Hi all,
I just finished my first the game for the first time. Used a male noble dwarfen tank as PC. Now doing my second run as a female city elf rogue. The first time I nver bhought any weapons or armour. I just used what I found. The only items I bought were some recipes, bags and the blooddragon armour. I think I also bought 1 tome of some sort.
When I finished the game I had about 300gold left.
So now my question. Did I miss anything really good? I see some vendor items that cost over a 100gold. Some may be better then what I have but not by a lot I think. Also I don't pay much attentions to rings waists etc. Are there must have items to buy from vendors? I think all recipies are (too) expensive.
I play the game at normal setting.
What do you do with your gold?

One thing I like about this game is that you dont usualy get the " I have TONS of cash and nothing left to spend it on " syndrome, theres always something usefull to do with your money

Agree with Aldridgeguy, and a specific set of things that are really worth buying if you've got money (I did something similar on my first CE Warrior playthrough, ending up with 250 gold that probably won't carry over to Awakening):
Wade's in Denerim:
- Felon's Coat is the best drakeskin chest armor in the game
- Evon the Great's Mail is the best Heavy armor (chest) in the game, and can be combined with parts of Wade's Superior Dragonscale heavy armor to keep the Wade's set bonus
- If you want the "light" version of Felon's Coat, pick up Shadow of the Empire in Orzammar
If you have the Warden Keep DLC, you don't really need to buy a mage's staff but there are some good ones for sale. Rose's Thorn and the Veshialle are two very good weapons, but quite pricy.
Lifegiver (ring) and Andruil's Blessing (belt) are *very* worthwhile, Ring of Ages is also nice but not crucial.
If you want to check out details of the different arms and armor, see http://dragonage.wikia.com/

Also if you use alot of Poison Making or Herbalism you can spend you gold on that very quickly.
You can get some good runes as well, but you can find most of them throughout the game if you wanna wait. Of course Tomes are always worth buying asap.

On my first playthrough (Casual) I spent and collected yet somehow managed to have roughly 300 sovereigns left. Now, playing on Normal, I have struggled quite a lot in the beginning because I didn't have ingredients for poultices nor money to spend since I invested in the Shadow armour mentioned in a previous post. I am terrible at micromanagement and need as many health poultices as I can get.
I too have realized that shopping for trap components and certain recipes are just a complete waste. At least on Casual gameplay. ...though I might try another rogue playthrough and try to make as much traps as possible. Might be fun.

Moar grenades !!
In all likelihood, though, there is always a super awesome item (weapon, piece of armor, amulet, belt, ring, whatever) to buy for a hundred or so sovereigns, so it's never been a problem for me. I don't think I've ever finished the game with more than 100 gold.

I donated it to my armies. I basically skipped level 22.

does donating work? i mean, i dont see a difference if i invest no gold or 120 gold.

Donating gives you 10 experience for every item (I have no idea how this works with gold tho). Cheapest way to level is to buy stacks of 99 elfroot in the Dalish camp for less than 1 gold and then give them to the Dalish army in camp.

Donating to your armies is for the final battle if im not mistaken. You will have allies you can call upon,Elves, dwarves, mages and humans. Each have their own advantages in battle and have a maximum number of each. Also youll need to make sure half of them survive to get the defender achievement unlocked.
What else do i do?I save it as gold will carry over into awakenings.

You find lots of good heavy armor, daggers and full-sized weapons, so it is more effective to buy other stuff - the best staff, longbow, mage robe and light armor and/or the best belt, amulet and ring. I like to buy most of the tomes, too.
It can present a role-playing challenge for heroic types, though. You get a lot less money if you do not demand a reward from everyone nor do morally dubious quests.

Tomes. As a rogue you'll be much more pressed for feats than you were as a warrior. After that, Andruil's Blessing (Circle Tower quartermaster) and Lifegiver (Garin in Orzammar) help any build.

I like to buy all the tomes, armour(not massive armour, can find plenty of that), the best weapons available for my charecter(the rest of my party can use whatever I find, greedy right lol) and the best runes available and I still have about 200 sovs available at the end even after crafting items.
Even then there's still about 4 of the expensive items left that I haven't had enough money for oor didn't need. It is definately not possible to get all the best items and that adds to replayability for me, I still haven;t tried Evon the Great's Mail.
