Every alien is more or less humanoid (with a couple of exceptions)

At least two exceptions, possibly four - we've yet to see the raloi and volus may just use humanoid suits for convenience when interacting with humanoid species.

speaks english

Bzzzzzt! Sadly, the codex entry on translation only comes with BDtS

have near-human cultures and habits

...haven't read much on the salarians, I take it? And other than that, I have a hard time coming up with cultural traits that are both never expressed on Earth and not just weird for the sake of weird.

Err, not all of them.

I never argued it wasn't all perfectly logical within the confines of the ME universe, only that it all flies in the face of real-world logic/studies/ect, since people think they should be applied to some aspects of the game and not others. I actually think the idea the Protheans and/or Reapers impacted the evolutionary paths of most or all of the races is an interresting and heavily implied one - it'd explain the simularities. Well some of them.

Apologies for not having read every codex in the game, I don't know everything about ME, I admit. ;) Just my 2 copper. Those were just examples, I'm sure there are many better ones. Those just came to mind, and they're hardly the oddest things in the game *cough*Asari mating*cough*. All of this said, I love ME I wouldn't change a thing. You may have inspired me to read some more in-game codexes though.:)

You guys, there are fewer female soldiers in the alliance military. I dont see what the problem is. femshep is just extremely good.

Due to the variable gravities on planets that space marines are likely to fight on there is no real reason to bring things like strength or the ability to carry things around into question. The vast majority of planets would either be easy enough for any human to move stuff around on or so hard that even the strongest human would have trouble.

The guns generate their own mass effect field when they fire the projectile. Is it too hard to believe that little mass effect fields could not be all over the place making heavier equipment lighter or whatever? Strength obviously would always be a factor in combat, but compared to say, a krogan, is a strong human vs a weaker human really anything but weak compared to it?

Combat in the future is more about knowing what you are doing.

You dont need some natural tendency towards aggression due to the level of some hormone to act aggressively if you are doing so not because you are just running around blindly aggressive but because you know the proper pace and timing of the situation and see a weakness to exploit.

Shepard wouldn't be as good as he/she is if not for very good situational awareness and knowing how to handle situations. I see shepard as a calm tactician on the battlefield regardless of anything else.

You may argue that femshep has some sort of inherent disadvantage, and fine. but look at it like this, there can only be female or male shepard in the game. In the universe that there is a male shepard, male shepard is able to do all the things that he does in the game. In the universe that there is a female shepard, female shepard is able to do those exact same things in the game.

Would female shepard have been even more powerful in the mirror universe she lives in if she had been a male also? Maybe. But both are of equal power. If anything it just makes female shepard even more badass.

There are plenty of strong female protagonists in science fiction. I've certainly never heard anyone criticize Aliens on the grounds that Ripley was an unrealistic character.

This is not to say that one Shep is better than the other, I just think it's silly that femShep's fans have to defend her very existence.

Being a male I'm more partial to male Shep because of the female LI's but Femshep is equally amazing and has some extra dialogue options due to being a woman. As for voice actors they have their strengths (Meer is better as Paragon Hale is better at Renegade) Personally they should be saving the world at the same time so that a the reapers are doubly screwed.=D

I like MaleShep better in ME and ME2 because although Jennifer Hale is one of the best voice actresses out there right now, in my opinion she did a terrible job in both Mass Effect games as FemShep. Her range was from slightly constipated to just pissed off. MaleShep has a bit more range in his VO.

And I have to disagree. I found his voice rather flat most of the time. Like he was reading a manual or something. While Hales VO work I found a lot better. Well except when it came to talking to Jacob most of the time. But that's just differences in opinion.

Meh, to each his own I guess. The thing that helps me about maleshep's voice is that his expression is clearer, and that he expresses himself in a sound similar to my own, and that he has a neutral voice when necessary instead of always hamming it up. I felt like Jennifer Hale was overdoing it, and I kinda got turned off of femshep because of that. Again, to each his own and I respect and thank you for disagreeing with me with civility.

I play as a male shep. In other games I routinely play as female, but for some reason I just can't in ME, and I can't put my finger on it, maybe I just get more into the male character (which makes sense, I'm male), but I think voice acting plays a part as well.

In ME1 I though Hale was much better than Meer, but I picked a male when I started, and did default face, I just wanted to play the game. In ME2 I tried playing as a female renegade but I couldn't do it. In ME2 I think Meer got a lot better, and Hale stayed kind of the same, but others described it perfectly. Hale's voice (especially in the second) sounds like a mother that just got home after a difficult day of work and now has to put up with annoying kids.

I like Hale in her other work, but I just couldn't get into her in ME. But beyond that, I'm not fully sure why I prefer male shep.

Isnt that the point though? In ME2 you have already saved the entire galaxy once, you had some organization spend what was probably more than the net worth of an entire planet to bring you back. You have the best everything. So there is no real sense of a struggle or a challenge. You are taking down the collectors.

But at the same time most people wont even believe that the galaxy was/still is under threat.

The big threat is still to come really. What you do in ME2 is really just a minor action.

The largest threat and challenge that needs overcoming during the time span of ME2 is not what you need to fight. Its not the enemies you are up against or the collectors or the reapers, its the council, the alliance, the quarian flotilla, even the krogans. They are all caught up in politics.

What is happening with the geth even? They are at conflict with themselves.

The theme of ME2 is internal conflict of the various political and cultural organizations/bureaucracies and their unwillingness to acknowledge the reaper threat. All during this time shepard goes and tries to stop

So thats exactly what shepard needs to be right now. Annoyed.

Its like that asari matriarch bartender. Shepard has perspective that most lack.

I can not understand why some people think that Shepard could never be a woman due to women being physically weaker than men. Make biotic Shepard and the problem is solved. Biotics beats muscles any day

Just a thought, but do the novels mention Shepard at all, and if so, do they specify gender? I know the comics make a point of not saying one way or the other.

No, but Bioware has marketed Shep as male in all its trailers. That said, Prima Games, the people who make the strategy guides, play as a Femshep, so its kinda teases and confuses people. I stick to my motto... "Play as whatever the (insert expletive here) you want."

PS: they shouldn't even mention Shep in the movie. Who agrees with me?

I play Shep as a man because society has kind of trained me up to believe that men are better at fighting and saving the day than women are. Hey, I'm just admitting what I have been conditioned to know, doesn't mean I like it.

I also play ManShep because I like his voice a lot more than Hale's. I don't find him monotone. I actually don't really like Hale's inflections that much, they seem overly sarcastic and snarrky even for the neutral and paragon options.

Mark Meer is an absolutely godawful voice actor. I'd rather jam ice picks into my ears than play as a character with such a poorly done voice. Jennifer Hale's vastly superior voice work is one of many reasons why my Shepard is and always will be female.

I dunno, but I'd like to hear Nolan North give a try to voice-act MaleShep. That man is THE BEST out there right now.

Shepard is male. I won't make any friends here but I honestly don't think we should be given the option for a female Shepard. It makes no sense that the best soldier humanity has to offer would be from the smaller and weaker sex. It didn't bother me so much in ME1 because I could just ignore it all together but in ME2 there is so much focus on these damned romance options that it is painfully obvious that, by including a female option, male Shepard is suffering for it. The most glaring example is with Garrus. I do all of these things for him we've got all this history but whenever I go to talk to him, hoping to catch up on old times, he's too busy recalibrating the damn guns.

In a far-future world of genetic enhancements, cybernetics, biotics, power armor, force fields, and the mass effect itself, "small and weaker" goes from the present-day chauvanism with a grain of truth, to absolutely meaningless.

I'm a woman. Seemed logical to play as a femShep. I adore my first Shep. Importing her into ME2 almost made me cry *g* I've grown so fond of her. I played as a paragon which is pretty close to how I would act in her shoes (ignoring the fact that I'd never become a soldier in the first place). Mass Effect has offered the most personalized playing experience I've ever come across. And that's largely due to customization and dialogue choices, even though your choices are fairly limited and have little impact on the storyline for about 90% of the game.

For me, Shep will always be a woman. But it was designed for a male Shep and it shows a lot. But BW did a good job making the game attractive for female gamers.

I played with a male paragon, too. Felt kinda weird. I had already identified with the femShep.

I will start anew with a renegade male next. And romance Ash, even though I don't like her at all.

Funny, I thought the female voice fit the paragon perfectly. I love her voice, by the way. Good fit for my femShep's face, too. I imagine if you create an older Shep, that voice might be odd. The male voice is ok. Nothing special. I dig Garrus' voice!

My main Shep is a female, and I just can't play as a male. My brother plays as a dude, and the voice and face seems fine to me, but for some reason I cannot bring myself to play as a male. I think this whole thread is a bit pointless. ME is all about customization and preferences. And it's supposed to be a game! We're supposed to be having fun. I don't think Bioware meant for us to be caught up in a discussion like this when they made dual genders. I also just wanted to say that playing as a female is a big deal for me. The only other time I've gotten to play a girl was in Pokemon (:P), and I think it's safe to say that none of the guys that have posted here have been forced to play a female character in a decent video game.

I hope I've managed to keep my post civil, some of you guys are really going at each other!

Always play as the male shep because it makes me easier to role play. I dunno, just playing as FemShep kills the immersion for me personally.

Personally I usually play a male Shepard as I can more easily picture Shepard as a male.

Though on my last playthrough of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 I played a female Shepard for the variety and didn't find anything wrong with her, the romance options for female Shepard were certainly more fun than the Liara/Ashley choice male Shepard had in the first game. I tried the Ashley romance once and absolutely hated it - Ashley's borderline xenophobia just rubs me up the wrong way, which is why I almost always leave her to die on Virmire.

At the end of the day though I prefer a male Shepard but each player has their own preferences and we should respect that.

That's so true! There are few (rpg) games with female leads. Come to think of it, the only one that comes to my mind is Final Fantasy X-2 and that game was horrible! All the other games have male leads, even when the guy isn't even the hero, like in Final Fantasy XII.
If we get a female heroine it's games like Tomb Raider or Bayonetta. And these sexist games are not designed for female players.

So, thank you BW for Mass Effect :0)
