I've already finished one go through with my mage arcan warrior and shape shifter :).
I could not get Alistar to be king, and I could not get him to do the "dirty" with Morganna so no one would die...

He's a pansy... sigh.

I'm sure if I get him to like my character more the second go 'round, I can fix the doing the dirty. That or I'll be male (gross- just kidding).

But how can I make him be king? I didn't see any opportunity in the first go round to get him to suck it up and step up as king...

If you have a high persuasion skill, you can convince him to be king. If you want him to be king and enjoy it, get him to like you, get him to tell you about being Maric's son, and then, next time you talk to him, he'll want to look his sister up when you get to Denerim. Agree. Speak to her. When Alistair is dealing with what she's said, tell him "Everyone is only out for themselves."

He'll shape up pretty nicely.

It's very hard to get Alistair to turn down the ritual. Actually, I didn't know it was possible. You don't even have to use persuade or force him into it out of love. I can only guess that your cunning and coercien are very low.

There are lots of ways to make him king, as well. They just ask you who you think should be king/queen at landsmeet, although under some circumstances, Alistair will make himself king. I think you're going to have to tell us what you did, because it's kind of hard to figure out.... I'm guessing you spared Loghain?

I don't see him as a pansy, but that may be because my characters are always really high on cunning/coercion, so getting him to do what they want it easy.

This second go 'round I need to make him more tough to damage...

He was excellent for damaging and killing, but I found that he died soo easily. Guess I should focus on defense more. Still pretty new to this!

I aim to please.  He has so little testosterone in his system, it's amazing his balls haven't atrophied yet...and so on and such.  Better?

Increase his dexterity and constitution--especially his dexterity.  I like to keep his dex. no more than 3-5 pts lower than his str. (which should be as high as possible of course). He gets a lot of constitution pts from respecting the warden. That's easiest to acheive with a romance, but just as doable with friendship. I don't put him in plate, or use him as a tank (I don't use a tank at all), but many do. When he's spec'd well, he's very hard to kill, in any case.

OP, it sounds like your PC is a pansy. At least in the Coercion department. :)

Coercian is a must, for me. That goes for any game - the quests work out so much better in ME if you can talk a good talk.

With master coercion, I could probably get Alistair to marry Oghren, but I decided not to push him around. If he doesn't want to be king or marry Anora, fine. We can run off together.

Alistair is awesome - funny and self deprecating.  But he is so a pansy.

In anwser to this thread, it's pretty easy to raise his approval by talking to him and giving gifts.  Just pretend like you're sympathetic when he whines about this or that.  Eventually you'll learn about his lineage - which is the key to getting him on the throne.  I like the whole Anora and Alistair pairing since he doesn't want to rule and she does.  I haven't personally attempted or know if it's actually possible (with my female characters) to get him to marry me instead.  (I remember it's one of the dialogue/persuade options.)

It is possible for an HNF to marry him, but I view that as rather selfish - why replace a perfectly competent and popular queen with another who can't even have kids with Alistair. (Besides, I'm one of those women who prefers playing men, though, so I'll marry Al off to Anora whilst having lots of filthy gay sex with Zevran).

I was thinking I could marry him so me and Leli could do the same whilst living luxuriously.  Then when I got bored with that I could form alliances with the elves and dwarves, free the tower mages, (those that wish it,) and undermine the Chantry's authority in preparation for the 'Old God's' return.  I'd lead my own damn 'Exalted March.'

SERIOUS ENDGAME SPOILERS!  Read at your own peril.

Heh, my HNF always marries Alistair, but they don't even have to like each other -- and Ali certainly loses his virginity to Morrigan.  It is not necessarily selfish, either.  She thinks Alistair is weak and Anora power hungry and her father's dying words to her were that Couslands always do their duty.  She lets Alistair know she's going to be trying to make an heir with someone else, and she will do her best to make that happen (wuwu, filthy straight sex with Zev).  AND if she requests her own land and titles you get . . .

Fergus the Teyrn of Highever
Elissa the Teyrna of Gwaren
Elissa the princess-consort of Ferelden, whom is loved by her people as both their savior and new ruler.

So even if Elissa and Zevran don't have a child for Alistair to acknowledge, and Alistair doesn't make one aside from the one with Morrigan, the question of secession shouldn't be a serious one *grin*  Fergus CAN have children, after all.

*sigh* this was my most recent ending.  I actually thought it was pretty sad.

If not wanting to have sex with a woman as rude as Morrigan makes one a 'pansy', there are a lot of pansies in this world. I mean, this is a woman who gives you disapproval for telling a man that his wife is dead, and for disposiing of a body with a modicum of respect. I'm not one of those who dislikes Morrigan, she's a product of her upbringing, but I can see why a man wouldn't want to sleep with her given a choice.

Why would you want Alistair to have sex with Carth Onasi's dead wife?

Hey, don't go slammin' on my girl -  I might have to start beating up on Zev again:)  Besides, not wanting to sleep with Morrigan is a very un-manlike behavior.  Most men will sleep with a beautiful woman even if they don't like her.  Conversely, if a woman is particularly unattractive, no amount of inner beauty will make him want to.

Hey, I actually like Morrigan and I'm not a Zevran fan, but I think it's good to not purposefully bash characters--just because we know that it will bother others. I'm just saying that Morrigan has some communication issues that might not lead some to favor her.

Side note: I actually know men who've turned down beautiful women because they found something about their behavior or personality unappealing. Admittedly, these weren't men who were hard up for choices. ;)
