No romance - is it new policy or one-game decision?

I'm still hoping for an Anders romance for my mage PC that gets dumped by Alistair. Not in Awakening, but possibly in a later game.

And if it doesn't happen, it's okay too. As long as the game is good, and I can write my own little stories off of it in my head. I'm still happy.

I am more than a bit irritated that Mhairi's video shows Anders hitting on her. But that's the jealous "if the npcs can flirt with each other, why can't I flirt with them?" part of me. That and the Anders/fem mage PC thing that I mentioned above.

No Romance?

No game.

I for one will not be buying. The romance part was what set DA apart from so many others. I have other games to buy/play and little time. Time to move on.

No Romance? Boo! I liked the interplay of the character's and the romances were part of that. If this is a trend, it may change my purchasing habits for Bio-Ware products. Character interplay is what makes this game superior, without it the game is a fancy first person shooter.

These pretty much sum it up for me. If the budget was the concern, cut some violence and bring on the relat's. The relationships, gave the game a cinematic feel, now it'll be just another fps. But I'm just one player, maybe all the WOW trolls will buy it now there is no romance. KILL KILL KILL is all they want lol

Or maybe the DA mod creators can add romance back in?

no romance is punishment for my indescretions... I force an innocent noble Alistar into a three way with a dirty pirate wh0re... I took away his innocense and now EA took away my joy

I did that too, hehe, good times, good times...

I hardened Alistair with one of my characters because he's much more tolerable when he's not such a goody two shoes.  He is definitely a fun man to corrupt

I don't think I'm losing the romance option in Awakening as much as I'm losing the right to torment my pixeled lover.

I think I'll still play but theres one thing about the lack of romances that is going to bug me.. my charrie basically lives happily ever after with Alistair so to speak lol, so if he cameo's in awakenings does that mean theres no actual interaction or reference to that fact?

The romance decision will always be made on a per-game basis. There's no blanket policy at BioWare that must always be or never be romance in a game. That will be decided on what fits best in each game.

What? Bioware has a "no blanket" policy? You monsters -- how will the children sleep?

I suppose Bioware wants the streets to be filled with shivering orphans!

BLANKETS FOR ALL.

BLANKETS FOR ALL.

BLANKETS FOR ALL.

Can I hire you to write political speeches against my enemies?

I am still waiting for npc romances. Morrigan still doesn't turn into a nug and have romance abilities with Ohgren

Overreacting indeed. The romances were what... about 5% of the original game? And its not like you cant even talk to the characters. I dont get why a character isn't assumed deep unless you can romance them.

Write some tacky fanfic if the romances mean that much to you.

I have to disagree the romance was not 5% of the game, it gave the character dept. He or she could get to know people, form likes and dislikes and even fall in love.
I am a writer at trade and I don’t want to make up own stories when I play an RPG. I certainly do not want to write any cheese fan fiction to enrich a game I paid for. That’s the whole point of playing for me that I cannot just take control of the story and bend it to my will, if I need to do that I can just as well just keep working on my book. Back to my original point I have played rpg games for ever, longer than I would wish to admit and the fights is not what makes them the most interesting, to learn new skills are fun and sometimes you just wait around for the points to learn that special ability but it is the people you encounter the characters you do not control that makes it really interesting.

He meant content-wise the romance takes up 5% or less of the game. As in, you are spending less than 5% of the game interacting with them. And that 5% figure is super high too, as I'd say romancing a character really only adds maybe... 25% more content to any of the characters in DA:O than not romancing them would get you.

And again, just because you aren't being romantically involved with characters in game does not mean those characters will have less depth or be less interesting or engaging.

The important thing is how well written the characters are.

Imagine you could not romance Alistair/Morrigan/Leliana/Zevran in the original game.

If you found their personalities interesting. Wouldn't you still have enjoyed the game and being in their company? (Despite no possibility of romance)

If you're wondering why there are no romances in Awakening, here's the reason:

http://pc.ign.com/ar.../1072747p1.html

Honestly, sounds like they packed a lot of content and that the expansion is going to be about politics as much as it is combat. Sounds very interesting. Yeah I'm disappointed that there won't be any romances in Awakening, but it sounds like with everything else they wanted to do in the expansion they just didn't have ability within a budget to include that. That all being said, I'm kinda glad there are no romance carry-overs from DA:O cuz.....

Morrigan's having my baby, but I ain't payin no child support!

As I posted in another thread, it doesn't bother me that much that there is no romance-plot in DA:A ... as long as Morrigan returns in Dragon Age 2! :D

well i sure hope alistair returns in dao2 as my warden married him so if he's not then i wanna know why all of a sudden my warden is single and my decions from dao are undone hmmmmmm would kind of kill the game for me as i really felt all the emotions of my character when i played my runthroughs

I doubt they'd return in the sequel either, as the sequels probably not going to involve the GW.

They are only a huge part when there is a blight or other darkspawn-related incident. Otherwise, they are about as huge a part of the DAO franchise as Switzerland on European politics for the last 500 years.

The grey wardens fight blights. They're not Spectres, who fight anything evil. They only fight blights. And considering Devs have shown distaste in making a game about another Blight, its not likely the GW will be coming back in a major role.

Of course, if they do make a game about another blight, it'll be around 400 years in the future from DA:O, as Blights have a few centuries between them.

Gray Warden or not, it's pretty likely Morrigan will return in a sequel. She's extremely popular, had a special ending screen, and it has been hinted that we haven't seen the last of her.

she was a fun character but so was alistair zevran and shale i thought most of our companions were well written and perfectly voiced i just hope they stick around for at least 2 expansions and that we get to pick up where we left of with the companions we romanced in a future release as that was an emotional part of the game and got me into loving dao so much that i neglected all 200 of my other games :{
