* At the end I get you out of there while you're spilling your guts all over the floor and dying right there.

And I still have to do a mission to "secure your loyalty??????"

Tecnically its to help him not be distracted for the mission, Tali to. If your thinking about how you might be exiled and if your dad is okay you probably would not be as focused

It's because he's distracted over the guy who betrayed him, and his heart isn't entirely in the mission until that's been dealt with.

In fairness, the "loyalty" missions are just what Bioware and we, the fans, refer to as the NPCs side-quests. Garrus probably wouldn't phrase it as "hey, help me to kill Sidonis to secure my loyalty!" but rather, he needs your help, and if you give it, he is free to concentrate 100% on the mission, and because of your help is willing to follow wherever you lead.

LOYALTY is a bit wrong word in some cases, like Garrus one. He is your friend and willing to go through hell without a second throught (same thing with Tali), but more correct choice of words would be FOCUSED I believe.

Lets face it, he has been gone through hell, face mutilated for the rest of his life possibly, and worst of all gotten backstabbed, his whole squad massacred by this and he blames himself for this cuz he thinks he was careless, and holds a cold hate towards Sidonis who started this all. By doing his loyalty mission this matter no longer bothers him so much so he can put all of his focus on the mission instead of harboring his guilt and hatred.

As others have said, 'loyalty' is a blanket term, because 'focus' doesn't sound as buzzworthy.
