So from what I've read it seems BioWare is keeping track of who the most popular characters are via the internet, like who you use the most etc because although everyone will have at least an appearance (if they survived), not every character will be coming back. Here is your ME2 squad and the most prominent way to remove them from being an ME3 squaddie... thoughts?

Miranda               Cerberus - could be a problem (best I can think of)
Jacob                     Cerberus - could be a problem (best I can think of)
Thane                        He's dying, with just months to live
Tali                       They wouldn't kill her, but she is up to an admiral, that's BioWare's out for her
Grunt                     He's supposed to return to Tuchanka after the mission and help his people
Samara                   She is a Justicar, she wants to clean up Omega
Mordin                   He is over a decade older than the Salarian life expectancy, his old age could easily get him
Jack                     Her biotic powers have caused a neurological degenerative disorder (true story) she too is dying
Garrus                   He got messed up pretty bad on Omega - but I think he is a safe bet for ME3 (the safest)
Legion                   I think BioWare hopes for him to be in ME3, there is a lot left to learn about him, but he's a geth so...
Zaheed                 Fun character, but shallowest, only one you can't build a friendship with on the ship
Kasumi              Remains to be seen... not out yet as of this post

So as you can see, each character was set up to not be around in 3, but could easily be included without much problem (I am talking about as a squaddie - obviously almost everyone will make a cameo at the least)

In case your curious... character I think make the cut: Miranda, Tali, Garrus, Grunt, and Legion... I think that will be it - hopefully I am wrong

I care but I want them. Legion, Garrus, Thane, Tali, Miranda, Mordin and Grunt. I can't bare to think of them being cameo's in ME3. Its sooo sad. XD

I don't see Thane and Mordin making it... they won't bring everyone back, and those two are the easiest to write off... Mordin is over 50... Salarians rarely live past 40

I honestly don't think they are going to disband your team again. Some might leave due to reasons stated such as Grunt being asked to return to his home planet. But ME2 was about building a team, if they got rid of it in ME3 then ME2 would have absolutely no point.

Tali's 24. Little young to be an admiral. Especially since she states that she wants to be on the normandy, not with the fleet, in me2.

I don't get this. The point of ME 2 was to build a team to stop the Collectors from abducting human colonies. Shep succeeds at that (even if he doesn't survive). ME 3 will have a new story, and likely new or mostly new squad-mates.

I kinda would like to see the majority come back as squadmates, but I doubt that will happen.

Given Tali and Garrus' fanbases, its likely they'll return, but I still think (but hope not) they will be only playing bit roles, like wrex.

I am referring to who will be potential squad mates, and BioWare has said they are keeping track of how popular characters are in game, and I just feel they will move some ME2 squad members to make room for new ones... and possibly ME1 members who didn't make the cut for 2 (because BioWare wanted to ensure Ashley/Kaidan and Liara didn't die)

Here is how, and the why, for dead characters and whatnot.

The most popular characters will return as squadmates, but will likely not hold roles that cannot be interchangeable.

This is what I believe casey hudson meant by keeping the ME LI's alive through ME2, guaranteed.

Those specific characters, I think, Bioware want to have CHARACTER SPECIFIC ROLES.

As
in, they MUST bein the plot, without doubt. This makes sense for
kaidan/ashley, as they are BOTH marines of relatively high ranking, and as such I believe their personal history with Shepard would make a generic stand-in impossible, and
ESPECIALLY makes sense for Liara as she is the only guaranteed survivor, and has her own separately written story-arch.

Favorites
like Tali, Garrus, Thane, etc, i believe will be made available as
squadmates and continued LI's, but will not have dialogue or cutscenes
that are crucial to the main plot. They will most likely be OPTIONAL
squaddies, based on if they lived or died.

Tl;Dr

Liara
and Kaidan/Ashley are reserved for plot specific roles that do not
allow for generic character if they are dead, thus why they were
"immunized" for ME2.

ME2 characters and LI's, while present and
with their own stories, etc, will not be crucial to the plot, and will
likely be interchangeable. Which characters are brought back will be
determined by fan response and who lived in people's save games,
respectively.

People always say Casey Hudson lies with these statements but he doesn't....you're just interpreting it differently.

If they dont keep all the squad members I'll be ticked.

I want my decisions to mean something for once. I didn't save everyone to have them be npcs just saying.

Yes, I agree with you. You built a team to stop the Collectors but surely your crew would recognize that the threat goes beyond that. As I said, I expect some to leave because they have allready stated they have other priorities once the mission is over but I think if they wrote away the whole team than most of what you have done in ME2 would be without purpose.

Edit: Rereading that I guess I didn't fully express my thoughts. I am not trying to say that the collectors were not a threat. I agree with that and I realize that our team was built in this game to combat them as they were the primary target this game. I guess what I am saying is I would feel robbed if my team just said "That was fun." then up and left Shepard. I believe they had to build trust and a close relationship with him. After all they were supposed to be going into a mission in which their chances of survival were slim.

The ultimate goal is to stop the collectors but the story of ME2 mainly revolves around the characters is what I am trying to say.

Everyone in your crew knows the reapers are coming. Something tells me they aren't going to just get up and leave

Samara, Thane, Mordin, Jack, and Zaeed are likely to be axed. Miranda/Jacob are about at 60% survival rating. Grunt's around 45%, Garrus is 80%, Tali is 75%, and Legion is 50%.

I would expect something along those lines. I doubt very many if any of the former crews will be actual squad mates.

I agree that I hope the ones I want come back.  But on the same vein of "I want my decisions to mean something..." I think the characters that make sense should remain.

I would fully expect Zaeed, Samara and Jack to leave after my Shep delt with the Collector threat.  Why?  Because of my Renegade ways.  On the same vein, I'd expect Grunt and Garrus to stick around because of the decisions I've made.

Tali/Legion and Jacob/Miranda, again,  I think should depend on the decisions you made.  Though honestly, I hope Tali stays, even though I asked the quarians not to go to war.  I'm going to need those armies damn it.

Jacob/Miranda I have doubts because... well, I didn't really trust them... and told TIM to F off.  So yea.

But I do think K has a good point.  I just hope that in the end, the story makes satisfying sense.  Otherwise, I'll be ticked
