What's the point? By then i'll have finished the game and have nothing to use my cool upgraded weapons on.
Do they transfer to a new game imported from that character?
If I bother to find and purchase all the upgrades

I've yet to do a NG+, but I'd think so or hope so. In anycase, you have all those upgrades available for when new DLC releases since you can continue playing after the main story.

You'll be able to pat yourself on the back for spending so much time mining resources, and feel good about it.
That's about it, though. Upgrades don't carry in NG+, only your weapons, armor, and talents. You get about 50 000 of every resource but that's it and you'll still have to mine if you want your cool upgrades back. If you want to keep doing things after the suicide mission I suggest keeping a few N7 assignments, or, as the poster above me said, wait for DLC.

Upgrades save crew lives on the suicide mission. Be sure to talk under "Investigate" to each new crew member (once the lab is open of course) and ask them if they have any ideas to upgrade the ship. Tali's Garrus' & Jacob's all make sure you survive the mission.
