Really, No Outcry for a Batarian?

I was thinking of the former Batarian slave as a skilled engineer/explosives expert; the Batarians seem to use their alien slaves for hard manual labor (mining, etc), but a Batarian born into the slave caste might be allowed to do more skilled work. He'd use those skills to escape, only to find himself an exile in a galaxy that isn't fond of Batarians, and unable to go near other Batarians because, hey, he's an escaped slave with a bounty on his head. I picture him as a rather paranoid, morose, cigar-smoking individual (did you notice the Batarians smoking in the game? Did they develop that habit independently, or is humanity exporting cigarettes to the Batarians in an attempt to give them all lung cancer?) who doesn't like humans much, but likes the idea of being re-enslaved even less.

I like the idea of a Batarian squadmate, if it was done right. Also, the news announcement on Illium about Batarians complaining about the Council's rejection of slavery said something about slavery being an integral part of the Batarian caste system. I took that to mean that the Batarians aren't just enslaving aliens--that they have an entire caste of enslaved Batarians, too. In which case, I'd like to see a squadmate who comes out of that caste: a Batarian who doesn't necessarily like humans, but who has had a chance to experience his/her species' slaving practices personally. That would give them a pretty interesting perspective on human/Batarian politics and the ethics of slavery/piracy. In which case, their loyalty mission could be your Shepard helping them permanently escape from slavers trying to recapture them. If your Shepard really hated Batarians and didn't want one in the squad, they could have the option to refuse to help, and the Batarian would be gone.
Good idea.

In ME3 when we have to go around to all the species and get them to uphold their agreement with the Grey Wardens, err.. I mean Citidel Council. When it comes to helping the batarians in their little quest to gain their loyalty, I will side with the werewolves.

I'm ruthless and a colonist but I have no problem with a batarian squaddie nor is my Shepard racist against the batarian people.MutantSpleen wrote...
I think its pretty hard for a Ruthless Shepard to accept Batarians. I mean, I went out of my way to kill every damn one of those bastards on Torfan. They even tried to surrender and I gunned them down as they surrendered.
My Shep didn't kill all those batarians on Torfan because they were batarian, he did it because they were criminals, he couldn't give a damn what race they were my Shep would've done the exact same thing if they were asari, turian or even human.

Not only that, but it has absolutely NO evolutionary advantages whatsoever. It would never be selected for, because 4 giant holes that lead to your brain is a sure way for a species to die off before it ever gets started. It causes structural and integrity flaws in the skull, and there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that an advanced species like a humanoid would need more than 2 eyes anyway.
Am I racist? absolutely. racist against creature designers who think double brows are cool. Just knowing that these things are in my squad would make me mad.

It would appear that many baterians are blindly racist too, which creates an interesting problem.
My character doesn't really like Batarians (Torfan is more a cause then a result for that, he never really enjoyed that particular disaster), but he liked Geth even less, and look what happened. He has one on his crew now, and even managed him and his favorite Quarian to get along. If that is not a problem, why the hell would a Baterian be a problem?

For some reason a brutish gladiator comes to mind. Like a casteless dwarf competing in the arena in DA:O for the amusement of the rich elite.
I would like the Batarians to explored in some way, though, doesn't necesarily have to be a squadmate. Just some more DLC killing terrorists or whatever would make me happy, provided some info on their society or government was expanded upon.

Reasons for humanity to dislike the batarians:
-Their government supports terrorism
-They seem to think uninhabited planets are reserved for them automatically
-They support slavery
-and much, much more.
But hey, a species having a rival (even a rather pathetic rival, in this case), can be a good thing. Competition breeds improvement.
I actually chose to save the batarian dying of plague on Omega, among other acts of kindness. Just enough to sow a little doubt into some of their citizens just before humanity decides to destroy them

Oh, please no!
If there's a Batarian squad member - which is what I'm hoping for - let him take a stand and not the usual "alien discovers the virtues and greatness of human society". A Batarian doesn't have to be a racist, terrorist or generally a homicidal maniac who plunges asteroids into planets, but I'd like a character that, while seeing the necessity to work with humans and accepts it willingly for the greater good of the Galaxy, is still a Batarian patriot and doesn't need need to agree with the values humanity stands for.
Maybe a SIU member who fought at Elysium, or better yet, defended a Batarian colony that was attacked by the human military. It would put a nice twist to the idea that we're the saintly side in the conflict...

I want a vorcha squadmate.
I agree, a vorcha would be a great addition. They're the despised underclass of galactic society, exploited as cannon fodder, slave labor, or target practice. Addressing that stuff in a character arc would be great. The best thing though would be if you could train/adapt the vorcha in some way, personalise it for your playthrough. If the Blood Pack can do it, why not someone with a research lab, an AI, and a scientist salarian?
As to a Batarian sqauddie, about time. I thought we'd get one in ME2, but no. It would be good to see the rise of humanity and the Alliance from the other side of the fence.

Yes but one must realise the only places we've seen batarians is in BDtS to stop a terrorist attack and on Omega (a place where everyone is corrupt to some extent), thats not 2 fair places to judge an entire species off.Beholderess wrote...

I just assumed since its the 21st century (22nd in ME) people would be smart enough not to make broad generalisations based on the actions of a few and condemn the innoccent.
Sadly people are not smart.

I don't really care for batarians because
1 - They ugly (shallow reason is shallow, but whatev)
2 - I have never met a nice one, cept the one whose life i saved
3 - Whenever they get into any organization or community it seems to go downhill fast
4 - i don't like slavery, batarians are suing the council so they can keep doing it
I would be open to a batarian team mate, but i doubt i would use him much unless he was cool personality wise >_>

We don't need repenting Batarians only there to tell us how great humanity and its values are. We need one who can stand up against humans, and who is proud of his cultural heritage, with all its flaws (just like we are so proud of our cultures despite all their flaws).

Well, I've never said it is right - only understandable.
Plus, encounters with batarians in BDtS and on Omega are different from encounters with hostile members of other species in one important aspect. While many aliens in the game dislike humans, don't remember others using this dislike as a reason for an actual attack - again, in the game itself, not ME universe in general. Sure, we see a lot of turian, asari and salarian criminals, but their allegiance usually lies with the gang in question. They prey on everyone equially, so to speak. They act for their gang, not their people.
Yet batarians in BDtS, the raiders Shepard could have encountered in many backstories, that poisoner on Omega - they seemed to be acting for their people, not for a particular organisation. So, very easy to make a generalisation.
Speaking of backstories - I can remember only 2 combinations which have nothing to do with batarians, namely Earthborn/Survivor and Spacer/Survivor. Every other combination seems to have batarians responsible for a lot of trouble in protagonist's life. So it is no surprise that dislike for batarians is somewhat more...personal.
