Neither do I. I tried to phrase my post as neutrally as possible, but, people are morons and they'll start retarded arguments over religion at the drop of a hat. Especially if that argument happens to be on the Internet.

No, now it will devolve into whether using words like 'moron' and 'retarded' is the best possible way to make your point. ;)

We are sprung from the Stone, and to the Stone we return.

Which in itself is almost a carbon copy of the broad based Christian funeral chant "for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."  I think the verse is from Genesis, Google it if you care.

Maferath = Judas
Tevinter = Rome
Archon Hessarian = Pontius Pilate and Constantine

Archon Hessarian being symbolically similar to Pontius Pilate, okay, but I wouldn't say Constantine. Constantine built his political power on the Christian faith and spread it quite forcefully, so I'd say Emperor Kordillus Drakon is the Constantine of Thedas. Makes me think, does the Chantry have something similar to saints? The qunari do, I would think the Chantry would, too, but I can't recall reading anything about that.

Edit: Mixed Christianity and Chantry up, fixed it.

The Internet is a hostile and unforgiving place. Avoiding a flame war is like trying to walk unscathed through a minefield with a blindfold on. Likely it isn't going to happen.

I'd be inclined to disagree with the last - it's an easy comparison to make at first glance, but the Tevinter Chantry struck me since my first runthrough as a cynical mouthing of the words to stop Tevinter from being Exalted March'd while allowing the magisters to stay in charge. It wouldn't surprise me if the Black Chantry still secretly worships the Old Gods.

That's just cause they don't understand the word opinion.  That and a lot of poeple of faith are unwilling to open to mind to anything their faith doesn't tell them.
Notice how all religions have the same foundations and can be molded to fit the theme/culture at will:whistle: They are all one in the same.  Same cards, different deck.

And it's especially not going to happen if you choose to use a loaded term like "moron", no?

Possibly, but I can't think of anyone other historical figure who renounced Christianity only to embrace it and help build it. Then again, it's possible Hessarian's actions after the betrayal don't really have a real-world equivalent.

I always thought of Andraste as being somewhere between Jesus and Joan of Arc -- but otherwise those work as pretty broad comparisons.

Especially considering those roles are cornerstones of any major religions, sans a couple without any prophetic human figures.

The Chantry is clearly based on Christianity, but I don't see why there can't be other influences behind it as well.

One thing I find odd is how little singing we see in the game. We hear about the Chant of Light  and Andraste's songs pleasing the Maker and all that, but the priests of the Chantry don't do a whole lot of singing.

That's actually kinda lampshaded by the old woman in Denerim, the one who keeps putting food in the Chant. She complains that the Chant is never sung these days.

Heh, got me there. Fortunately, I didn't call anybody specific a moron. But really, starting a huge argument over religion on a forum about a video game of all things is a little asinine, no? Anyways, I just wanted to know whether David used the life of Muhammad as an inspiration for Andraste, as there's a lot of interesting stuff in the history of Islam that's very underused in Western fantasy.

Thats an interesting look at the lore lines of Andraste. I would preface Andraste more towards Joan of Arc given the lore behind her and the Quinari as more of an Islamic reference based on the converstations with Sten and his divulgance of information about his race.

Andruil = Kurnous

Sylaise = Isha

June = Vaul

Falon'Din = Ynnead

Elgar'nan = Kaela Mensha Khaine

Dirthamen = Morai-Heg

Fen'Harel = Cegorach

Mythal = Asuryan

At least that's the impression. Also possible that Ghilan'nain = Lileath, but that doesn't really match.
