Let's take weapons for example. ME2 offers no concrete stats on the base damage of a weapon. So how do you decide if one weapon is better for you? By "feel" when playing the game? Ini-file snooping? Controlled testing and reverse engineering? I don't want to do any of that. I guess hiding these stats may encourage players to just get on with it and choose something. But what about those who actually do want to know more? An RPG system is stats based anyway, so spit it out instead of giving vague generalisms like "very effecitve, effective, not effective". When you consider that there is no base-damage information or rate of fire stats in-game, there is no value to those aforementioned terms, and this makes it all very sloppy.
Let's move on to something else, like the power buffs. In ME1, you know the base damage rate, but the power damage you get from your talents do not show anywhere in the game but the Squad page. This makes figuring out exactly how much firepower you're dealing with a tiring game of Microsoft Excel 101. If the information was right there...it'd make it easier for me to decide.
Offering hard numbers doesn't make the game more black and white. Every player will still have a preference to whittling down armor or shields etc. It's just more convenient knowing how much you've prioritized a certain skill or power. For now it's akin to fumbling around. PS: yes I know some of these forums have such information posted in them but I'm asking for in-game display of such information
So what I'm proposing is something along the lines of this: Say when you're at your weapons locker, you have a detailed page of information, with several columns of information. Eg one column for base stats, one for player power buffs, and a total/effective stats column. I know the in-game switchable powers may make this a little more tricky but come on, Bioware has a lot of smart people, and they can make this happen if they want to. If this is too much info for a casual player, perhaps make it an option to disable/enable detailed stats info.
BTW, I love ME1 and ME2 but this is one area which has always bugged me. And it just hasn't improved while the rest of the game did for me, by and large.
