So, I've played the game already once fully and it was fine. Here, I've played up to Virmire and then took a couple days off. In that time all I did was defrag my computer and defrag the registry. Now, when I play it again, it looks really bad. The resolution still changes, but the texture detail and sharpness is gone. Even when I put it back up to "Ultra-High" nothing changes.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling (which includes the patches and expansions) and still no luck. Before everything looked fairly sharp. Now armor/clothes are blurry wherever there is a line and peoples faces aren't as nice as they were.

If anyone know what's happening, I'd be grateful if you could tell me :) Thanks in advance.

I wanted to also add that I updated my graphics drivers to the latest version and there was still no improvement.

It makes no difference from a readers' point of view whether it ran before now if there is no diagnostic information. Read Chris' message, second from the top, and do what it says, exactly.

OS: Windows Vista 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core2Duo 3.00GHz
RAM: 4gigs
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD3870 (2 of them crossfired)
Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatable.
DirectX: Whatever the latest one is. I keep it updated.

Game is: Mass Effect 1
From: EBGames (Disc)

Version Information:
-MassEffect.exe v1.02
-MassEffectLauncher.exe v1.01
-MassEffectConfig.exe v1.02
-UninstallMassEffect.exe v1.03

System Details:
-Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo CPU E6850 @3.00 GHz
-Clock Speed: 3003 MHz
-Physical Memory: 3.99 GB

-Display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 3870
-VRAM: 512 MB
-Driver Version: This is blank in the configuration utility, but the driver version according to "Device Manager -> ATI Radeon HD 3870" information is 8.702.0.0.

-Sound Adatper: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
-Driver Version: 6.0.1.5391

-Operating System: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
-DirectX Version: DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later

Problem:

What? The Graphics seem to be at the lowest setting even when I try to but them back up to the highest. The graphics option even says everything as at "ultra-high" and such, but it still looks worse than it did before. The only thing that really changes is the resolution, but that only changes the size of the menu buttons and such.

When? After a couple days hiatus from the game, the only thing I've done to the system in that time was Defrag the computer's harddrive and the registry. In terms of when did it start in the game, it started when I got to Virmire, but even if I load up previous saves they still look bad.

Where? Everywhere.

Why? I can only assume it had to do something with the defragging... But I've done as much before with no problem. Not to mention I re-installed everything, which I assume would've put all registry files back where they need to be.

(Thanks to Gorath Alpha for letting me know of a specific format. Hope this helps. I REALLY hope this helps since it's quite annoying.)

Could it have anything to do with the configuration not identifying the graphics driver?

Well, I hope someone will have any kind of information soon... I really do. I'm going to be doing ME2 once this is done and I hope that isn't as messed up as this is.

A few more considerations to ponder.  How timely are your drivers?  A lot of (single core) HD 3870 owners have had troubles in Dragon Age and needed to literally down-clock to run that game.  I don't think that ME1 is quite as sensitive about video card speeds, but it is comparatively twitchy about drivers.  Many users have found it necessary to roll back their drivers to older versions.  Most of them have been Geforce owners, but it is something to consider when your graphics suddenly go all wonky.

I believe you said that you reinstalled the game and the patch, but have you also reinstalled Dx9 and your video drivers?

To the first idea, I didn't change my drivers at all between stopping for a couple days (when it worked fine) and when I resumed play. I only updated them after it went wonky. Also, for Dragon Age, I've had absolutely no problem running it on full (minus shadows. I always turn off shadows).

I did do a full uninstall of my graphics drivers last night. Both uninstalling as well as going through device manager, display adapters and uninstall that way. Then reinstalled the latest drivers. I haven't tried then, I will admit as I haven't had time yet.

I have not reinstalled DirectX 9, I shall go to microsoft and do that now and see if there's any luck. Thanks for the suggestions.

Quick update about DirectX:

It said that an equivalent or newer version was already installed so it had no need to install/reinstall.

So, I went in the game after all that's been said.

No luck, everything still looks like it's on the lowest setting.
