Kaidan and Jacob are not hated... they are just viewed as "boring".

And all that baggage with his father once we do his loyalty mission... no way he left that behind so quickly. He didn't deal with it at all. Even writing in that he'd had a conversation with Kelly about it would have helped.
Nopes, he is a totally different kettle of fish from Kaidan. I don't trust Jacob at all.

Um, okay, breaking in to respond to the OP:
I think that finding Kaidan and Jacob boring simply is not taking the time to get to know either character. They may not be as "flashy" as Jack or Miranda or, heck, anything with boobs or an alien face, but they are quite interesting characters.
Jacob is a puzzle to me. I do not understand how he can be such a decent guy and yet join Cerberus. Sadly, my femshep tries to hump his leg whenever I go to talk to him, so I guess I'll never find out what makes him tick.
Kaidan is, flat out, the most nuanced character in the two games imo. I have played both games multiple times and it never fails to amaze me how subtle his characterization is. At times he comes off slightly dorky, awkward, newbish, even. Other times, he comes off as this confident, sarcastic badass. it REALLY depends on how Shep talks to him and who else talks to him also. around ashely and shepard, he's a little more outspoken and confident, as evidenced by his squaddie banter. around wrex, he sounds like a dork. get mad at him about giving you advice and he gets defensive, thank him and he's nice about it. heck, you can even convince him to be a renegade. he also ask shep about how she is doing all the time
sadly, little of this comes out with maleshep or a femshep avoiding a romance. kaidan only really shows his full personality if running a romance with him. that's unfortunate for getting a large amount of popularity for him, as again, he only really seems cool if the PC seeks him out.
i understand the idea here is to say "oh, they're not bad, just boring," but really, i would suggest that you talk to the characters and run multiple builds and talk to the characters again before concluding you don't like them
and finally, just because one or two people find them boring does not mean everyone does. personally, i think ALL the ME characters are great and really want to see them back in vol. 3
as a fellow Kaidanite, I agree on that.
Regarding Jacob....I went through three different stages with that guy. First I thought he was okayish, then I just didn't mind him, in the end, I just ended up not liking him. Maybe my point of view changes once I finish my current dudeshep PT.

But Jacob? Wow I could not get myself to like Jacob at all, he seemed really static and flat to me. Everything about him past the first level just got on my nerves.

Jacob has come to grow on me a bit as well, but not as an LI. He's allright as a team member, and has a backstory that absolutely needed to be explored in ME2 but wasn't (in favor of *yet another* family problem, as if there weren't enough of those already), but parts of his romance (admittedly not *only* on his part), particular in the first and the last scene, are so bad they make me cringe. Wasted potential, unfortunately.

But I never cared much for Jacob as a LI or otherwise

Yeah, well, I bet that's why he's disliked. Part of the reason, at least.Nightwriter wrote...

The reason Jacob is viewed as boring is because he is the most natural and normal squadmate.
I never quite know what is meant by this.
Jacob has never struck me as the "average guy" he's professed to be on the forums. When I think average guy I think... I dunno, the show Chuck, Arthur Dent, Kenneth Donnelly, Ser Jory. Even Kaidan.
Jacob's got issues up the wazoo, he's not really normal or he'd be the guy you could small talk with. The only difference with Jacob is you don't really do anything with his issues. They're just... there, and they don't change.

Granted it took me while for Jacob to warm up to, but I'm cool with him now. My only issue with him is that he comes off as a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to Cerberus. "I don't like what Cerberus does sometimes and I don't like the Alliance, but I like what Cerberus is doing now."

I don't think I've spent enough time talking to Jacob to form an opinion one way or the other, so I'll take him as my main squadmate when I run my Adept through ME2.
Yay for the humans!
