Strangely, I too have never had much issue with money. I did have a couple of circumstances when I didn't have enough money to buy something, but my money never went below 10000+, and I always found enough money from missions to buy everything. Hell, I wasn't even able to do all the sidequests from the various planets. And that was on my first playthrough when I was buying everything including the fish.

Hearing about people "saving" on fuel and probes... I dunno, I top off when my tank goes 50%, and I buy probes even when not empty (it's not like you get a bulk discount for them), and still have enough money left over to buy everything. It just takes a bit more time and patience to earn enough money to get everything, but it is possible.

I actually like that money actually does matter in ME2. When I played ME1, I was advised by my friends who were veterans in that game to never spend money on equipment, because you can always get the gear you want out in the field. I remember initially disregarded that advise at first on my very first game, and bought a Tsunami IV from a shop... only to find myself picking up three copies of the same weapon on Noveria from crates. Since then I've relied purely on crate drops for weapons and equipment, and hit 999999999 in no time. And with nothing to spend money on, it just seemed such a waste.

It's actually not possible to buy everything unless you do every single sidequest and open every single hack/bypass for credits and do every renegade "what's it worth to ya" option in the game.  Even then on the first playthrough you will likely be about 175k short.  Depends on how efficiently you scan planets I guess but even that isn't much more than 50k swing either way.

So I see your perspective and raise you with my own.

I bought equipment in the first mass effect all the time because it kept my credits from maxing out, which in turn kept me from having to turn stuff into omni-gel. Because once you got to about level 45, the loot just became a hassle. Playing on NG+ was a nightmare, with all the inventory management. It bothered me at first in ME2 not not get anything, just because I was used to loot, but I've come to really love the new system as opposed to the old.

I'm curious why was it a nightmare?  I mean technically the system was designed so you had some spare gear room but generally speaking once you got something better you could just omnigel the old stuff and move on?

Was there some benefit to being an uber packrat and carrying around useless junk?

I've heard some people mention running low on credits but I never had this problem. I wasn't able to buy absolutely everything out there but I was able to get the necessary stuff I needed. I did every mission (including Liara's) and side quest though so that may have helped out a little. I was also able to hack/bypass most of the secured safes/datapads I came across during the game. By the time I finished I had about 315k credits leftover.

I just buy the upgrades that affect my character, and have plenty of money left over.

I wasn't a packrat and I didn't carry anything around .  The problem for me was keeping it that way, having to constantly sell or omnigel junk (upgrades in particular) so I didn't get the "you're at 145 of 150 items" spam every half hour.   That was what was a nightmare for me.  I found it incredibly annoying, especially when I was playing new game plus.  It was basically the only complaint I had about the original game.

Like I said in the post a bit before that one, when I started ME2, I initially thought the new system was too extreme in the other direction, and I missed getting loot for much of my first playthrough, but the more I've played, the more I've come to embrace and enjoy the new system.  I'm not finding that I miss loot at all now.

Although obviously it does help greatly coming into the game with the Long Service bonus and the wealthy character bonus from ME1...

Invalidate?  That would mean if I won I would win nothing....  No no no I "raise you"  meaning lets get more of yours or a check or a nod or something.  Image IPB

I just don't get it.  I don't remember ever filling my inventory at all.  Seems like there's a peace of the puzzle missing somewhere.

I have just checked my most recent playthrough.

I have 130k credits left.

I have every single upgrade in the game aside;

The two hack duration upgrades.

I missed one health upgrade, but it was one to find, as every shop in every single planet has 'no items'

I bought all armor, fish, magazines, and misc. silly stuff as well.

Note, this was a level 60 ME1 import so I started with 350k, but still there should be a benefit like that for importing a lvl 60.

I find it strange you guys are having that much of an issue.

Don't know what to tell you.  That's how I remember the game, and it's pretty fresh;  I last played it through about a month ago, leading into the new one.  It was particularly bad on any mission with Geth, and the Colossus were the worst.  On new game plus, I usually had the max credits and max omnigel, as well as all the gear I wanted, pretty early in the game, so everything from that point on was just useless junk.  Not having that in the game, for me, is not any loss at all.  I actually like that you have to level your upgrades in NG+ in ME2 because it gives a sense of progression to the NG+ game that didn't exist in the original, although it can make Insanity a little more Insane for a while.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but if you're playing the Xbox360 version, there is a bug to double hack a money safe. It's a bit hard to pull off and doesn't work 80% of the time as you have to button tap really quickly after you complete your first hack of a safe and most times you end up locking yourself out on your second hack attempt of a safe.

Not buying hack and bypass upgrades is a key, I think.  I didn't buy those, either.  And haven't missed them at all.   I think I've gotten better at hacking than I was on my first run.

Getting tired of repeating myself, people should read the thread.  It has already been PROVEN that in a 1st playthrough, even if you import a level 60 character from ME1 with the bling achievement, even if you do all missions, open all containers, save up on fuel and probes etc etc that you cannot buy and upgrade everything.  There are not enough missions in the game to produce enough money to do that.  Period.

This made me laugh.
Personally I always had a problem with money. WIth a Lvl60 character and hacking/collecting practically everything, I always came up short on some of the crazy-expensive upgrades. Not that I had a problem beating the game, but I'm kinda OCD for all of the upgrades.
They really should've put in a mineral trade system. 500K of Iridium and Palladium just doesn't seem useful without selling it .

True.
I got close. Still have a few pending 50K discounted items on Illium, and I only came out with 25K after everything.
I'm scared to even try to mine the gas planets cuz I KNOW I'lll run out of creds for fuel and probes.

I'm actually quite pleased with the "economy," if you want to call it that, in ME2. It forces the player to actually have to choose between different upgrades, rather than mindlessly buying everything that looks even moderately useful. Did you really enjoy always running around with 9,999,999 credits and 999 omni-gel in Mass Effect 1?

I did, but apparently I'm in the minority ;)

Edited to add something a little more discourse-worthy. Inventory management and money get in the way of a good story. The protagonist in a story should only ever run out of money for the things he or she needs when the plot demands that he or she does so.

I have tons of platinum on my ship. Why the hell i cannot sell them? There are no jewelery in the future? Becouse platinum is normally pretty expensive...

I have the opposite problem. I have almost no platinum and massive amounts of Element Zero and Iridium. For every large spike of Platinum on a planet, there are at least two for either Iridium or Palladium. And that sucks.

As to the money thing, I brought this up a while ago. But if you do all of the recruit and loyalty quests, and import an ME1 character w/ the Long service medal, you will have enough money. That is the only way. Other than that, forget it. The lack of items sucks, and the fact there is nothing to sell also sucks. And on Insanity, you need all the upgrades you can get.

ok. but they kinda went from one extreme (bad idea) to the other (also bad idea).

i would have enjoyed buying crap for Sheps cabin, but decided that was a bad idea becasue of the whole money issue and said "to hell with it". whatever, not a MAJOR issue, but pretty damn wonky nonetheless.
