@gr00grams: Your argueing the wrong point - its not about making a copy of the things that made ME(the trilogy) great as a MMO(anyone who thinks its possible is seriously delusional). ME is about story, yes, but MMOs are about social interactions. Different people like different things and some people like mulitple things. Playing the ME MMO wouldn't necessarly be about a set story, but perhaps about making your own stories with your friends. That's personal perspective, of course.

I would absolutely LOVE Mass Effect as a MMO.

There. I said it.

I'd still definitely want it as a single player experience as well, and frankly wouldn't be put off at all if Mass Effect stayed perpetually a single player experience.  But folks - don't get pigeonholed into pre-conceptions of what a MMO *has* to be.

For example - when I think of a Mass Effect MMO... I see people going through dialogue and choices and everything else - congregating in the Citadel, Ilium, Tuchanka, etc..

For combat - I see people getting together in bands of 3 to 8 players - and instead of the current experience we have where we're always stuck with two VI squadmates (yup, not gonna say AI :P), your teammates are your fellow players.  I could see cooperative missions, with gameplay like Army of Two or Gears of War cooperative campaigns.

There are already games like MAG out there that's essentially a MMO shooter, why not a version of Mass Effect with a similar model?

I been a fan of Warcraft 1 when it came out in the 90s, been a fan of 2, and been a fan of 3. When the MMO came out I never played it. Good and well I suppose, I dont expect to ever play warcraft games. If they made Mass Effect mmo after me3 then ME3 will be my last game. Its a little depressing because I dont think they ever made a single player game after a MMO came out.

I like the idea of co-op campaigns though

This is one point I will agree with - I always was saddened by the fact that Warcraft ended with its MMO.  The game itself is okay, i guess(I played for a few months and got bored when all I had left to do was grind for teir gear in the exact same dungeons over and over again), but I want another RTS in the Warcraft universe . . .

It doesn't have to be this way, of course, I'd prefer even if they did make a ME MMO, that they continue to make other singe-player games in the same universe.

I agree, I think when most people push the "hate" button on this concept they're only thinking of what they know, and not looking at how things could possibly change, which is what I'm talking about.
A Mass Effect MMO, staged some time after the final game (whenever that is) that lays down a general story about the universe and then kinda lets the players roll with it would be a good thing.  Have a few major events that some players could shape and actually become heroes in thier own right.  I mean Shepard as good as he/she is stumbled upon Saren and the Reapers.  And that's where the story's seed of greatness is sown, it's not instantly assumed the Shepard is destined for this task, he/she got pulled into something big and has a cajones to not only fight back, but win and keep sticking it to 'em 'till the end
It'd be difficult, maybe even impossible by today's standards but can you imagine a MMO universe where things like that can happen?  No grouping around the same NPC who hands out a scripted mission, I mean in some cases that could work, hiring bounty hunters or resource miners and such.  But there could be a few precious gems out there that are first come first serve, enhancing the players desire to explore and interact with this vast and interesting universe, encouraging them to actually look for adventure, craft a story and enjoy the ride along the way.  MEO wouldn't be for those people who like to just sit and push buttons all day, and feel empowered by pwning n00bs in PVP and selling credits and characters to poor saps who don't have time to play but refuse to quit.  In my vision it would be for those people who want not only the fun of a good story, but the unpredictability that comes from playing with others and developing relationships, even if they're only online.
WoW set the stage, but no one has yet to really innovate, and I'd like to think that Mass Effect with it not only unique but believeable setting and BioWare's penchant for great storytelling would be the winning combination

And that is why
It Would Work, IMHO

For having played WoW for a few years, I know first hand that a MMO kills a series, especially a series with an amazing storyline. You have to constantly make up stuff just to keep the life span going on. Absolutely ruins the story and you get do the same stuff over and over again for loot that will get replaced in a few months anyway. With all the crap that Blizz made up just to keep that game going started getting more and more painful over time. Not to mention to impossibility that is balancing classes. WoW has proved what MMO's can do a storyline. Bioware may be amazin', but I figure that they already know that it will ruin the Mass Effect Universe. The same goes for Dragon Age too.

Horrible idea, as all mmos are inherently horrible.

A Mass Effect MMO could definitely work, and by work I mean make a lot of money. The thing is, do you really wan't the franchise to focus on an MMO, or the creation of new singleplayer games? We pretty much know that if an MMO comes out we likely are done with any singleplayer releases for the franchise right? Unless the MMO sucks so badly.

If there was an MMO though how would it work? Your idea of spliting the council races like that just seems way too dumb. Like really they would just split like that? Why? I don't really see a reason for it. To be honest the only likely split from the council I could fathom would be Humans splintering off, which I doubt would happen just because humanity would know that would be a dumb decision.

The thing is though, do you need to have "factions" per-say? Why not have an MMO where there is on specific faction? You simply pick a race, and to some extent a profession. From there you can do what you wan't as long as it fits within the scope of your races possible roles (eg. if you wan't to work for C-sec then you can work your way there, if you'd rather be an outlaw merc pirate in Omega than go for it, but your race will restrict certain elements = batarians can't join blood pack only blue suns merc group, etc, etc)

I Think people are just tired of almost every game ever created having people say "This would make a great MMO, derp".

Sure, a Mass Effect MMO could work...do we really need it though?
