My big problem is so many issues in both ME1 and ME2 could be solved if you had the right dialogue option. Rather than having Ash/Kaidan get all pissy with my Shep on Horizon, My Shep would grab them by the shoulders and shake the sense into them.

These terrible dialogue choices are belief suspending. Its not the script or the voice acting, its that, when faced with specific circumstances, no reasonable person would respond with such mediocre replies.

Most altercations can be solved by being articulate, and in ME, Shep very rarely has dialogue options that are the most sensible option for the given situation.

I can't be the only one thinking "why the hell wouldn't they let me just do xxxx" and the reason is "because then the game would be over."

I disagree, I think we should be able  to have reasonable choices and reasonable dialogue trees to fit the circumstances, without compromising the narrative or pace of the game.

i am pretty sure such an open ended game that allows you to create your own responses is not only the ideal, but the goal of most RPG games... to allow you to create your own story within the story, to make it that much more memorable to you.

unfortunately, its impossible.

the responses we are given the choices of using are the best ones they can come up with that allow the player a fleeting facade of free will within the confines of their storytelling.

they could be thought through a little better, though.

Yeah, that's one scene out of LOTS. Generally, Shepard is fairly rational. There's rarely an option to be irrational, in fact. Most choices can be justified in some way.

For every time you may feel Shep's dialogue is limiting, I feel there's usually at least one more instance of him/her outdoing your expectations. The one that springs to mind is if you actually talk to Kalisa without just knocking her the hell out, both the paragon and renegade responses in that instance are very impressive in my opinion. The para/rene choices during Tali's trial are also pretty eloquent considering at the end of the day you're a soldier/combat operative and not a master speaker.

This is not the story of your character.  This is the story of Shepard.  I've not found it difficult to suspend my disbelief in any of the situations in ME2 in regards to Shepard's responses.

Liara: I gave you to Cerberus Shepard, I gave your body to them because they told me they could bring you back, and I just couldn't let you go.

Shepard: I will talk to you later Liara.

To reiterate some posters' points, this is Shepard's story. you are exploring the decisions he could have made. BW (or any experience RPG gamer for that matter) isn't unaware of the other choices games would have made, just that it would just make the game impossibly large in scale. I'm sure some gamers would choose to ditch Cerberus and join the Alliance as early as possible in the game but this would dilute the narrative in favour of increased options.

This.

Still think this is the worst scene in the game.

Yes... without a doubt the worst scene in the game. Second place goes to the meting with Ashley/Kaidan on Horizon. Some dialog options are just horrible and so out of place it's scary.

does pushing a guy out the 43 floor of a sky scrapper die hard style count as rational?

I was kinda disappointed that I didn't get to react more determinedly to Kaiden's flipout on Horizon, since if I had been there personally I would have chased after him explaining the entire situation and professing my undying love for him, but there are limitations when making a game like this. Of course there are some scenes that could be improved to make them more believable, but I think Bioware do a great job with all the options they give.
