I honestly think the cel shaded graphics will hurt borderlands, not from an rpg perspective, but it'll just take away from the "awe" factor of the game and people just can't take it serious, at least not being able to take it serious as much as dragon age.

Dragon age origins, on the other hand, has no weaknesses.  It has to be rpg of the year and will probably win most of the "best rpg" awards, and maybe some goty awards.  I hope g4tv's xplay gives it at least rpg of the year.

Maybe we should, you know, PLAY them first? So far Demons Souls is the best RPG this year, IMO.

Every game has weaknesses and as much as it hurts me to say this as a Bioware fanboy even Dragon Age will have.
Anyway I think you forgot about Mass Effect 2. Image IPB

Edit: forgot it comes out in 2010.

Mmh I'm totally looking for DA:O to win the contest, Borderlands does not get my attention, but also I think I should try Demon's Souls ,it looks really good with that dark and creepy environments.

Lucky that Bioshock 2 got pushed back to next year. I wonder who will win out between Bioshock 2 and ME 2 in 2010.

Since RPG's that win the best of the year rewards are rarely the best (or even an RPG), I wouldn't mind Bioshock 2 winning.

Dragon age will win, or the fabric of the space time reality will fold in unto itself and shatter our dreams into a myriad of tiny splintered particls of the real.

Divine Divinity has a sequel in Europe already and is due out next year, if Divinity II is a faithful sequel to its precessor it should be listed up there too.

I can't predict who will win what but it's not hard to know who won't win what...

DA:O would not win best graphic for sure
No way in the world borderland could win best story.
Demon Soul will not win best replay value or best voice acting or character design.
Divinity II will not win best main theme track.

Too early to talk about this yet. I suggest we delay this discussion until we have played the games.

The best RPGs this year have been Drakensang and Risen. Divine Divinity II came out in Europe and I've heard good thing about it from my Austrian friends (long live the evil empire!) but don't think it will hit stateside until next year.

The Risen control scheme is vexing. The forced double tap to dodge is more like a fighting game than a proper RPG. Then there's the fact that your character is an idiot. In certain games, like Silent Hill 2, this works perfectly well. Not so much in something like Risen. It also doesn't help that I want to kill everyone on the island.

Am I the only person who likes cell-shaded graphics? Done right, they are effin' beautiful, more so than stylistic or realistic graphics.

I agree that we'll have to play them first to know. So far, the best RPG that came out this year is Drakensang. I expect DA: O will be better though.

As for Borderlands, is that even really an RPG? From what I've read about it, it seems to be much more a FPS with some character advancement and some choice, kind of like Bioshock.

It rather made me laugh that people considered Bioshock an RPG when the only roleplaying you can do in that game consists in choosing to kill little girls or not. >.<

I know for a fact the Demon Souls wont win the "RPG of the year" in the EU.

Bordelands is just a shooter with rpg elements, so I highly doubt it will be the rpg of the year.

DAO = pure RPG and in my eyes the best this year, so I wouldnt be suprised if it will win the "RPG of the year" award in the EU.

Hmmm... reviewing the year in RPGs:

I loved Risen, and would totally recommend it to Gothic fans, but there is almost nothing innovative about it. I have never seen a game engine/structure/concept/hero/world as little changed as this one is relative to Gothic 1-3. Even if you are in the group that thinks that series is the best ever, IMO there is still room for progress. And the ending sucks.

Drakensang has some nice bits, but it is too zoned, and too linear, and there is far too much in it which is straight pencil-and-paper mechanics imported into the CRPG for no apparent reason. Like having to wait and watch while your saving rolls play out in real time. Wtf?

As far as upcoming games go, last I saw, Divinity 2 was due in the US in December, so it might just make it.

The other one coming out is Torchlight, 27th of this month. That's an ARPG and at twenty bucks it's not in the premium marketplace, but it COULD be a sleeper hit. There are certainly people who think it will be (with all the Diablo vets it has on board).

Overall I think DA:O has a good chance, but as several have said, we'll have to play it first ;) There's always the potential for game-breaking bugs on release... and judging from the issues with the character creator, I can't see I'd be surprised :P

Cell-shaded graphics are stylistic, though they're not actually cell-shaded. And yes, I like them.

But RPGs that came out in Europe don't care about you, so we're back to square one.

All of the RPGs mentioned in this thread have come out in the US, or will do so. There are some excellent games being made in Europe these days; if you're missing em, you're missing out.

As for "Dragon age origins, on the other hand, has no weaknesses"... wait till you play it :P There's no way to judge game quality until you find out just how many bugs didn't get picked up in beta testing, and how character development and balance work relative to enemy strength as the game proceeds.

I know quite a few serious gamers, actually, who are already put off by the fact that the marketing has focused so heavily on boobs and blood. Not because they're prudes, but because they're grownups, and that focus makes it look like the game was designed for angry horny boys.
