The Rpg of the Year Award will go to Borderlands or Dragon Age Origins. This is a fact

please only mention rpgs that come out in the us.....i really don't care about rpgs that came out in europe

All of the RPGs mentioned in this thread have come out in the US, or will do so. There are some excellent games being made in Europe these days; if you're missing em, you're missing out.

As for "Dragon age origins, on the other hand, has no weaknesses"... wait till you play it :P

Borderlands is a shooter game at its core, which "technically" does have some RPG elements, barely. Regardless, it is ridiculous to believe that Borderlands would win RPG of the year. Appalling!

I know quite a few serious gamers, actually, who are already put off by the fact that the marketing has focused so heavily on boobs and blood. Not because they're prudes, but because they're grownups, and that focus makes it look like the game was designed for angry horny boys

I think Bioware's marketing department is taking serious RPG fans a little for granted, they probably think we'll buy the game anyway. So they've decided to focus on trying to get new consumers with their advertising.
They might be right, but i'll agree it can be slightly annoying.

I've read reviews about Divinity 2, and they seem promising, since the biggest flaw about the game according to the French version of PC Gamer is too high difficulty, which is no flaw imho Posted Image.
Plus you seem to get to play as a dragon after a while. Posted Image

On the other hand, they did give DA: O 95% compared to Divinity 2's 85% and Risen's 88%. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

the Marketing for a game should not affect intelligent people's decision to buy a game, Marketing is always a sketchy business, and most of the time it has no bearing on any of the actual gameplay.

For instance, remember Fable 1 and Fable 2's advertising and marketing? they made it sound like you could do "anything" like watch tree's grow in real time or something ridiculous. Of course those games are extremely limited in what you could ACTUALLY do, so not buying a game based on certain trailers or marketing techniques is quite frankly a little ridiculous.

Borderlands is an FPS first and foremost. It would be a travesty if it won any RPG awards. I think RPG of the Year comes down to Demon's Soul or DAO.

bioware is the king of RPGs. dragon age even wins over borderlands on DAO weakest point, the graphics. next year Mass effect will win, and the year after that... maybe another bioware title?

Is it not possible to role play with shooter-like action? The combat isn't RP'd, but then, where are you going to draw the line for combat being role-play or not? I've played games where combat was *really* RP, as in, you had to describe exactly what you were doing as a story. None of this newfangled "stat" stuff where the combat has nothing to do with RP. So... BG2 isn't an RPG!

If Borderlands is allowed to call itself an RPG, then Left 4 Dead 2 is an RPG as well and should get the award. Or Left 4 Dead 1, I think that was a 2009 release, no?

What makes an RPG, imho, is the fact that you are able to roleplay a character through having choices that affect the story and the world around you. It's possible to do so with combat-heavy stuff, i suppose, but it comes through most easily in a story-heavy game.

It's certainly possible to have a game with shooter-like action and roleplay. Deus Ex or Mass Effect are perfect examples. I just don't think Borderlands is that kind of game, from what I've read about it.

@Arcite: hey, I am French and I don't mind difficulty Posted Image
The one thing I mind is that I get no decent RPG for months and then 3 come out at the same time. I guess I'll wait to play Divinity 2 and to finish Risen after I finish DA:O, but they could still time things better.

Is this even a question? I think the only thing we need to be talking about is how to owerthrow Modern Warfare 2 in oreder to get DAo the GoTY.

From what I've read I got the impression that Borderlands is not really an RPG ... not in the same league as DAO.

Maybe Divinity2 then, however it's not as big as DA by far. It just does things right within it's small scale world.

And finally a Drakan style game again - been a while yay.

DA:O = RPG of the decade according to PC Gamer UK review

Not that flamechump will take any notice of a European review of course. But I do.

As far as PC game of year goes, I think DAO has a good shot. I'm sure something fpsy with 4 hours of gameplay (Like the new modern warfare 2) will actually win it, but DAO will still be my game of the year :P

Cel shaded animation won't hurt Boderlands at all, it might actually help it, however as far as RPG's go Borderlands doesn't stand much of a chance against Dragon Age as people have pointed it out, story isn't it's foremost 'thing'.

Borderlands looks like little more than an item collection arcade? Was there RPG to it?
