Far as playing as,I've got 2 of each now.
It started out with a female renegade/indifferent vanguard in ME 1,consider her the main.
Then a female paragon infiltrator in ME 1,waiting for Kasumi to get that going in ME 2.
Then a full male renegade engineer in ME1 that I was supposed to have just him and Miranda live but ended up with Garrus and Zaeed too.
Now a I don't care Vin Diesel vanguard in ME 2 for an insanity playthrough since it's apprently better to start at level 1 + I wanted to use the DLC shotgun as I have no more missions to use it with my female one.
I almost always go with a female when given the choice because usually there's no choice and it's a guy.
Far as real life female soliders Violette Szabo has her own game. How many real life male soliders have their own game? Also one. Her game is a lot better.

Custom MaleSheps are ugly. Custom FemSheps are somewhat better, but I have yet to find a FemShep I like.
Edit: Scrap that last part, I HAVE seen a pretty looking FemShep on the forums. I believe it was Mystranna's...

Violette Szabo wasn't a soldier.. She was a spy, an infiltrator and a saboteur...
Either way though, she was a very brave and courageous woman indeed.

Overall, I prefer MaleShep to play. Mainly because I can get into the character more, and I have become attached to my character. This is probably the case for everyone's character.

Male Shep falls into that generic bald prison break hero who kicks arse and so on and on. Why they figure for both DA:O and ME the canon role has to be male is beyond me.

But when he yells Tali's name while she's falling in the launch trailer gets me every time.
I sincerely have a hard time getting a female Shepard seriously. Maybe it would have worked in the first one, but the second ME requires more grunt work than anything.
Cheers!

Actually I was talking to The JoeMan specifically. His argument was "FemShep shouldn't even exist because Shepard is a good soldier."
The argument of "men are generally stronger than women" is valid. The statement "I think of Shepard as male because men are generally stronger and more inclined to military service" is valid. The assertion "FemShep makes no sense because women are the smaller and weaker sex" is silly. I'm serious; go back and read the comment. It's that bad.
I honestly don't see anything wrong with my comment. It's not silly or sexist. It simply is. You said yourself "men are generally stronger than women". If one is stronger than the other is weaker. The maximum physical ability of a male is greater than that of a female. That's all I'm saying.
For what it's worth, I could see using a femshep for an adept or engineer since they are based less on physical prowess and more on skills....
My issue is this. If they don't give us a femshep option than we could have twice as many armour pieces, character customization options and animations. Hell, they could even have given us a second voice option so everyone who likes to complain about Mark Meer's voice could be satisfied.

Shepard definitely works better as a male, because of what he is and what he does for a living.
I tried to role a FemShep several times, but I always gave up because I didn't find her to be as realistic as the male Shepard, from both an aesthetic as well as a roleplaying perspective.
FemShep looks like a wet noodle. There is no way a woman that small could bear the weight of that armor and those guns..
And a lot of people take pride in how "pretty" their FemSheps are... Most look more like Space Barbies than a hardened Special Forces Marine, which just detroys immersion if you ask me.
i like my femshep, and i dont find it unrealistic, my shep is ok to look at and she wore those scars with pride in ME1

Shepard is male. I won't make any friends here but I honestly don't think we should be given the option for a female Shepard. It makes no sense that the best soldier humanity has to offer would be from the smaller and weaker sex. It didn't bother me so much in ME1 because I could just ignore it all together but in ME2 there is so much focus on these damned romance options that it is painfully obvious that, by including a female option, male Shepard is suffering for it. The most glaring example is with Garrus. I do all of these things for him we've got all this history but whenever I go to talk to him, hoping to catch up on old times, he's too busy recalibrating the damn guns.
To answer the question there is no right or wrong gender for Shepard, its up to the player to decide what gender their Shepard will be.
Why do you think Bioware goes out of their way to not mention Shepard's gender in the comics/books etc.

So female
soldiers can't be pretty? Not nice. Not nice. You have clealry a
stereotype of a marine commander. Can't blame you for that everyone has some, but it is just
not fair for women in military. Just like female programmers - pretty
or attractive =/= computer geek. I
think you and I had discussion over this topic on the old forum. About women in military
As for a topic. I play as a
female. VA is better IMO and it is natural for me as I am a female.
Generally it is more realistic for you to play manShep because men are stronger, more incline to military duty etc. etc. Ok. Nothing worng with that, personal taste. But as someone already ( very wisely) stated it is also about personality and leadreship skills. Men and women can be equally good leaders. Being a commander or military leader is not about "Look how much I can carry. Look at this muscles!".
someones comment about exclude femShep, because it is ruining play for a menShep is so stupid, that I won't even bother to wrote something more except: *facepalm*

I'm in this boat. I've played through as a female Shepard and didn't really notice any dramatic difference between Meer's performance and Hale's performance. Hale sounds kind of stuffy as Shepard compared to her other work, like she's making her voice sound deeper.Comrade Bork wrote...
Many people have stated they don't like Mark Meer's voice acting, while stating that Jennifer Hale is the voice of God. I have to disagree. I prefer MaleSheps' voice over FemShep's. Hale's voice acting is good, but I feel Meer's is better.
As far as who I play, I go with the standard Van der Loo Shepard. Most detailed, realistic face.

Did you ever feel that many of femshep's lines were forced? It seemed like she was trying too hard.

Yes I don't get this either, Hale has done plenty of roles where she's all over the place (such as cartoons) and then it comes to this and it sounds like she's taking a dump all the time, or lying in bed after being woken up by her kids.

I think that should answer your question! Lol. And I think Jennifer Hale did a stellar job on ME1 and ME2. Some lines DO sound forced, but for the most part...not in my opinion.

That's not very nice. In the future you should focus on being a nicer person.
Bioware goes out of their way not to mention Shepard's gender in comics because they give us the option. That should be obvious to everybody. If they didn't give us the option than they wouldn't have to tippy toe around the subject of his gender all the time. Whatever though...they're not going to change it now. Hopefully the next installment doesn't have so many romance options so it won't be as noticeable that things are missing from male Shepard's story.

It's like having to choose between Johnny Depp or Paul Walker for a role. No contest.
