Is there any tuturial on how to get the game online after it's been installed? Is it a matter of configuring my router a certain way or is this problem linked to something else?

Make sure to open up any related ports in your firewall (go into your firewall for this in advance if you can - zonealarm, which I am using, crashed the game as it mis-handled one needed 'confirm' while the game was loading). Log into your account if you use dlc (first screen) or if you want to keep track online of your progress. Other than that, everything should be automatic. In my experience, you tend to get messages 'not connected to internet', but you still are.
