I've read people talking about how to reduce Sheppard back to a low level for ME3 and had an idea of my own. I thought I'd share and get people's opinion.

Could start off with a tutorial level with you as a fully powered character of whatever class you are. This lets you get used to the powers available. However, in the first major event, the effects of the Lazarus Project are reversed. This could be done in one of two ways.

1) Some type of weapon pulse.
2) Natural progression of the Lazarus Project (starts to reverse over time)

This weakens you and almost kills you again. This also lets you start on a medbay bed again. ME1 after beacon. ME2 waking up too soon. You start off finding a cure which then allows you to level up again.

Sounds plausible. It would have to be fixed up a lot, but similar idea has been used in a bunch of other games. So it isn't something unheard of.

But it does need some work on it.

You know, I honestly would be willing to accept it as an artifact of gameplay and just ignore any explanation of it. I didn't need that explanation at the beginning of ME2 and I won't need it for ME3.

Shepard is never introduced to other characters in the game as class and level, so I don't see why it would need an in-game explanation.

I don't think it's going to happen though. The level cap in ME1 was 60, in ME2 it's 30 and there's one game left. It's pretty easy to see where they're going with that.

This.

Though I think by this point it clearly is an artifact of gameplay. Thinking levels mean anything in terms of the story is nonsensical when enemies scale.

I don't need an explanation. I did hear, though, that the lower level-cap in ME 2 has something to do with importing into ME 3.

I think they'll either start you off as you were at the end of ME2 and just raise the level cap to 60, or they'll return to the 'entering in corrupt database' explanation from ME1.

That's what was done in God of War 2. Start out as a god, get the weapon cursed by Zeus, turn back to a low level.

The devs for ME3 may just keep you at the level you import and raise the cap, similar to WoW.

this. no need to reuse a plot device that was never even necessary. there are other serious challenges to my suspension of disbelief in the game. see:gasmasks and no armor.
