Hello there, Character Forum. I don't venture into these parts much, but I've got a bit of a dilemma that I was hoping you could help me with.

I just started an Infiltrator on Insanity, after finishing my Adept Insanity run. I was thinking I'd build him around fire and brimstone, go with Incendiary Ammo and Zaeed's Inferno Grenade. I don't know where I got this from, because apparently, Infiltrators doesn't get Incendiary Ammo. This made me a sad panda. It also put a bit of a conundrum in front of me; What do?

I'm a bit of a lore purist, so I'd like to stick to stuff that actually fits any given character. This means that my Biotic characters usually stick to biotic bonus talents or at least talents that remotely be considered to occupy that general field. In the case of the Infiltrator, that means I mostly want Combat or Tech.

It also occured to me that Inferno Grenade and Incinerate may occupy roughly the same function; If Inferno Grenade is vastly superior or something (or the other way around) I'd love to hear some arguments.

Anyway, taking suggestions, fire away! Treat me as a complete and utter noob, haven't played an Infiltrator in ME2 before. If it's any help, I was thinking about sticking mostly to Garrus and Thane, as far as companions go, each with their own ammo maxed out.

Reave or warp ammo. Barriers are a b**** when you're an infiltrator.

IIRC Warp Ammo is a good choice as the Infiltrator has Disruptor ammo vs shields and Incinerate vs armour but nothing vs barrier, which warp is good at. On Insanity all Collectors have Barrier so you need something useful against that which Warp Ammo offers.

Bonus Talent? After completing Miranda's Loyalty mission, "Slam" unlocks for Shepherd too. I maxed that out to 4, and my Infiltrator kicked major ass. Yeah, it's a biotic power, and my Shep wasn't a biotic, but that Talent rocks, and is really, really, really (get where I'm going here?), really powerful and useful. Saved my life in close quarters ALOT!!!

10 Squad Cryo Ammo
10 Assassination Cloak
1   Incinerate

4 squad disruptor ammo
4 assassination cloak
4 heavy incinerate
1 ai hacking
4 assassin
4 heavy warp ammo

Thats my build and imo it can't get any better. I use squad disruptor ammo because it overloads their weapons and stuns synthetics. And warp ammo since barriers are annoying.

I'd say AP ammo or Improved Geth Shields.

later in the game there are many more annoying enemies with Armor than there are with barrier. Personally I never had any problems taking out enemies with barriers. As long as it was a headshot I was 1 shotting collectors or getting them low enough that a squad member ability (such as concusion shot or a warp) would finish the mob off.

Tungsten ammo or heavy warp ammo, pick one. Personally I preferred tungsten but lets not get into that debate.

P.S. Inferno grenade is terrible for Shepard.

That's the general vibe I'm getting, too. Inferno Grenade being near-overpowered for squadmates, but worthless for Shepard, because he actually has to throw it.

Feels like there was some playtesting missing right there.

I found the opposite to be true for me.  Anything with armor was a joke because of the crazy bonuses my sniper rifle already got against it.  The little bit extra AP ammo gave me over warp ammo just wasn't necessary.  While warp ammo did offer a few nice bonuses.

Many collectors (and eclipse mercs) could be 1-shot even without a headshot.  One could argue this just encourages sloppy play and is not necessary if you are good.  I would agree, but also add that nobody is perfect and its nice to have a safety net.  Also, each Harbinger took 1 less shot from the Widow to kill.  Finally, I thought Samara was a cool character and so I brought her along a lot.  Reave + warp ammo is really nasty.

This probably just boils down to personal preference and playstyle.  Though, I am curious what enemies are you referring to that are more annoying with armor than barriers?  The only ones I can think of are Ymir mechs.  I'm guessing maybe scions too, but I found them quite easy on my infiltrator (very challenging as other classes though).

I'm thinking YMIR and Scions, too. And I'm saying that as an Adept with a sniper rifle. I don't know what real problems Infiltrators have (from the sounds of it, none). But even with Warp, I've learned to hate Scions and YMIR Mechs on Insanity.

On the other hand, we have plenty of Collectors with Barrier. But those barriers are usually stripped quickly, or at least they were, for me (with a submachine gun).

Yeah, scions were a huge pain with my adept.  Not very hard with my infiltrator though.  Stealth pretty much trivializes them because of how slow they are.  YMIR mechs are similar as well, just make sure to use disruptor ammo on their shields (obviously).  Your squadmates are probably going to drop while you are stealthed though, so make it a point to quickly deal with any other threats while they are still alive and acting as a distraction.  Then you can pretty much just dance circles around the big guys.

For the collectors, the point of the sniper rifle with the infiltrator is to not have to strip their defenses.  Pick a fresh enemy, one shot, one kill.  That way you don't have to worry about harbinger deciding to posess him when he's at 10% health.  Or you can much more quickly take down all the other collectors, so when you do get to harbinger he has no other options.
