Kaidan and Jacob are not hated... they are just viewed as "boring".

The reason Jacob is viewed as boring is because he is the most natural and normal squadmate.

I never quite know what is meant by this.

Jacob has never struck me as the "average guy" he's professed to be on the forums. When I think average guy I think... I dunno, the show Chuck, Arthur Dent, Kenneth Donnelly, Ser Jory. Even Kaidan.

Jacob's got issues up the wazoo, he's not really normal or he'd be the guy you could small talk with. The only difference with Jacob is you don't really do anything with his issues. They're just... there, and they don't change.

Um, okay, breaking in to respond to the OP:

I think that finding Kaidan and Jacob boring simply is not taking the time to get to know either character. They may not be as "flashy" as Jack or Miranda or, heck, anything with boobs or an alien face, but they are quite interesting characters.

Jacob is a puzzle to me. I do not understand how he can be such a decent guy and yet join Cerberus. Sadly, my femshep tries to hump his leg whenever I go to talk to him, so I guess I'll never find out what makes him tick.

Kaidan is, flat out, the most nuanced character in the two games imo. I have played both games multiple times and it never fails to amaze me how subtle his characterization is. At times he comes off slightly dorky, awkward, newbish, even. Other times, he comes off as this confident, sarcastic badass. it REALLY depends on how Shep talks to him and who else talks to him also. around ashely and shepard, he's a little more outspoken and confident, as evidenced by his squaddie banter. around wrex, he sounds like a dork. get mad at him about giving you advice and he gets defensive, thank him and he's nice about it. heck, you can even convince him to be a renegade. he also ask shep about how she is doing all the time

sadly, little of this comes out with maleshep or a femshep avoiding a romance. kaidan only really shows his full personality if running a romance with him. that's unfortunate for getting a large amount of popularity for him, as again, he only really seems cool if the PC seeks him out.

i understand the idea here is to say "oh, they're not bad, just boring," but really, i would suggest that you talk to the characters and run multiple builds and talk to the characters again before concluding you don't like them

and finally, just because one or two people find them boring does not mean everyone does. personally, i think ALL the ME characters are great and really want to see them back in vol. 3

On Kaidan:  ^this^

On Jacob:  I just can't get past how femShep sounds when she talks to him.  Not his fault.  As one FF author wrote, there must be stuff in the ductwork of the armory that makes her sound like that.  Image IPB
I just can't get past that.  Plus, it would mean cheating on Kaidan which I just can't do.

Honestly I don't find others boring. Kaidan is really just kind of a normal guy. He also had one of the oddest traits of any character. He was over his past. He had come to terms with it and moved on. Sure he's a bit awkward and dorky at times but that was fine. That being said I left him behind to die. I honestly made this choice based upon practical choices. Ashley Williams can use a Sniper Rifle. Kaidan Alenko can use a pistol. Honestly anyone who can use a sniper in the first game (and second) is just lethal. Plus she had heavy armor and immunity, with her and Garrus nothing could touch us. Kaidan died a good death. I wish no one had to die, but I picked the person I'd rather fight a war with.

As for Jacob, he's alright. Personality wise he was rational and reasonable. I don't really care about Jacob much but I would never want him dead. He trusted me from step one and he deserves some respect for that. He'd follow orders from me and he's willing to quit Cerberus for me. He's a good guy and one that I don't have any strong emotions for. He has my respect, and he deserves his spot on my ship.

But honestly anyone who is a sniper in the games get my immediate attention. In my mind Zaeed, Garrus, Thane, and Legion are among the top squad mates. Followed rather closely by Grunt, Tali, Samara, and Kasumi. Honestly I think each game only had one character that was underwhelming in combat, in ME it was Kaiden and in ME 2 it was Jacob. Jacob's Barrier ability isn't nearly as good as Legion's or Grunt's considering those characters get +50% extra to their Shields and Health respectively from research. Pull is alright, but I like throw a bit more. Incendiary ammo is good, but I never liked relying on squad mates for ammo powers.

Maybe I don't really care about Jacob or Kaidan based on their somewhat "meh" personalities combined with their debatable combat performance. Who knows. When all is said and done I do happen to prefer Jacob to Kaidan. I guess that would partially explain my reasons for leaving him to die on Virmire. At least the man died a hero, I will honestly never forget Kaidan Alenko and his honorable service during my mission on Virmire.

I liked both Kaidan and Jacob. I did think Kaidan was a little muted and underplayed, and I'm always reminded of this conversation between him and Ashley in ME1. I really wish the writers had done more with that as the game progressed, and actually had Kaidan say something like that to Shepard during one of their discussions. It would have gone a long way towards making more people like him, I think.

I also think Kaidan, and all of the other ME1 squadmates, would have really benefited from the type of character-specific missions the squadmates got in ME2. A perfect mission for Kaidan would have been if they'd fleshed out the one with the L2 biotic terrorists and gave Kaidan a more personal connection to them. Maybe Shepard and Kaidan storm the freighter to rescue Chairman Burns, only to discover that Rahna, the girl Kaidan knew at BAaT, was leading the terrorists. Then, after the obligatory combat, you have to convince Kaidan to either arrest Rahna so she can be tried for her crimes and hopefully rehabilitated (Paragon), or kill her because she's too dangerous to be allowed to live (Renegade).

Ah, if only...

That is quite true, however Garrus's combo of Damping and Sabotage is more effective in my mind. Plus he had a sniper and combined with Ashley they can shred anything together. I'm not dissing Neural Shock since it is quite good, I just happen to like the tech combo better.

I'm going to have to agree with dialog options for FemShep. Just the way she speaks with Jacob bothered me. I would never be THAT forward. Subtle hints are fine, but outright, "Euw liek what euw see, Mister Taylor?!" is just not my style. Most female gamers like to relate to their character and their storyline. This is probably a good factor as to why the Jacob was so disliked.

I immediately dumped him and ran to Garrus. Though I felt Garrus's romance was more about sex than anything else. Kind of disappointing, as I liked him as a character in both games. Can't wait for the third installment to see where that goes.

I really REALLY like this idea. I was a bit disappointed when Kaidan only appeared for that bit of time. I would've really enjoyed getting to know his character better, and especially in this way. Shame it didn't happen. :[

Randy 1083 I agreed with a lot of what you said. Yes, Kaidan has let his past go, unlike others. And I followed that Link to some video dialogue I hadn't seen with him and Ashley at the Citadel. I need to explore his character more. :) And I would have loved more interaction with him on missions. I really did wexpect it to help me taking him with me on that L2 one, and was really disappointed when it didn't.

My first playthrough, and a lot of my second of ME1, I had Kaidan almost exclusively with me as he and Garrus, or Wrex, complimented me as a soldier. Must try the tip for his Neural Shock skill.

Currently I am playing both ME1 as a Vanguard and am using Tali a lot to boost my Tech skills rather than Kaidan, and in my ME2 playthrough I like having Grunt as soon as I get him. He is a bit of a loose cannon but with his shield boosts, I find him an awesome fighter. I take Garrus too for the combat heavy missions.

I never really understood the beef people had with Kaidan. Yeah, I tend to always let him die, but not because of my dislike of him. Ashley is my main romance in the series so Kaidan is essentially screwed by the story. But for the most part I found Kaidan pretty interesting.

Jacob is sort of Kaidan redone. The problem though while it's highly believable that Kaidan had actually dealt with majority of his issues, with Jacob it feels like he still has baggage but refuses to talk about it. Of course, like most things on the internet, people tend to "over-exaggerate" their reasoning for disliking a character, like hating on him for saying he doesn't want to force a talk.

I'm hoping in ME3 their is some type of mission to flesh out Jacob some more. it seemed like there was potential in ME2, so I hope Bioware doesn't abandon it just to appease all of his haters.

i would have enjoyed that very much. though i think rahna lacked the guts for it.

i do not understand why kaidan and jacob are seen as the same. jacob "doesn't know who he is" as jack tells us. kaidan is quite secure in himself. jacob is impatient enough with the alliance to leave them for cerberus in spite of cerberus' "checkered past" (his words, not mine). kaidan is alliance to the bone, would never think of joining cerberus - even with shep with them.  and jacob's reaction to going after the collectors is "looking forward to the action." kaidan's first comment about his first mission is "what about survivors, captain?"

truly, other than both being marines, Lieutenants, biotics, and human men, not at all the same.
