No matter what else I say about Kaidan, I do love the enthusiasm of his fans. He'd better be back just for them. Image IPB

I actually liked Jacob. Unfortunately I played as Femshep and didn't romance him so I had to deal with the out-of-place overly flirtatious openings. I didn't find him to be the most interesting character ever, but I thought he was fairly well rounded, it's a shame we couldn't have learned much about him (like some of the stuff he did as a corsair, for instance).

I also never got the hate against him. He's very honest and upfront. The only time he ever seemed overtly hostile to me was when you brought Thane on board, and I mean...fair enough, he's an assassin who you only just met. That Tali thing I always just assumed was the result of ignorance or 'foot in mouth' since he hasn't been exposed to many (any) Quarians. I personally think Tali came off really bad there and she was ridiculously rude, and I'm a huge Tali fan.

But yeah, Jacob was definitely overshadowed by the more colourful members of the team. Hell, Garrus is the Turian-batman, and Thane is a nearly extinct-repentant-assassin. Miranda was a 'love to hate' kinda person for me. Jack I was pretty neutral towards. Ashley had a really distinct personality (though I wouldn't call it love to hate, her stories about her family really warmed me to her), Kaiden didn't really expand on his character again.

What realy got me was the remark after recruiting Tali, he deliberately brought up the topic of having an AI on board and suggested she meet it...I think I may send him through the vents this time...Yeah no Jacob in ME3 then.

exactly! - this was a moment when I really waited for renegade interuption... something like *shut the *** up* or *airlock him* >-<

He brought it up because she was going to be working on the ship.  What next?  Recomend he get thrown out for showing her the bathroom?

well..he could also brought it up because she is Quarian? I don't recall him telling this to any other crew member (well, except Mordin -and it was EDi who talked) - why? they don't need to know there's an AI ?- they were going to be working on the ship too.
in my opinion his remark was spiteful and out of place, cause he wasn't content about working with a Quarian.

I think the AI comment was just insensitivity on Jacob's part. If you think back to the start of the game when you run into Tali on Freedom's Progress, you can ask why the quarians hate Cerberus. She says why, Miranda goes into Cerberus cheerleader mode and says "that's not how I'd describe it". Jacob is the one who puts a stop to it by saying "we can argue this later". Jacob doesn't really hold grudges or give in to petty barbs it seems. How quickly he washes his hands of his father instead of dwelling on what his dad did after his loyaltly mission was worth noting.

I definately agree that if Miranda had said the line it would have been malicious though.

I always quite liked Kaidan, right up to the point he pulled the "I didn't think you were a... well..." crap on my Femme-Shep. That was just nail in coffin time for me. He wasn't boring; he was sensitive, caring, and acted like a total guy when his masculinity was threatened. He had to go ;)
As for Jacob, he's rational, honest, respectful, and once you romance him, a total guy. He fades a little into the wallpaper though (much like Kaidan did) because he is overshadowed somewhat by bigger, bolder characters; Mordin is fun to talk to, as is Grunt, Garrus, Jack, Tali, etc. while Jacob remains the voice of rationality and reason (until he starts talking about knocking a few ales back on the Citadel... then he comes down a little to one-of the-posse level). I had a bit of a similar issue with Miranda... boy, did I want to shake her and say Leave the computer alone and TALK TO ME! If I'm walking into hell with you, I want to know who you are, not how good your ass looks in that catsuit!
The only thing I really hated about any of them was Jacob's constant saluting. Jeez, knock it off! Informal ship! Shep's knocking boots with at least one member of the crew at any one time - how much more flaunting of regs can you take? ;)

Just leave kaidan on virmire and use Jacob for the tech assignment.

And there you go, the two most hated characters ( or with the lowest scores, or wathever) are out of your game

That was kind of an issue with everybody on the ship.  It seemed like you ran out of dialog fairly quickly.

Combing through the data from my survey, I have arrived at why Kaidan and Jacob have such low mean scores.

Some people claim that they are "hated", but I propose that this is not the case whatsoever.

I believe that people don't like them because they are surrounded and eclipsed by far more interesting and memorable characters. It is not that they are badly written characters whatsoever - but that people see them as inherently bland characters, surrounded by aliens who have greater stories to tell.

Personally, I like these characters and don't mind them very much at all - but in the face of characters like Mordin, Legion, Garrus, Tali, etc, etc, they just don't stand out whatsoever.

Hence, this concludes my theory... need to get back to studying statistics if I can...

Yeah, I have to agree. I want to like Jacob, but he's soooo very, very bland. I mean, Miranda and Ashley are both human, and yet they have interesting personality, stories to tell and memoriable moments, so its not just that their 'plain old humans'.

That said, boring is sadly what they are.

So, I see a lot of people complaining about Kaidan being "whiney"? What exactly did he whine about? I really don't remember him going off on some "Woe is me!" tangent anymore than the other NPCs.

I really don't get the romance issue with Jacob. Femshep hits on him....not the other way around. Yet so many people blame that as a dislike for the character. So she ****astically flirts with him and he's the bad character....a lot of rational thinking going on there.

This guy saved the Citadel and the Council....alone....in ME Galaxy, yet he gets incredibly short changed in this game so he doesn't overshadow your Shep and doesn't pose a threat to the fanboy desires for Miranda. Hell, he could have been a Spectre candidate...no, he SHOULD have been a damn Spectre candidate. When you meet with the Council for the first time he's in your party and doesn't even get a bit of recognition. "Oh hey guys, remember when I saved your ******* too?...just standing in the corner here...a 'hi' would be nice.....I'm just sayin'....sigh...oh, well". The potential for this character was totally mishandled by Bioware in my opinion. Don't even get me started on that loyalty quest of his.

Of course, my opinion and $25 will get you a small Starbucks coffee.

As many females, I was put off by the flirty attitude of my Shepard when talking to him. But he's very funny to romance by using renegade lines. Shepard mercilessly teases him, and he's now my Shepard's favourite scratch post.

I had a bad start with Kaidan, but I now deeply like the character. He's subtle, with some sort of dignity. I guess it's hard for Bioware to craft male human characters that don't overshadow male Shep, yet are still attractive for female Shep.

I think all remarks about Jacob insulting Tali with the "introduce yourself to the ship's AI" comment are really off base. Tali is one of my favorite crew members, and his comment didn't strike me as being even the least bit insulting.

1. Not one drop of malice in Jacob's tone. This was either a harmless comment or an poorly worded comment that was not meant to be harmful.

2. Yes, everyone knows about the accidental creation of the Geth 300 years ago. Still, what evidence do we have that Quarians have any kind of lasting aversion to AI's? I don't remember ever hearing anything negative from a Quarian. In fact, if you will think back to Illium, the Quarian slave who is trying to get a job is supposed to be an exremely skilled AI programmer. Hmm... doesn't sound like a taboo to me.

In all honesty, "whiney" is the wrong adjective to use for Kaiden.  More than anything, the accusations of whininess are fallout from him sharing a voice actor with Carth (who really WAS whiney).

Better terms for Kaiden would be "wishy-washy," "boring," or "safe."  I have never for a moment claimed not to understand his appeal with female gamers.  It's pretty obvious that he was created with them in mind (after all, it's probably safe to assume that 99% of all straight male Femshep players romanced Liara).

My personal issue with him is that he is too passive.  I have a hard time buying him as military.  I was underwhelmed by Kaiden for the same reason that I liked Ashley.  I would rather have a crew member who is passionate about something that I disagree with than one who isn't really passionate about anything.  My favorite characters always have strong opinions, and (usually) forceful personalities.  Kaiden had neither.

Though, as I said before, he wasn't nearly as useless in combat as Ashley was.  Still, since I rarely used either of them, I always let him die at Virmire.

i'm surprised so many people are defending jacob's AI comment. Tali was clearly rude to him and he was rude right back to her. its just a matter of interpretation, but it is crystal clear to me that its an insult. shrug

Thank you, I've just never got the "whiney" thing. I didn't think Carth was "whiney" either, just had some extremely frustrating trust issues, but that was me, I can see where people would find him "whiney", I just wasn't understanding where Kaidan was "whiney".

I'll have to respectfully disagree with Kaidan not having strong opinions, he was very Paragon, he stressed the idea of doing the 'right' thing. He gave the whole "cutting corners" speech/dialogue to emphasize that.

Jacob was just a down to Earth soldier doing his job. He knew his mission, he knew the risks, and he knew what he had to do. If that makes him boring I guess that's fair. However, he definitely needed more dialogue, I was surprised when he started giving me his "I'm good Shephard" aka I have nothing more left to tell you speech. So devs, for ME3 give us lot's of dialogue for characters!

Well, pretty much. But also, we never got to see into Jacobs pyschy. I mean, on his loyally mission, we find out not only is his dad still alive, he's set himself up as king with a harem of former crew - and how does Jacob react to this? "You where better off dead" and thats about it.

I mean, even Samara had a more emotive line after you kill Mornith - "What would you have me say, Shepard? I've just killed the bravest and smartest of my daughters. Have pity on a broken old warrior and let us go."

They were just bad characters, and thats highlighted by the fact that you can't hate them. I hated Ashley cos she was a total b*tch but at least that made her interesting. Carth and Kanye just didn't capture my interests at all.

I never hated Kaidan, I actually liked having someone relatively normal to chat with. I could not have cared less about what he was saying ("L2 implants blah blah blah some girl I had a crush on blah blah blah"), but he was a nice guy. The hissy fit on Horizon didn't win him any points but at least he apologized for it.

Ashley I only talked to for the sake of completion. I had no reservations whatsoever about blowing her up on Virmire. Didn't give it another thought.

I like both Kaidan and Jacob. I can see why people tend to think they're boring, but I find it somewhat refreshing to have well-adjusted characters that are all-around nice people. Granted, there are other (more interesting) characters out there, but my Shepards all enjoyed being friends with Kaidan and Jacob.

I do agree that FemShep's forced flirty tone was annoying, and I found it frustrating to be forced to truncate my conversations with him in order to avoid the romance. That's one thing in particular I really wish the developers had taken from the DA:O team - the parallel friendship paths. I thought my FemShep would be able to have a friendship with Thane, but then he called her "Siha" and I realized that even by picking the neutral options with him the romance was starting to form. At least with Jacob the neutral options led to the same "I'm good, Shepard" dialog that my MaleShep got.

Kaiden was boring yes. But that didn't bother me. I saw him as a good friend and soldier. He was just a "normal" person. And the others where not. They where aliens, and that intrests me. And ahsley hates aliens, that's also interesting.

With Jacob it was just the dialog that made him kind of boring. The only fun one was with "They need to put a bar in the next normandy" and he reacting on that.
