Garrus is just sort of "wtf". Then he gives a speech about how Cerberus isn't all bad and how aliens/humans have to work together.

Maybe you guys have already done it, but I found it pretty interesting and new in the end.

It's the only reason I take him with me in Mordin's recruitment. After all, we just saved his life, why would we risk it to a plague?

How are all the Garrus fans doing?

Just remembered that I missed the Oculus fight in my last batch of suicide mission pictures.

So here they are. With Shepard going into battle wearing a dress.

I don't know how that happened.

Love Garrus' expression on this one. He's kind of like "...is she really wearing THAT for the mission?"

What was especially weird about the entire thing was that it wasn't the casual outfit Shepard had worn during the romance scene with Garrus just before the Oculus fight.

Posted Image

She wore that one.

And then she suddenly showed up to the conversation with TIM in this dress:

I lol'd.

The scary thing is for that Old West feel...they pretty much got everyone dead-on.

I can just see femShep as the sheriff. Posted Image

Yeah, well, you can't go to battle with your belly exposed of course. It would distract Garrus too much.

Garrus is definitely a brittish gentleman (with a dash of jerk): "I say, the sherrif in this town are just obsessed by the law! Like that cattle collector gang over at Omega Creek are going to play things nice. Not like the good old days of Shepard, bless his/her spirit. We left the book of the law with pastor Thane and rode off to smoke those dreadfull gethboys out of their hidey hole over at the old Prothean Ranch. Good times...Good times..."

I've been playing Red Dead (Xbox 360 - anyone wanna posse up?), and it's been hard because I keep on wanting to play ME1 *and* ME2 instead:P ... How awesome would it be if Red Dead came out for PC and we could TexMod in our beloved Mass Effect buddies?
