I had been planning on getting the AR, but the more I think about it I think the sniper rifle would be a better choice. What do you suggest for a sentinel?

I'm planning to grab a shottie when I get around to playing as sentinel. I want to abuse tech armor to rush down foes and the shotgun will let me take them down fast once I get in close.

I prefer the AR. The Vindicator is good at long, medium, and close range. Fits the Sentinel's versatile gameplay quite well. The class also shores up the Vindicator's only weakness: low ammo

if you're playing a jack of all trades Sentinel, and not an assault sentinel, I recommend the AR for the vindicator. It's a handy weapon to complement an already meaty list of skills... If you're going Assault, Shotgun all the way.

Shotgun or AR. Sniper doesn't fit the sentinels gameplay.

For me Sniper works. But the Vindicator works fine too. It's personal taste. Shotgun got interesting since the Eviscerator is available.

AR hands down for sentinel, vindicator preferably. Your the most well rounded class in every way except a weapon.

I got a sniper though, cuz I like snipers.

I took the Shotgun. Guardian + Assault Armor + Shotgun = unstoppable

I like how shotty was considered crap for such a long time and now we're all vanguards with claymores or Sentinels with some random shotgun.

Power Armor + Warp + Overload = No ammo wasted and still unstoppable.

Probably because there was no Eviscerator back then. That shotty was practically made for other classes.

Now that the Evi has been added shotgun may not be a bad choice, but I would not suggest using a Scimitar or Katana. You will likely miss half of your pellets even if you think you are pretty close. Vindicator is a nice choice because its accurate while moving so you don't have to plant yourself to do damage like you would with an SMG.

If you don't think the Vindicator is good at close range heres a video:

Well I was thinking sniper to cover my lack of long range attacks, and by not taking the AR I don't make the SMG obsolete. If I have the AR why would I ever use and SMG? Or would I still find myself making use of it?

I picked a shotgun

.

Can't say it is the better choice cause I finished the game only once with a Sentinel. But it worked pretty well.

Sentinel w/SR will work but on 3 conditions.

1. if your playstyle is support, debuff and let teammates finish off enemies rather than assault sentinel like some of the others have suggested

2. You like or don't mind using SMGs as your main gun. If you absolutely despise SMGs and heavy pistols then take the AR which if you do you'll be using 90% of the time. Otherwise it'll be 70% SMGs 30% SR.

3. you must be a good (or at least decent) shot. No fancy damage multiplier/time slowdown tricks for sentinels. You're gonna have to earn those headshots if your taking the SR.

If you use Vindicators then you'd find plenty of use for the SMG. The Vindicator is a brillaint weapon at long and medium ranges, but at short range it sucks diseased donkey balls.

Another reasong for having the AR is the SMG *beep* vs armour.

Having an AR is pretty flexible. Avenger for close work or Vindicator for ranged snap-shots.

Eviserator made the Katana & Scimitar obsolete - my new Vanguard is currently de-braining Collectors on Horizon.

The Tempest with Inferno Ammo seems to handle armour just fine.

I still personally prefer the Scimitar. The Evis is nice and all but it's rate of fire is irritating.

I had the same question in mind, but got to the decision that the AR is best for the sentinel.

Combined with the AP-Ammo it does everything the skills of the sentinel do.

Perfect to keep damaging enemies before the powers have reloaded.

Get the Capacitor-Plating for the chest and you'll have plenty of opportunities to shoot them.

I chose a Sniper rifle because i feel like the SMG is more than good enough as a main focus weapon, especially since i seemed to do a lot of damage with my abilities and the SMG, and sniper added the much desired long range weapon for me.

But to be fair, i then played through my next game as an infiltrator.

I like my Sentinel to use lots of biotics/tech, and have trouble aiming them with a sniper rifle equipped. Zoom in to launch a power, and I often find myself doing sniper zoom, which is clunky when all I really want to do is throw/warp/reave someone in medium range. So, I prefer AR.

Beg to differ; playing IFF Reaper on Insanity where you try to fend off waves of Armoured Husks has made me realise how much weaker the Tempest is against armour at any range past knife.

Technically, the Tempest have a higher raw DPS than the Avenger, but the Tempest doesn't have any bonus vs armour.  The Avenger starts with +25% dmg vs armour, plus another researchable +25%. Even if the bonuses are strictly addictive, the +50% dmg is enough to push the Avenger over the Tempest.
Also, the Avenger is already more accurate than the Tempest, and with the second accuracy bonus the Avenger becomes reliably accurate at mid range even on auto.  The Tempest's accuracy plumment after the first burst.

On IFF Reaper, my Sentinel with AP Ammo use weapon fire to "dearmour" husks before killing them with Throw.
Using the Avenger: I go burst-burst-burst-splatter
Using the Tempest: I go burst-pause-burst-pause-burst-splatter.  Time is crucial when you got a dozen husks charging in to club you to death.

I picked up the shotgun my first playthrough thinking it would be my answer to husk rushes or would help me rush into something and blow it's head off, but it just doesn't work out that way.  The AR is a much better multi purpose weapon and the Vindicator puts out about as much burst up close as a Claymore.  The Sniper is just too wobbly for my tastes without any dilation and you still have Warp to hit just about what you could have hit with the Sniper.
