I think the majority of people go with what they feel best represents them in the environment they're in. Most times a person is going to label themselves based on their career. If they're in a public place around strangers and the conversation turns to personal details, they tend to mention what job title or a career broadly.
If they are among acquaintances at a party and the topic of hobbies comes up, then they may identify as gamers if that crowd doesn't seem too judgmental. Or they may enjoy one of their other hobbies more. Maybe they prefer to be known as surfers, rock climbers, dancers, writers, or whatever else they spend most of their spare time doing. Sometimes, their career and hobbies overlap, so the answer never changes.
Yet other times, the conversation might go in a direction that causes a person to identify with a particular political party, religious belief, race, or sexual preference. No one identifies as any one thing all the time unless they feel it's a defining personal characteristic.
Personally, I would never identify in public as a gamer. But then I wouldn't identify as anything else either. I don't think the sum of all my personality and beliefs can be summed up with any one grouping of people. Anyway, this is only tangentially related to this ongoing conversation, but there are my two cents. ~Shrugs~
