If SWTOR wasn't coming out, Mass Effect probably would be the most likely IP for Bioware to make a MMO out of. Since SWTOR is elbow deep in production, a ME MMO will never happen.

This. The behemoth that is WoW has seen off some big competition in its time. Even SWTOR will be hard pressed to handle it. The idea that Bioware would cannibalise SWTOR by throwing another MMO into the mix is laughable. DA and ME shall remain single player games. Thankfully.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. I played WoW on and off for about 2-3 years. A good MMO, or game for that matter, should keep your attention. WoW never kept mine for more than 3-4 weeks at a time in stints months apart from each other. BW seems to know what they're doing when it comes to games, at least, so maybe soon we can see some real innovation in the MMO market. You know, since Blizzard hasn't really had any creativity, at all, since day one.

Please god no...

ME is great as a single-player series. Do not mess things up with MMOs or multiplayer!

rape another franchise please. ME deserves to stay a EPIC single player franchise imo

mmo's are not a way to advance a franchise or ip, it's choice to kill one

MMOs these days are nothing more than a generic cookie cutter with a different skin. BW is making ToR which will no doubt circle the drain quick (sry BW :[ ) so it would be rather stupid of them to ruin ME with an MMO...

then again its EA so you never know :(

Truth can be harsh. MMOs suck and BioWare is all the wiser not making them. It would ruin the franchise, just look at what FF11 did to that franchise. MMOs were good back in EQ days but still was played by fat losers who had no lives and if they had a life to begin with the MMO ruined that. The concept of MMOs was great but then you get 100 people into one "zone" and the stupidity gauge goes off the chart and the fun meter hits rock bottom.

@FutureBoy; Before you try to insult me,
know your demographics. MMOs are played mostly by middle-aged fat men
who live off a fixed income (probably due to disabilities caused by
sitting on their fat butts playing MMOs). I'm also in the military
overseas so somehow I doubt that I am using my mother's computer
screen. But nice tired-ass attempt at a comeback. Your special.

I've never seen such a pitiful individual on the internet. Seriously, the sheer ignorance and stupidity of some people on the internet makes me wonder what went wrong with the human race. When did it all go to ****?

Oh, and how exactly did Final Fantasy XI kill the franchise?

@Aeranduil; Thanks, you've called me ignorant, pitiful, and stupid, all insults aimed at me for insulting MMOs and the people who play them. You are far superior to me. /sarcasm. Anyway FFXI killed the franchise because since then Square-Enix hasn't made one single significant addition to the franchise or gaming industry. Need proof look no further than Blue Dragon and the rest of the dreck that they have been producing.

On another note obviously BioWare is making the Star Wars MMO based on KotOR but given the current trend of MMOs it's going to take a trip down Cookie Cutter Lane, and have to contend with WoW (which has a truly massive fan-base) and will probably fail. It also seems that BioWare didn't start with plans for MMO greatness but EA wanted a bit of that market. So yes, after all is said and done, I think BioWare would be all the wiser not making MMOs.

If they do make a MMO then all the MMO players will be happy, if you don't like it-don't buy it and stick to the single player games bioware makes. Shaddup already with all the "it'll destroy the franchise" shieet =/

Some people wonder why having more MMOs in general would be a bad thing. Here's your answer. WoW is basically the successful and probably the only MMO which is basically well the "greatest" in terms of everything. WoW has everything a "perfect" MMO needs. No, I am not a WoW fanboy I don't even play it anymore.  Now most MMOs tend to suck in comparison, take for example (even though i enjoyed it) The Matrix Online. That MMO had a bunch of financial problem and was obviously unpopular to the general gaming community. Hellgate London, same thing. The problem with MMOs is that you will need an average or minimum of a x number of folks.

BioWare's specialty is mainly with Singleplayer games and story. Making a MMO even though its standalone may screw around with their finance as the chances are they were just throwing all the money away to making a cheap wannabe WoW MMO. This is a fact and a Mass Effect MMO or even a Star Wars MMO (I doubt Star Trek online will last really long) is a pretty bad idea. Even than MMOs are pretty rubbish these days are more like MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GRINDING GAME.

For one; it wouldn't work with the current setting. It would akin to the butchery Blizzard preformed on the Warcraft lore in order to create WoW.

Secondly; and this is personal preferance. I have never seen an enjoyeable MMO; every one I've tried is repetitious and offers nothing beyond the hack'nslash gameplay of  'kill X' or 'deliver package to Y'.
Mind you, the majority of the gameplay in both ME games are essentially the same, but a singleplayer game can tell a story. Once you have not one main character, but a 1000 running around in the world, you can't do that anymore.

Oh, and there's also the fact that I'd rather not have Douchebag McBackstabby who's living in his mom's basement going around messing up my gameworld.

The difference is, my insults were understandable; you completely ripped into the MMO community for no apparent reason, when you clearly don't have a bloody clue what the MMO community are like. Generalising the entire  MMO playerbase in one fell swoop, calling them fat middle aged men with no lives, you should be ashamed of yourself. It must make you feel really big, hiding behind a computer screen being able to insult millions upon millions of people world-wide, when you probably haven't met a single one, basing your opinions on ridiculous stereotypes that only an obnoxious fool would take to be true.

And in fairness to Square Enix, they have only released ONE proper Final Fantasy game since XI came out, and it wasn't that bad, certainly not as bad as many people made it out to be. And XIII looks to be a very strong entry into the series. It's getting mixed reviews, just like XII did, but that's no surprising when Square are trying to take the series into a new direction, away from the typical JRPG stereotypes and cliches that have dragged so many recent RPGs into the depths of mediocrity.

@Aeranduil; I'm going to take this in a different direction for a second, amuse me and try to follow along (I'm not insulting your intelligence, rather requesting your attention). I am a "Nerd" but I am not the stereotypical nerd, I have an ex-model for a wife, I'm in the military, and I am physically fit. But there ends my deviation from the stereotype, I love comics, video games, computers, sci-fi movies, play Magic the Gathering and I would play D&D but I have been out of the loop far too long to be able to understand the new rules in enough time to get a game underway in my very busy life. Now I understand there are going to be nerds like me that play MMOs, as there are going to be fat greasy men who play women characters and just want to have e-sex with someone while jerking it in their mother's basement. The sad truth is that any statistical data on MMO demographics are going to be from... MMO players and who can seriously trust the data? Would you? To be honest I played EQ and EQ2 a long time ago before I met my wife and before I had a life, but the one thing that I never seemed to be short of finding were horny people wanting to have e-sex and pretending to actually be women (I say pretending because I would send them my VOIP info and SURPRISE no one ever joined, but immediately left my party).

Why do I have a grudge against MMOs? Because I have been in the barracks rooms of soldiers who get hooked on them and I literally watched them waste away as human beings, most of which got discharged from the ARMY due to not being able to pass a simple PT test. Yes, I am extremely biased against MMOs because they always seem to bring out the worst in people.

I would disagree about making it an MMO...but one or two multiplayer modes couldn't hurt.

Thanks addiction you truly summed that up. /sarcasm

If I am trolling by actually explaining my opinions and offering graphical data to backup my position then what are you doing? Trying to add fuel to my fire? To be quite honest let me sum up your sentence in my own opinion like you just did to mine.

I will translate it for some of you.

"I am an elitist jerk that hates on people if they have different opinions of me because I must always fuel my ego and feel superior to everyone. If you disagree with me or don't share my opinion then you are wrong and ripe for flaming."

badmammajamma is dead on about the statistics. With skewed data (data like this which is not symmetric), the mode (the point where half of the data is below and half is above) can give you a better picture than the mean. While the average might be high, the majority of players are clearly under 30. There is no data on whether or not they have had a relationship, only whether or not they have actually lived with someone. This data clearly undermines your position, rather than supporting it.

That said, I'm not into MMOs and I'd be disappointed if we got a ME version rather than another single player RPG from Bioware.

I am surprised that no-one has mentioned EVE which is basically a very successful MMO set in a science fiction universe. Indeed to a large extent it is perhaps the model that a Mass Effect MMO should be looking at. That is one without 'quests' or missions but an open sandbox type thing. Basically you would have people moving goods, you would have pirates and you would have bounty hunters and merc bands. Pretty much what we see inside ME right now as going on.

This video kinda sums up what happens in ME that we see sometimes.

Big space battles? Got that here.

And we should be hearing more about the ground combat soon.

And the news is of course events like this.

In essence you can create great MMOs and ME does have the potential there. Its not going to happen within the current trilogy but outside of it. The only question is does BioWare think there is enough money there for such an endeavour to suceed? Hints are there that there is serious consideration on the matter going ahead.

For quite awhile I thought that a MMO would be a good idea based on the fact that I loved the universe that BioWare had created. I thought it would make for a great game. But after thinking about it further recently I changed my mind. What is so great about the current trilogy is the way the story unfolds which is something that you could never really achieve with great success in an MMO..

From what I understand that seems to be one of their goals with this new star wars mmo. So at the moment we just need to wait and see. I mean when it was announced that Blizzard was making a mmo the consensus seemed to be that they could not make a succesfull mmo and we all know how that turned out :)
If someone is going to put some good story telling into a mmo I think BW are the people to do it.
