Ok,

I am officially starting a protest regarding the absolutely abysmal programming when it comes to squad AI. I'm not talking just about bioware here, because other games have just as big, if not bigger problems (*cough* Gears *cough*)

Seriously though, just today I died twice on Tali's loyalty mission because she decided that it would be a good place to take cover right behind a tiny crate and then stick her head out as a Hunter was pumping her enviro-suit with more holes than a pin cushion. Or worse, deciding that the best cover would be that active geth charging at her!!!!

What the hell?!?!

Bad enough that I have to make sure I don't do anything stupid on insanity, but I have to worry about babysitting my team. They're supposed to be the most skilled and dangerous in the galaxy.. and yet they're completely inept! Dev's can program enemy AI that can violate you in seconds if you don't play right... and yet to date, it remains endemic to have allies that are dumber than the 43rd president :-P.

So yeah, please tell me I'm not alone here, and feel free to post your experiences with squad stupidity. Perhaps if enough horror stories are circulated, the Dev's might decide to upgrade the intelligence of our allies with something other than that of a two-year old.

If nothing else, would it have been so hard to put in a "stay-in-cover-and-do-nothing-till-I-tell-you-to" button. At least that way we could just use their powers without worrying about them charging into a meat grinder in the first two seconds of a fight!  ARGHGHG!

I like when they take cover standing on top of a crate, that's always good. Miranda seems pretty stupid, I'm stuck on the first part of the collector vessel right now and she insists in running out into fire despite my telling her not too. Sometimes though they surprise me, then in the next mission dumb as a post.

Every time I do the final stretch of the iff mission my squadmates run way back towards the entrance and leave my alone to fight all those husks/scions. Well every time except for the one time mordin thought he could take on all the husks and 2 scions at once and rushed them, needless to say that went well for him.

Oh yes.. the 'look at me' cover system as I like to call it :D

*sigh* Mordin rushing husks.... apparently his guilt over the Genophage was such that he felt it necessary to feel what it is truly like to be a Krogan :P

I don't normally have too many issues with most squad members on the majority of missions except for Miranda.  Seriously, everyone talks about how she's such an awesome squadmate (and her abilities are awesome), but she dies more than anyone else ever no matter what. She's always the first to kamikaze or get stunlock killed by eating two rockets to the face.  Sure, you can always "park her in a corner" but it diminishes her worth when someone else could actually be there in the fight using guns as well and not dying.

She also has major issues following directions and tends to ignore where you tell her to move, or even after she moves there she quickly "forgets" where she was supposed to be and decides to do whatever, which usually results in her dying in the next few seconds.

I don't know if this counts but during my insanity play through my squad mates would sometimes just vanish/port to other parts of the map.I would have to hit the down arrow for them to regroup which would lead to them running to me from where ever the hell they were, or they would just teleport on top of me.

And one time Miranda took cover behind explosive barrels *cringe* it looked like Mordin shot it causing it to explode but im not sure if squad mates will do that on their own. Needless to say it exploded before I could manual position her.

The squad AI while playing on normal seemed like a fantastic improvement over ME, but on insanity it's back to the same old stupid box shooting, rocket eating dumbness.

I was thinking in insanity, only play in that level. But I'm not saying they dont do idiot things, but overall, their behavor is nice. Also when you know when a battle is going to be tough you just put them behind cover.

They don't stay where you position them though. Sometimes they'll stay behind the same spot and do absolutely nothing, including shoot back at an enemy when they're getting destroyed :P. Other times after a few moments they'll just start running around like morons and get killed.

They leave cover when the battle is over, or part of it at least.

.

Maybe it's just me, maybe the AI likes me better. But I was trying to remember and I really couldn't remember the last time I died because of a teammate.

The AI wont take cover. THey will stand or crouch where I want them to take cover but they wont actually place their back on the wall/crate/box and then they die.

garrus on his loyalty mission forgot that when 2 heavy mechs were showering you with bullets you should stay behind the cover i keep mashing the direct sqaud button for you to stay behind, so of course he stands there and dies. i revive him, hoping he would learn his lesson and stay behind cover so the half a second of life he had didnt get destroyed. he didnt.

In the Garrus recruitment mission, I went with Jacob alone in order to close the doors to avoid the Blood Pack for entering. Well, the door situated in the end of that large hangar (the one on your right) costed me more than a few tries, because that stupid moron was standing still doing absolutely nothing while I was advancing, and me alone couldn't take over both the door switch, the enemies and the varren they were sending me. I was getting killed over and over by the shoots of by those beasts :P

So yes, I also hate the AI pretty much.

IFF mission. They *love* taking cover behind the explosive crates, and then use abilities like Incinerate on the Husk next to it, blowing themselves to pieces. -_-

They love standing in the line of fire...firing happily away while the enemies are ALSO firing happily away at them. When I command them to go into cover, it sometimes takes more than 5 sec to get there...during which I usually got agitated and pop my Shepard out...and got gun down. My Shepard's so paragon that he dies trying to save his squad mates.

They sometimes like to take cover on the wrong side of a box or wall I find, which always ends with much hilarity and medigel.

My personal favourite though is on that N7 mission to shut down the mech factory, with endless waves of mechs thrown in for kicks. They like to take cover behind the thin metal hand railing that looks down into the box filled main area. They may as well just paint "shoot me" on the back of their alternate costumes and be done with it.

The squad mates would be 100% better is they didn't leave cover when they where on 3hp.

Funny, had exactly the same problem as the OP with Tali trying to 'vanguard' the Geth on her loyalty mission. Maybe she took the references to posthumous pardons too much to heart, or maybe she was just pissed about her dad?

I think part of the problem may be her equipping the shotgun by default (since this is only effective at close range). In the end simply ordered her to stay behind a specific piece of cover at the start of every encounter - in fact that often seems to be the best policy for other squadmates too.

Miranda likes to use warp on her own damn time, instead of setting off a detonation when I tell her too she waits until the guy floats harmlessly away and blows him up fifty feat above where I wanted her too <_<

I was over at a friends house and he decided to use Jack on Horizon. Somehow she managed to get herself killed in just about every single fight. Towards the end we were like, oh look Jack died again, and in the last section with the tower she died about 2 seconds into the fight xD. It made me not ever want to use her on my own file, however, she did redeem herself on the reaper IFF for playing shockwave bowling with all those husks.

Theres a couple other times when squadies just decide to suicide themselves by running into an open area, but for the most part they handle themselves well for me.

Something that's always bugged me,
Even if I turn off 'auto-powers' every now and then Squad Members will use their ammo powers irrespective of their level.

They over-write my level 4 Warp Ammo (squad) for a level 1 incinerate.

I facepalmed whenever a teammate climbed atop a crate and seemed content to stay there, eating mass-accelerated rounds till they died...

I send Miranda to take cover behind a crate. And the dumb **** stands ON TOP of the crate, then proceeds to die in a blaze of glory.
