First off let me just say this is NOT a troll thread and I am not sexist I just want to hear people thoughts on topic.

If Commander Shepard was a NPC what do you think he would be a male or female?

I for one see his role as a male from ME1 his actions and Role just seem like a male to me. When I see female Shepard's, they seem to be missing something they just don’t seem to have the same impact as the male Shepard does. In my opinionImage IPB

But BioWare has continually advertised male Shep and, as a result, our brains are hardwired to think of their Shepard.

However, like many people who are devoted to their Sheps, I'm sure it will vary. After ME1 and ME2, you ask me to describe Shepard and he looks a lot like Captain America (for whom my Shepard's face is based off of). I'm sure people who's canon Shep is femShep would picture their femShep.

That maybe true, But Bioware must of plan for Shepard to be a male like you said they advertised as a male and default is a male so you would think the interaction is Primary more male like. Kind of weird to see a female shepard pick up joker and throw him into the escape pod. Image IPB

I used male for my good/bad guy playthroughs but when trying the neutral path I went for female, found a really good look for her that fitted a military "mission first, emotions later and take the advantages you get offered(the action you get during certain scenes).

What I mean is that I create my characters based on a concept, not on what is the ultimate build.

EDIT: I think it depends on what you think Shepard is like as character. For that military, high ranked officer I think female fitts better with voice and movement. But for the frontline soldier type I think male fitts more.

lol have to go female purely because the VO actor for Male Shep has a flat monotone voice... gods he needs acting lessons.

I can't picture Shepard as any other than my main. I've played a few different ones, both male and female. In my mind, Shepard as a woman just seems to 'fit'.

I think it depends on what your Shepard was on your first play through. My first character is my main character because I just can't see Shepard any other way after that.

Male Shep has the reach, but FemShep has fexibility :D

I played with female becouse Jennifer Hale. Tried to play with the guy but just can't stand it. "Use some tone in that woice dammit! Like you really interested, care, feel something."
And of course the ass I have to see for hours :DDDD

As military, I more like a Jack O'Neill like hero than a Sergeant 'sir, yes, sir' **** soldier. He can break my bone, sure, but never could earn my trust and respect.

As a character itself. I really think it doesn't matter. Of course a women would work differently, less raw strength more finesse. In the world of firearms, biotics, tech and brain, the physical advantage or stregth of a man is not so important.
And yes, I believe that a women can be a good leader who earn loyality with her decisions, not just those who want to screw her...
So men and women are really equal.
But it's seems very much that Bioware sees the male Shepard as canon (in the whole overgrown promo I never seen a video with femShep :( )

I've never played Shepard as a male just because I'm a big Jennifer Hale fanboy. So I guess Shepard is a woman to me. I usually play men in my rpgs though, so I can see how Shepard could be iconically male for most.

I played as both, and I have to say that I prefer female mostly due to the voice acting

Both, though as a female myself my main Shepard is female. She's the one I feel is most important.

Not really. I doubt most people use the default Shep anyway. He's become more of a figure-head to advertise ME2 than he ever was for ME1. When I think of Shep I think of my main character. There should never be a "cannon" for ME, especially not with the main character. The books do an amazing job of avoiding interupting any player's view of their own personal universe in this way. It should stay like that.

When I play MaleShep, it's always the default face. I can't, for the life of me, make a normal looking MaleShep. I think my last one looked more like a Batarian than anything else. I usually run around with FemSheps though, and it's not a sexy-thing, but if I do have to stare at an ass for 30+ hours, might as well come with hips.

At least for me, the shep that I've played with in ME1 and now through 2 is how shepard is for me (although I did tweak the face a bit). I have a hard time getting into my friend's shepard for example when I play at his house. I'm not sure if its like this for a lot of people too; becoming attached to the shepard you choose as your default through the series.

Shepard definitely works better as a male, because of what he is and what he does for a living.

I tried to role a FemShep several times, but I always gave up because I didn't find her to be as realistic as the male Shepard, from both an aesthetic as well as a roleplaying perspective.

FemShep looks like a wet noodle. There is no way a woman that small could bear the weight of that armor and those guns..

And a lot of people take pride in how "pretty" their FemSheps are... Most look more like Space Barbies than a hardened Special Forces Marine, which just detroys immersion if you ask me.

If you were asking from someone else's point of view like it we werent shepard he would be a male NPC because thats what they created first as you can tell the male shepard face had a little more time put into it, also he is on the cover of both games.

I don't even think I could change Shepard's appearance anymore, let alone gender.
To me Shepard has the voice of Jennifer Hale and now looks like this: mxmediahost.com/img3/me2-femshep1.jpg

Her class, hairstyle and paragon/renegade leanings might change on subsequent play throughs, but otherwise she stays the same.
I've tried starting a male Shepard a couple of times, but never got past the first hour (and that went for ME1 as well for that matter). It just felt... wrong.

I would have to agree with those referring to the voice actors. The male Shep is just terrible. There's little to no emotion in his vocals. Female Shepard all the way.

As far as aesthetics and character design are concerned, there are a lot of ugly female Shepards out there. At any rate, aside from blood splatters and messed up hair, there's no reason a female avatar can't still look good while dishing out punishment.

I hate this as well. Shepard should like like a hardened marine commander, not Barbie In Space. My Shepard was my first, and she was designed from the start to seem rugged and have a very square and masculine jaw, yet still remain attractive.

I mean, I think my Shepard is attractive and beautiful, but in a hardened, down to buisness way.

No offense is meant to the creator of this Shepard, but it just doesn't seem right.

No emotion?

Shepard is a Marine, not some theatre actor, so what do you expect?

Yeah, thats exactly what I was talking about..

That Shepard looks like she belongs on a runway carrying handbags, and not on a battlefield carrying big ass guns..

And the makeup is another thing which I find hilarious as well.

At first I didn't like the makeup options either. I thought to myself, "How does a Special-Ops-Marine-Spectre have time to apply makeup while saving the galaxy?"

However, after playing in the character creatore I came up with, "Well, consdering we're perfecting the use of staining to have a perminante make-up effect now, I'll just pretend it's a common thing in the 22nd century. *Applies dark lipstain and eyelinear*"

Heh.
